February is Here! by Paty Jager

Wow! Can you believe it's February already!  I can't! The past year flew by for me as I worked on books and we added our oldest granddaughter to our household. We are back to taking a child to school, making sure her school work is done, and trying to find fun things for her to do.

I thought the days, weeks, months, and years went fast when my kids were growing up, but now as I'm older, they seem to go at warp speed.

This month's subject at RTG is Love. Makes sense. This is the month that many people spend money on gifts for the people they love or in the case of Valentines given out at school, to make sure everyone in the class feels loved.

As an adult, Valentine's Day doesn't mean a whole lot to me. I've gone through my marriage and parenthood showing those I love that I love them every day. It seems odd to pick a day and try to outdo what I do all year long.  I'll make heart shaped cookies and put the local grandkids names on them and distribute the cookies to each child. I always make a heart shaped cake on Valentines. That is my nod to the day. I bake most of the time, I just put it in heart shapes on February 14th.

I do wish I could bake a heart-shaped cookie for everyone in the world with their name on it to show that they are loved. And figure out a way to get them all delivered. That would be a chore. But it would be from my heart. I know there are many people out there who aren't loved and treated fairly.  Everyone deserves to be loved and feel special.

Speaking of feeling special...well I don't know if it's feeling special, but I have the newest Shandra Higheagle Mystery releasing on February 18th. Treat yourself to a Valentine's gift and pre-order.

This book took a lot of thought and heart. After writing the previous book, I decided this would be the last book in the Shandra Higheagle series. I went back and forth. I love writing Shandra and Ryan's stories. However, I didn't want to be an author who had readers saying they should have stopped the series three books earlier, and I had added children to the series in Capricious Demise. Those children made it hard to write a book that doesn't look like the character, people have come to love, is neglecting her family to put herself in danger. For that reason, I decided to end the series, with a little teaser at the end of the book. ;)

Vanishing Dream

Book 16 in the Shandra Higheagle Mystery series

Deception, Gluttony, Murder

Shandra Higheagle Greer’s deceased Nez Perce grandmother appears in her dream, dancing at a powwow. Since Grandmother only appears when there is a murder, Shandra believes, she, Ryan, and the twins should attend the yearly Powwow at the Colville Reservation.

While out for a walk the first night, Shandra sees someone lurking in the dark between the vendor tents. A vendor is discovered the next morning strangled with her own beads.

When members of Shandra’s family are attacked, she finds it hard to stay out of the investigation. While Ryan is working with the Tribal Police, Shandra follows a suspect and is captured. No one knows her whereabouts. Calling upon her grandmother seems futile. The dreams are vanishing and so could her life.

Paty, I agree with you, time seems to be flying at warp speed!! I really want it to slow down. Last night I FaceTimed with my son's family. When we moved up here his son, Cooper , was 2, now he is 12 1/2 yrs and his voice is starting to change here and there.

I make Valentine's cookies every year, usually to share with my friends. Not so this year. I may drop some off at a couple homes but that's it.

Your new Shandra book sounds really good, congrats!

Hi Diana,
It is hard to comprehend how fast the grandchildren grow! Thank you for stopping in and commenting.

Happy Valentine’s Season! I agree with wanting to show those I love affection and caring every day. I do love Valentine’s Day though. I love the heart decorations and the cheesy hallmark movies, the valentines books and of course, the cookies and cupcakes. I’m not quite at grandparents stage yet, but I’m looking forward to that in the next 10-15 years.

Shannon, I like the decorations. There is something about seeing hearts everywhere that makes a person feel good. Enjoy your youngsters, they grow too fast!

Congratulations on your latest and maybe last Shandra Higheagle (Greer) mystery! I'm in the show/tell people you love them every day or at least every day you see/talk to them. Although it has always been true, the reality that life can be fleeting seems more evident to me these days.

Sarah, I'm glad this post lifted your spirits! I adore the characters in my Shandra books, but felt it was time for a break.

Hi Judith! Thank you! I agree. The days go by so quickly lately that I feel like I don't see or talk to those I care about as much as I should.

I'm sure it is hard to end such a long and beloved series. But early results are that people think you did it perfectly. AND we all know that there are other possibilities to catch up with Shandra and Ryan in the future through spin-off series or coming back when the children are grown.

Looking forward to getting the book.

Hi Maggie, Thanks for stopping by! Yes, it was my kick-off mystery that made me happy with how well it was received. And as you say, it could continue down the road. I hope you enjoy the book when you get it.
