Robin Weaver - Genre Schitzofrenic

Hi Everyone!

I’m Robin Weaver and delighted to be a part of this blog group. I’m one of the East Coast representatives—southern style. I moved to North Carolina fifteen years ago from the Boston area and although I miss summertime New England, I’ve permanently traded in my ski boots for flip flops.

I’m the program’s chair of the Carolina Romance Writers and currently coordinate the Category (Series) division of the Kiss of Death Daphne du Maurier contest. In my day job, I’m a computer geek and, alas, am still searching for that elusive publishing contract. So if you see mine floating around, please send it my way.

So what’s my genre? While I admit to skepticism when it comes to astrology, perhaps being a Gemini explains why I can’t settle on just one. I approach writing like a box of candy, sinking my teeth into several categories and enjoying every delicious word nougat and buttercream. My first love is mystery/suspense, but I dabble in YA, light paranormal, contemporary and humor. My only criterion is an HEA. Writing, like reading, is a little escape from reality. Why on earth would I want a somber ending?

Some people ask me how (or why) I write in so many genres. My reply: “How can I not?” To me, genre is not as important as the tale. As you know, a good story needs great "nutty" characters with important things to do and lots of gooey caramel conflict to keep things interesting. So I ask, does it really matter whether the chocolate is white, dark or milk?

Your thoughts?

Robin,I've given in to temptation and hopped genres, too! So many flavors, so little time. *SIGH*

Where it matters is, I think, in selling our work. I'd like to settle into paranormal romance for a while to build an audience.

But that Steampunk sure looks good...

Having had the pleasure to critique some of Robin's manuscripts I have to say she does all variety of chocolate well--and the caramel gets mighty sticky.

Hmmm, I love dark chocolate but not dark romance...perhaps a smidgeon (like a few pages) but since I read to relax, being on the edge of my chair just doesn't keep me interested in the book.

Chocolate? I may prefer dark but I seldom turn down white or milk - I can turn my back on caramel but not peanut butter and dark chocolate or dark chocolate and mint or any flavor of chocolate and nuts (just not cashews or pistachios) - never realized I was so picky...great question, Robin.

I love all genres. I enjoy when many of the authors I read have tried a new genre. I am not a writer, but I would think if you can write in one genre you should be able to switch without much thought. I agree the tale is there, make it into any genre you want.

I moved to AZ 8 years ago from the east coast. I grew up in Boston lived there for over 30 years.

I love chocolate in all it's shapes and flavors. I( never have to change the endings.

Unfair! The comments alone are making me hungry, and I've already had my Starbuck's for the day ...

I think in different genres too. Sigh. Should we call ourselves polygenrephilic?

Love that word...polygenrephilic...

Isn't it interesting how many of us on RTG are admitting our craziness. Thank goodness we're writers and get a 'pass' or 'do not go to the psych ward'.

I totally agree. Story is far more important than genre! And I love a genre "mix."

I'm right there with you about HEA's, Robin, along with the chocolate and caramel, and the nougat and buttercream-goodness of writing...aww, great, now I'm hungry. Oh, and one thing we do have in common is the schizophrenia. It's great we have this blog to help us, isn't it? Well, hopefully we'll be able to use our conditions to help other writers...
