Erotic Romance Author Magnolia Rivers

MAGNOLIA RIVERS
Hi, I’m Magnolia “Maggie” Rivers.  I was born and raised in Northport, Alabama, was an Air Force nurse in the Viet Nam war and now live in Des Moines, Iowa.

I’ve always wanted to be a writer.  I sold my first article, at the ripe old age of 21, to a parents’ magazine.  I had just become a new mom myself and didn’t know a thing about parenting.  I was hooked when I saw my name in print inside that magazine.  The feeling was euphoric.  To me, there’s nothing like it.

The thing you really want to know about me is I’m an erotic romance author.  I find writing erotic romance easy at times.  Seems the words just flow from my brain, out my fingertips and onto my keyboard.  Other times, it’s like my arms have been cut off.  There’s stuff in my brain but it just can’t find its way down to the keyboard that’s sitting there staring up at me.

I find it rather comical when I go to different events and people ask me what it is I do for a living.  I’m not one to camouflage what I do, so I tell them straight out, I write erotic romance novels.  Then I’m asked the inevitable question by a male in the group.  “Do you need someone to do research with …”  My reply for that has become, “Well, actually I do need a dead body for one of my mysteries, are you interested in becoming one?”

I’m one of the writers in the team known as “Writers of the Lake”.  With C. Deanne Rowe, we’ve become known to our fans as “The Stiletto Girls” and we write short fun reads all including a pair of stilettos in some way.

Our stories are rated on degree of hotness by chili peppers.  One for mild, two is moderate and three is “Whoa, mama!”  I’m usually “Whoa, mama!”  LOL!  Each story is complete on its own, so you can read one in a short time.  They’re fun and I think that’s the big reason our fans love them.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my “Help An Old Lady Buy A Shoe” campaign.  It’s actually “The Stilettomobile.”  It fits perfectly with our stiletto books so do visit campaign headquarters and read all about it.

Over the years, I’ve found my best writing time begins at two o’clock in the morning whether I like it or not.  The house is quiet and the people in my head are wide awake.  I’m a “pantser”.  I simply sit down at my keyboard and write whatever pops into my head and eventually the words “The End” come out.

I love writing the sex scenes.  No, I haven’t done everything in those scenes but once people find out that’s what you write they start telling you about some of their escapades.  Everything I hear is fair game and could wind up in my books.

So, enough about me and my writing.  Go “Help An Old Lady Buy A Shoe!”  LOL!

What a great picture for your "Help an Old Lady" promotion! I'm originally from Iowa. Hope you're enjoying it. If you haven't visited Lake Okoboji/Spirit Lake yet make sure you do. I set my latest mystery (with a side of romance)there because I had so many fond memories!

Thanks for stopping by, Maggie! Blogger swallowed my first comment, so I'll try again. :)

I think you ladies are onto something with the short, fun reads - three-to-a-book idea. Modern readers often seem to prefer what I call TV-style reading: a complete story in an hour. Even magazine articles are often 1-pagers. It's a trend.

Good luck with your fundraiser for the AWESOME Stilletto Mobile!

Sarah, I think blogger is swallowing my comments, too! LOL! Let's see if this one makes it.

Linda, thanks for your comment and I haven't been to Lake Okoboji yet but it's on my list of places to visit.

Sarah, I agree, the short, fun reads are great for summertime and the beach!

Hey Glenna! Good to see you're learning this internet thing. LOL!

Hi Maggie,

I liked your comment about feeling like your arms have been cut off. Some days I feel like my head has been lost somewhere. I sit at that computer and absolutely nothing comes out. But I've done what you suggested in one of your classes, which was to write about anything I can think of, even if it's not part of the story. Usually, that's enough to trigger my brain that it's actually supposed to function when I sit down at the computer. Thanks for that great tip, and best of luck on the "Stilettomobile."

Hi Maggie, I'm a little late chiming in because I worked this weekend.

I really like how you've branded your stories with a great visual that translates well into cool covers!

My characters like the house quiet before they come out and play and there are times when they refuse to sleep and I'm up with them in the middle of the night. Thankfully that isn't all the time, lol. Do you think that's a pantser thing?

Do you use the advice you gave in the class Mika references when the connection between your brain and fingers is lost?

Sometimes I do - when the story line is there but how I want to express it is funky.

There are those times when the story line just isn't coming together so I distract myself and I go for a walk, put in a load of laundry, or play a mindless game of computer solitaire. I can feel my brain working, percolating and in time (sometimes longer than shorter) it sorts itself out and then I have an extremely productive session at the computer.

Hi Mika, thanks for the comment. Glad the tip I gave during class helps. Those extra typing things may wind up as the beginnings of another story for you. Let the words flow however they choose.

Hi Judith, glad you made it even if you did have to work. Yes I use the tip I gave in class also. My characters like to talk to me at two in the morning! They can be pretty obnoxious then. It's during the day that I have trouble getting them to talk. That's when the link gets broken. Then I write other things until it works again.
