Thankful for Alaska Summers by Lynn Lovegreen

For this month’s “Thankful” theme, I considered all the things I am thankful for: family, friends, good health, and so on. I could easily write about any of those things, but I thought I’d pick something a little different.

I am thankful for living in Alaska. It’s a beautiful place, with friendly people who are often quirky individuals. This time of year, I especially love Alaska because of the long days, fun activities, and lovely scenery. Here are a few examples.

Denali National Park is easiest to visit in the summer.

Riding the train to Spencer Glacier is another treat.

The wildlife at Katmai National Park is awesome, too.

Prince William Sound is my favorite area in the world.

I am so thankful I get to see these things on a regular basis. Summer in Alaska is magical.

What are you thankful for where you live?

Lynn Lovegreen has lived in Alaska for over fifty years. After twenty years in the classroom, she retired to make more time for writing. She enjoys her friends and family, reading, and volunteering at her local library. Her young adult historical fiction is set in Alaska, a great place for drama, romance, and independent characters. Lynn, I am thankful I have mountains to look at (Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens and on a clear day from the Marquam Bridge even Mt. Rainier). I'm about 30 minutes from Multnomah Falls and less than that to enter the Columbia River Gorge where I usually see osprey, hawks and vultures. Driving west, I'm an hour from the Oregon Coast. I never tire of seeing waves crashing on rocks or even plain waves rolling onshore. Even though this has been a hellish summer (another 100+ day of heat), I fondly remember our wet summers where everything bloomed and flourished.

Alaska in the summer sounds wonderful! My husband and I have an Alaska visit on our to do list. Sometime in the next couple of years.

We just moved to Paradise, CA. It's beautiful here in the foothills and lakes are within a 20min drive. It's not so good to be outside right now because of all the smoke from wild fires.

Enjoyed your post.

Thanks for the comment, Diana. May the smoke subside so you can enjoy Paradise, and all your travel dreams come true!

I envy your Alaska summers. I suspect they are cooler than here. I spent a couple weeks in Alaska in July about 20 years ago. It was beautiful--pristine lakes for kayaking, gorgeous tall mountains, and deep blue skies. I must admit though the lack of darkness was hard on my sleep patterns. I am by nature a night owl so having more daylight is great, but having no real night time was difficult. Perhaps if I lived there year round it would be different.
