Since my husband and I decided in April 2021 to move to CA to be closer to family my life has been in constant turmoil!
We spent the month of April in CA looking around to see what area we wanted to move to. We managed to narrow it down to two areas. Both with things we liked and didn’t like.
We came home to OR on May 1, 2021, and listed our house on the market three days later. After that came the whirlwind of packing all personal items, things off dressers or cupboards with glass doors. All photos and art work off the walls. The realtor wanted all items off the kitchen counters, end tables in living and bedrooms and bathroom counters. Next came pictures by a professional photographer.
Meanwhile, it was like living in a warehouse. The area rugs had all been rolled up and put in the garage. Walking into the living room everything echoed. The house had lost its personality!!!
The OR realtor knew what he was doing. Our house sold 3 weeks to the day of being listed.
Now the garage has 200 Costco black with yellow lid storage boxes stacked up inside with our belongings. Our first trip back to CA will be to take those boxes. Then sign papers for the new house, and come back to OR to load up the furniture and the last of our stuff, then ‘Adios!’.
We’ve been smarter about this move and have hired help on both ends of the move to load and unload the rental truck.
My writing life has been put on hold during this time. Our new place has several options for writing room/areas and even in the sun room off the living room. I have options!!
In my whole life and through two marriages I’ve moved 21 times. How many times have you moved?
May you all have a peaceful and blissful summer!

Hi Diana,
From growing up in the military and then living in several apartments and three houses as an adult, I've done my share of moving. You did it the smart way by hiring help--hope you enjoy the new home.
I am so happy for you, Diana.
I moved around a lot as a kid into teen years, where we settled in one house for my high school years. My dad worked for the U.S. government so we lived overseas a lot. Since my marriage and then divorce, I have moved 17 times (and that doesn't include college housing.) WOW - I hadn't realized.
Your new home and area sound lovely. So glad you will be close to family and at peace.
Yeah! You've found a great house and property close to family. Thankfully there is Zoom and we can still "see" each other. I agree with Lynn that you are smart to hire folks to do the loading and unloading. When things go so smoothly, it was meant to be.
Lynn Thanks for stopping by!
Deb, You did move a lot! and overseas how nice for you to enjoy the cultures of other countries.
Judith, Thank you. Yes Zoom will be a life saver. Since we've been doing it all year, I won't have to learn something new!
That's lovely, Diana. I hope you will be very happy there.
I think I figured that I've moved at least 11 times. But the last move in 1973 landed us in the country in Oregon, and here we will stay. We've been in our house for 48 years. I do not want to move ever again.
Barb,
Thanks for stopping by!~ I don't intend to move again either.
I don't want to have to pack everything up ever again.
Diana
Lovely home, Diana, and so glad you have your peace. It looks just beautiful and so good to be close to family.
I counted up and Deb and I are running neck and neck with moving. As close as I tell, I have had nineteen. Amazing.
Your picture of the new home is absolutely stunning. The yard looks like fairly easy maintenance, the blue sky above definitely reminds me of the Bend area (when there are no fires). Your post sounds really full of joy and peace. I am so happy for you, your new home, and being closer to more of your family. You were very wise to hire help to do the actual lifting and moving of your belongings.
As to moving, I counted up sixteen moves since I left college. That is a lot more than I realized had happened. I believe we are in our final home now. However, I am open to one more move if certain circumstances arise in our life. As a child I only moved three times but only remember two of them.
I'm excited to see more pictures as you get settled in and make this new home your own. And for you to have the time and space for writing again!
Diana, you are going to get so much more content living next to family. The words will come in a flood once you are settled, I'm sure of it. Your new house looks inviting.
We've moved 23 times in 50 years, I think. I'm so glad you are moving near your kids and grandkids! You'll love it!
