By Ann Chaney
This month’s topic is one I have toyed with for years. I don’t have one special number. I have two. My primary special number is 8 and my secondary number is 16. I have a thing about 5 too. No real connection, but the number shows up a lot. Example: our current house number is 3355
Why these numbers?
I was born on July
8, so this is all about moi.
My wonderful
husband, John was born on September 16.
Our mothers were
born on the 16th of the month.
Every house we’ve
ever bought has had a house number that was a variation on 8.
I love numbers. I enjoy recomputing numerical value of a number. No huge numbers--I’m not a math person. I consider my preoccupation with my numbers much like doodling. Anytime I feel my attention start to wander, I work through all sorts of basic math problems with my special numbers.
Seriously, I’m not
a math person. I was that student who loved to read. Each year math class was
an uphill climb, but hey, by the eighth grade I had read every book in my
elementary school library. The librarian ordered new books so I would have
books to read for my required book reports. I know, I would have been a better
student if I had spent as much time with my math book as I did with
autobiographies, fairy tales, adventure stories, teenage romance, travel books,
history tomes and the Classics. You must admit, one can’t escape day-to-day
life in a math book.
Full disclosure: *None of my children or grandchildren were born on my special number days.
*Oh! I almost forgot. My husband and I had our first date on August 16. He proposed on September 16. We were married on October 23, 1982. Yep, almost 41 years ago Note: 4+1=5). He still calls me his bride. My hubby also says I’m his first wife. Hey, I tell him he’s my last husband.
*Not a single step in our lives has been planned around our dates. Most of the time, we only realize the significance of the date, address, etc. after the fact. There’s something calming about the numbers 8 or 16 popping up in our lives. Most times it’s almost like a voodoo experience. Feels like someone is watching over us. When we saw our current house for the first time, neither of us looked at the house number. Love at first sight. Would have bought it regardless. Only when real estate agent had us sign documents did we see #3355. We smiled at each other. It was meant to be.
And we have and are living happily ever after.
Another favorite
number is 3 as in Three Perspectives by R. Quinn Howard.

The Three Perspectives sounds interesting!
I tend to like the numbers 5 and 12 the month and day my hubby and were married 44 years ago this month.
Ann, Love this post for a variety of reasons. I'd have to say 2 and 8 and 4 have showed up a lot in the last 47 years. House number 2824, my landline number 288-1528. On bad days I'd get them confused. Now I only have a cell phone but hey 887-1492.
Writing 3 Perspectives looks to be a fun time with author friends.
Enjoyed your post, Ann! My favorite number has been 4 for as long as I can remember - for no particular reason that I can remember.
Your Three Perspectives books sound interesting. Writing with others can be fun, despite the occasional headaches.
