Best Advise I Give Myself...

By Ann Chaney

 Hello Everyone,

This is my first blogpost for RTG and it’s so nice to be here. I’ll be co-blogging with Robin Weaver the 1st Wednesday of each month. We’re trying to divide and conquer.

I write English Regency romantic suspense with closed bedroom doors. I’ve been writing for nine years and have published two books in my Lord of Whitehall series: Dangerous Pursuit and Dangerous Liaison. This March, I will be publishing the third book of the series, Dangerous Illusions.

So… What’s the best advice I give myself each January?

Not sure if my self-advice is all that positive. I have the distinctive reputation of being a “Doom and Gloom Annie,” so I’m aiming for more positivity. This year’s advice: Forget what happened in the previous year.

January 1st is the start of a new year so I’m taking my lessons learned and charging forward into the unknown. After all, my penchant for looking at the worst scenarios will prevent me from stepping off the edge of the cliff. At least I hope so.

I’ll start over with my family. Make plans for trips together. Talk about how we want to spend our time together. After months of the pandemic social distancing, we’re feeling the need to be together. To make memories.

How do I start over each year with my writing? I get back to the basics. I clean and reorganize my office.

I write Regency set in 1800-1830 which means I own writing crafts books and historical research books. Like all writers, I have far too many books, but I can’t curb my addiction. Sorting and shelving new books will take me a couple of days. I’m always trying to reorganize the shelves so I have quick access to each book. That goal is a huge challenge.

As I tackle each chore, I find my energy level ramping upward. I know mopping the floor or re-shelving books doesn’t sound like a fun activity, but for me, the process of reclaim my writing space is like writing a book. I’m a pantser. I don’t plot out a story before writing. I never know exactly what will transpire and how the story will end. While I wish I could be one of those authors who plot each scene, I do love venturing into the abyss.

Once the cleaning and rearranging is complete, I’m ready to write!

And hope you are, too.

Happy New Year, Everyone.

Welcome Ann!

What's important is that you have a process that works for you. As a fellow pantser, I also love the adventure of writing. However, I write contemporary and about life experiences I've lived or have born witness to so research is at a minimum and that suits me to a "T".

And, how exciting to have "Dangerous Illusions" almost ready to join her sisters!
