Can you believe that 2019 is almost done? How the heck did that happen???
As the year draws to an end I know may people spend time reflecting on the past 11 months or setting goals for the next 11 months. Me???? I bake.
As I shared last month I love Thanksgiving, it makes the perfect bridge into the baking season. Because if I'm honest everything I do for the following month and half requires food of sometime....
Looking at lights???? I've got a cookie and drink for that :-) (Amaretto cookies and hot chocolate or for the kiddie crowd - chocolate covered cherry cookies and hot chocolate)
This is a local display... so much fun |
Making a snowman??? I have the prefect pancake breakfast (heart shaped pumpkin spice)
Or
Maybe you are decorating the house and tree - a big bowl of puppy chow is a must!
Did you go to a candy cane hunt and end up with 249 candy canes??? Well, I have a cookie to use them in.
I share most of these in the free recipe book I made that goes with my sweet Christmas romance - The Christmas Reunion - Recipes
If you decide you want to read a sweet Christmas Romance that has a bear, North American cougars, marmosets, and serval cats with a 6 year-old and snowman building contest here's the link - The Christmas Reunion
While some of these are tried and true recipes, I'm always up for new ones. Actually, it is my goal to try five to seven new recipes a holiday season. This isn't welcomed with open arms by my family. They want the tried and true. But as with my most things, I'm about the adventure. Now while about 90% of what I make is a welcomed replacement...there are those not so successful.
Like the asparagus blueberry shortcakes- we love asparagus, we love blueberries, we love shortcakes. But we don't love them mixed together. But as with life you never know unless you try. For example, my hubby is certain bacon doughnuts would be awful, while I don't think there is such a thing as an awful doughnut... okay maybe asparagus blueberry... he tried them and like Sam I am, he loved them!
I'm looking forward to cooking many new things in 2020. I'm going to start Keto in January. I've sort of dabbled but I've committed all of January to Keto. I have the menu made - I used Keto Made Easy for my recipe ideas. One's I'm forward to trying are the Cauliflower baked Ziti and loaded cheese nachos.
I'm also cooking up some new recipes for my current WIP - What's In the Pie...
I also have novellas coming out for a new series - Adrenaline Rush - these will be the guys I'm cooking this series with. Yeah, sometimes life is hard ;-)
So what is in your oven??? I love to try new things :-) Have a great holiday...see you next month

Oh Lyncee, I admire you so much. What's in my oven? Nothing except the pan I dry roast almonds and pecans on - and no, I don't use them in baking, stirring, frying, boiling or steaming anything. Just grab a handful when I'm wanting something to nibble on. However, 50 years ago I loved to make pecan sticky buns and cinnamon rolls as well as bake my own bread. That was what I did on Saturday mornings. Fond memories but that's all they are. I severely limit all sugar and except for occasional rice flour wrap on a Thai Salad Roll or corn chips in Nachos I don't do flour. Bought some zucchini pasta and never used it so donated it to a food drive...why didn't I use it? Because I would have had to cook it. When I bought it, I was thinking "Oh, I could cook up this and it would last a few days." And, if I had cooked it up, it would have lasted a few days. Keto and Paleo both require major food preparation and I just can't quite get myself into that. Thankfully I can eat dairy so cottage cheese and tomato or peaches or plain works as does a few slices of deli meat rolled into "appetizer" shapes. Maybe I'll fall in love with my kitchen and cooking in 2020?
Lyncee, I used to bake a lot when I had little ones at home, too. Not so much anymore. But your recipes are inspiring me to get back into cooking! I'm loading up my iPhone with ebooks to read over the holidays, so Chirstmas Reunion is just what I was looking for!
I think there would be insurrection in my house if certain food items didn't appear over the holidays - humans are such creatures of habit. Plus, food can evoke powerful emotions which is why this time of year finds me baking a few dozen sugar cookies using my MIL recipe - a memory of hubby's mom and her tasty cookies. I'll also bake a few dozen shortbread cookies using my mum's recipe passed down to her from her mum. Christmas wouldn't feel right without those cookies. But I do add something new to the dessert table every year to go along with the tried and true.
Lyncee,
Great post. Hubby and I jumped in Keto in May (2019) after seeing great results from a few friends and doing quite a bit of research/reading and a strong endorsement from our doctor. We are LOVING Keto and the results have been nothing short of amazing. Turns out our bodies had pretty much stopped processing carbs and were just storing for a rainy day. We live in the desert. It never rains!! Wishing you much luck with this life style change. It does require some kitchen time but in many ways it has reinvigorated our cooking. Some of our favorites are (beanless) chili, mozzarella and egg crust Pizza and crustless broccoli quiche which I'm sure you could add some asparagus to. I also like full fat cottage cheese with a handful of blueberries (I buy fresh and then put in a zip lock freezer bag so they're always handy if I get a sweet tooth). It's not ice cream, but it's cold and sweet. Best wishes for a healthy and happy new year.
Robin
What a great idea to include a cookbook along with a book that features cooking. I agree with others that in my household their are cooking traditions for each holiday, and woe be the cook who would change that. You can add new thing but not take away anything old. :)
Merry Christmas!
