Some Good Reads!

While I hate to admit this, writers on tight deadlines, often don’t make the time to read. And when we do read, we tend to read within our genre.  Of course we justify these reading choices as needing to keep up with the competition and keeping abreast of what’s selling.

There are so many talented authors out there and so much to choose from, that sometimes it can be difficult to narrow down these choices. Time is limited, and reading means taking away from writing for those of us on on a tight deadline. 

Right before bed is what I’ve carved out as my reading time. On my nightstand next to my Kindle are a number of books, some I read simultaneously.

Currently I am reading a book by Susan Fox titled, Love me Tender. It has an interesting plot line and the conflict is an original one.   

Bettye Griffith’s latest release is on my Kindle as well. Bettye; a wonderful friend, and talented author, has been a long time favorite author of mine. I love her direct writing style and her unique humor.   All this to say so much to choose from and such limited time.

For all writers there are a few must haves that should be on your shelves.  One is definitely Debra Dixon’s Goal, Motivation and Conflict.  This book has helped me immensely every time I’ve struggled with a plot.   

Another to add to your reading list is The Flip Dictionary by Barbara Ann Kipfer. This resource is perfect when words fail you or you’ve over used a word.  Kipfer’s book goes way beyond a reverse dictionary reference. It offers cues and clue words to help you choose the exact phrase or specific term that evades you.

Another recommendation for character building is The Secret Language of Birthdays by Gary Goldschneider and Joost Elffers.  These 832 pages combine astrology, numerology, and psychic intuition. They give you a detailed description of the characteristics associated with people born on a particular day.  There are over 366 personality types within and you get insight into the strengths, weaknesses, and major issues of people born on that day. It’s a fascinating read and can help you establish conflict between hero and heroine. 

Last,  I leave you with my own reissue, Eden’s Dream, coming soon. This book was written almost fifteen years ago before terrorism was a reality. It will be available for purchase on the various e platforms in a week or two.
