We all have life-changing events. I considered several for this post, including moving to Alaska, having my daughter, the beginnings of my teaching and writing careers. But since this is a romance blog, I decided to go with the obvious: marrying my husband.
I met my DH when we were both in a college production of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. He was an actor and I was a make up artist. Since I specialized in old men’s wrinkles and beards, I ended up spending a lot of time in the men’s dressing room. (I swear I averted my eyes when they took their tights off!) Cute meet, I know. ;-)
We had a whirlwind romance for a couple months, from our first date the week after the cast party to his gift of an engagement ring at Christmas. I was sure he was The One, but my parents weren’t. My dad suggested we wait to get married until one of us had a college degree in hand, and he was greatly relieved when we saw the sense in his argument. We were married a year and a half later.
That was thirty-two years ago, and I’ve never regretted it. My DH has been my sweetheart and conversation partner, my traveling companion and my best friend. We have lots of shared interests, but also give each other space to pursue our own interests—and he’s my greatest cheerleader when I need one. Having a partner in life means I’m never alone in the world. We’ve shared the ups and downs of life, the heartaches and laughter. He’s my rock, and I think I’m his, as well. Marriage has enriched my life, and I am so grateful for my DH. I can’t imagine living without him, but I’m sure my life would have been very different if we hadn’t joined forces.
Lynn Lovegreen grew up in Alaska, and still lives there. Her young adult/new adult historical romances are set in the Alaska Gold Rush, a great time for drama, romance, and independent characters. See her website at www.lynnlovegreen.com.
Certainly marrying your college sweetheart qualifies for "Best Life Changing Event" Having worked in domestic and international adoption for just shy of thirty years, I believe marrying a best friend makes for a strong marriage.
ReplyDeleteMy DH and I were married just out of high school. It was wartime and he was #8 in the Draft Lottery.
ReplyDeleteBest decision ever! Life hasn't always been easy, but we have learned and grown in so many ways that have made us better people. and as you said, we are never alone with our best friend at our side.
Great post!
Thanks, Judith and Sarah. Glad to hear we're not the only ones who found best friends and spouses in the same people. :-)
