In my contemporary romance, Margo Simmons, has a phobia about people who overindulge in alcoholic drinks. Her father is an out and out drunk who has embarrassed her on many occasions. So much so that when she meets Edward, the hero of the story, she imbibes with caution.
In fact, Margo was going out with her high school crush. They parted ways. He called to see her. She had such high hopes because she was sweet on him in school. He hadn’t changed a bit. As self-centered as ever. Margo truly has every reason to lead with her head in relationships and not her heart. However, her compassion overflows for a little girl in jeopardy of being placed in a foster home when he r mother dies.
The true test for Margo and Edward comes when she decides to
adopt the child. Will Edward flee from parental responsibility since they’re
talking about marriage? This will be a deal breaker for her. To her dismay, the
child senses the friction between Margo and Edward and runs away. This is when
Edward realizes how much he cares for Margo and the child and that he must put
his past behind him and be grateful for the chance to start over with a woman
of substance and determination.
Thank goodness I didn't have that problem with any member of my family, but to my chagrin, on my first job in New York City, I had a co-worker who came back from lunch each workday inebriated. The woman would laugh for minutes on end while we waited to receive our work schedules, which were always filled with errors.
Finally, one day she rose from her desk at the end of a challenging day and announced she wouldn't be back.
We later learned that the boss needed something asap, and she was too incoherent to furnish the information so she was asked to leave.
Thank goodness I never had a situation like that again.
In my story, Margo's father fades out of the picture, but it leaves her with mixed emotions of wanting to meet a partner and traumatized that she'll repeat her mother's mistake.
