SEAL Wolves in Action!

A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing was my ninth book in the series, but my third book was To Tempt the Wolf, and it's really the beginning of my mention of the SEAL wolves. Hunter Greymere was their team leader, and then I finally was able to get back to them in A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing. I continued with writing about the team in: A SEAL Wolf Christmas, SEAL Wolf Hunting, SEAL Wolf in too Deep, SEAL Wolf Undercover.

I'm retired Army Reserves, my dad retired Air Force, my mom and sister and brother-in-law in the Army, all but my mother retiring, my son in the Air Force, both ex-husbands military, one Army, one Air Force, so for me, creating military heroes is fun, and a natural course of action. 

I think of leadership, fighting ability, protecting, first-aid knowledge, the training for rescues and more, when I think of a military hero. In my cougar shifter series, the heroes are former Army, and now, most are part of the police force in Yuma Town.

I met a girl yesterday at the grocery store who was bench pressing 250 lbs, getting in shape for signing up to be a Navy SEAL. But her mom went into a crying fit and so she didn't do it. But I was impressed that she had been working so hard to get in shape to try out to be a Navy SEAL. Only a few men make it through the program. For women, it's even harder.

When I think of creating a hero—it's easier to make a character more believable, who's able to handle whatever I throw at them, if they have a former military background. Think of it. If I said Joe Smith was this sexy librarian who fought Ninja-type assassins, it would be a stretch, wouldn't it? Somehow, it's just hard to see how someone who is untrained to handle such a thing could.

Still, I don't do it just because it's "easy." I do it because I love the military and military types. That makes it easy.

In A SEAL Wolf Christmas, my heroine was former Army. She's just as capable as the men to take down the bad guys. My editor thought she should be a librarian or something, because she thought she was too tough. No way! A librarian in the Amazon jungle trying to help save hostages from terrorists?

She wasn't there as a hostage! She was there as one of the team! 

Certainly, I don't mean to put librarians down. I worked at one for five years and loved it. But I was retired Army, and I can't imagine any of my co-workers getting down and dirty, with the kind of training she would need to handle the mission, unless she had a lot of training for some other reason.

In my first jaguar book, Savage Hunger, the heroine is Army also. And so is the heroine in SEAL Wolf Undercover. Even in some of my other books: a vampire romantic suspense—Killing the Bloodlust, where she is a huntress hunting rogue vampires, she's also an Army officer on active duty, and the hero is too; and In the Dead of the Night, the men are FBI agents, but former Army, so is the heroine; Bound for Danger, again, FBI agents are former Army, and she's an Army officer on active duty. I based it at Fort Hood, Texas, where I was stationed for one of my tours of duty when I was on active duty.

But I like to give them an edge—so with the shifters, they have their enhanced senses: sight, smell, hearing, strength. Though they are often up against their own kind with the same abilities. With the vampire book, increased strength, and in the Bound by Danger, she's psychic, and has premonitions of future happenings.

Vaughn observed the brunette laughing at something the redhead said at their table. She turned her head in Vaughn’s direction, as if she realized someone was watching her. He hadn’t meant to be staring at her, but everything about her appealed, and he just couldn’t take his eyes off her.

He smiled. She smiled. In that instant, he felt they’d made a connection. As lame as that was. When she left the club tonight, she was going home with the muscular guy who had his arm wrapped around her like he was afraid he’d lose her. From what Vaughn could tell, she hadn’t once shown any interest in anyone else but her date. Oh sure, when she was seated at her table and sipping from a drink, she was watching other dancers, but she wasn’t focusing on any one person. Not like he was focusing on her.

Her gaze caught his again, and he couldn’t help but smile. Not that her checking him out meant anything. But he sure could fantasize.

Formerly an army intelligence officer and now a PI, Jillian Matthews had agreed to go out with her brother Miles’s friend as a favor, but man did the guy have octopus arms. Oh sure, he was fun, but way more interested than she was. The guy several tables over, now he got her attention. If she didn’t know any better, she’d say he was all wolf, though some human males showed the same wolfish interest in a woman, even if she was with someone else. She’d never think about dumping a guy on a date when he was being nice, especially when it was to pay her brother back for his help in solving one of her cases. But she’d made sure she said it was only one date, unless she changed her mind.

Everything about the club was a blast—the music, drinks, dancers, and atmosphere—yet the man at the other table truly stole her attention tonight.

“Did you want to return here tomorrow night?” Miles asked.

She smiled at her brother. She’d love to if the other guy was going to be here. He had dark hair, chiseled features, tanned biceps. He was muscular but not overdone, and had a darkly, intriguing smile that made her melt.

Then she learns he's a SEAL wolf, no wonder she was intrigued! She ends up shooting the wolf, for a very good reason though! It helps to have that military training!
