Starting A New ... in June

Hi, I’m Judith Ashley, author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, soul nourishing romantic women’s fiction with light paranormal elements. My stories show you what life could be like if you had a place like The Circle where you are unconditionally accepted, supported and loved. And where, with this support, you make choices to overcome the darkest nights of your life to choose love and light.

With the title “Starting A New … in June” running rings around in my head for the past several weeks, I’ve lots of ideas!

What am I starting a new?

Number One on my list is better health. After several challenging years my blood iron levels are up and I have enough energy to actually accomplish things. Not everything is “fixed” and at my age I no longer expect to be 100% what I was in my fifties much less my twenties. However, I do want, for a start, to have more stamina and endurance. I know that as I’m able to do more I’ll be stronger, build muscle and lose fat.

Number Two on my list is to expand my horizons. I’m not talking about going anywhere special. I’m just coming off of 4.5 months of not driving at all and at least 3 of those months, I didn’t go anywhere except the doctor’s office. Being able to drive across town and meet up with my brother and sister-in-law for lunch at our favorite Thai restaurant, stop by the Cedar Mill Powell’s Books and Jan’s Paperbacks would be a treat. I do have a goal of being able to meet friends at Country Cousins’ restaurant in Centralia, Washington (90 minutes from me) and visit my youngest granddaughter, her husband and my great grands in Anacortes, Washington (5 hours from me) before the winter rains and snow come.

Number Three is to finish up some projects, one in particular is decades old, so I can cross that one off my list. Now that I have more energy, I hope to get at least 50% of it done this summer.

That brings me to another project that I’ve not worked on in 4 – 5 years. My writing. I’ve a non-fiction book “Staying Sane in a Crazy World” that I want to create in audio book form. A second non-fiction “Yes, You Can Create the Life You Love” to finish in print, e-book and audio. Then I’ve several short stories or prequels to my Sacred Women’s Circle series that I’ve wanted to spiff up and publish.

What I know is true for me, I do better when I have goals with plans and a flexible time frame. And at this stage in my life, that flexible time frame is critical to my success.

You might wonder “why?”

The answer is simple: while I’m doing better than I was even a year ago much less five months ago, I’m not back to where I was five years ago. The reality is I may never be able to create, to work, to even physically move at that level. So, on good days when everything is easier, more gets done. On the not-as-good days, less gets done. And with a flexible time frame, it doesn’t matter. Time will pass and it will get done --- or not.

You can find my books at your favorite e-book vendor as well as through my website www.JudithAshley.net and Windtree Press. Print books are available at Jan’s Paperbacks in Beaverton, OR and Arte Soleil in Portland, OR. Get the addresses from my website. 1. Sounds like you ARE doing better, Judith! Hooray for your up coming plans and smart to be flexible.

I really enjoyed your book Staying Sane in a Crazy World. Which is what we all are living in right now.

    Good luck on your projects!!!

  2. Thanks for stopping by, Diana. It's been a very long road to get where I am now. I'm Staying Saner by seeing how far I've come rather than looking at where I want to be. It is difficult at times and I remind myself that I'm a "recovering high achiever" and taking one day at a time is my best way forward.

  3. Judith - you are always so active, even when you don't think you are. You pick up the phone and ask for help - and that is a great activity when one doesn't quite have the energy. Making lists and thinking about projects is half the battle. You go, Judith. Each "step" whether physical, or writing or, with help, adjusting your living space and garden, is a step forward. Here's to starting a-new in June!

  4. Thanks, Barb. Being able to drive, even the 5 blocks to the store and pharmacy has been such a mental health boon! And I actually can do more than that now. Pacing myself is still not easy for me and I'm much better at that than I have been in my life.

  5. Deb, I think at times I compare what I'm doing now to what I was doing a decade ago...and in comparison, I'm not doing much. However, one of my goals is to be more realistic and see how much better I'm doing now in comparison to even a few months ago. Celebrating "Starting A New ... in June" is a positive message to myself. And yes, counting the steps in the journey is more helpful than looking at the journey as a whole. Thanks for stopping by and supporting the "pick up the phone and ask for help" life lesson.

  6. Judith, I'm happy to hear you are getting your strength and energy back. That is something that is necessary to feel accomplished at anything. Even just cooking a meal or going for a walk. You are a very positive person.

  7. Paty, it has been a challenging few years and I'm grateful to be able to do more. Now what I need to learn or at least be better at practicing is "pacing". I don't "bounce back" like I once remember doing so I've become more tortoise-like---slow and steady wins the race, the race is being able to do more for myself. I'm especially grateful I'm doing well enough to drive!
