As we head into the holiday season I always get a little nostalgic. My children are grown with children of the their own. How the heck did that happen? It seems like only yesterday that our kids were toddlers and filled with wide-eyed anticipation for all things Christmas.
I have two favorite memories of those days. One Christmas Eve we were driving home after celebrating with my husband’s parents. The north wind was howling. The kids looked out the car window and started screaming and bouncing in their seats.
“There’s Santa sleigh,” they both shouted. “Hurry, we have to get home and put out the cookies we made for Santa.”
I looked out the window and in the distance I could see a pole with a red light on top (aviation obstruction light). The hurricane-force winds made it sway, and it looked just like Santa’s sleigh. My husband and I smiled, playing along. He accelerated, the kid’s excited screeches filling the car as they could see the light all the way home. We raced around and set out cookies and milk. The kids were in bed and asleep in record time, and they still talk about that Christmas Eve. Such a great memory.
Another Christmas they were older, but they hadn’t lost their excitement for Christmas. They’d asked for roller blades, and we not only gotten them the skates, but hockey sticks, pads, pucks, and a goalie net.
While the kids were downstairs watching television, my husband and I went upstairs to our bedroom to sort through it all and start wrapping. We’d left the bedroom curtains open not realizing the kids had crept outside and into their treehouse where they could see directly into our bedroom. Before we got everything out, we figured out what they were up to and closed the curtains.
Such fun when I think back on it. I really miss those Christmases, but the good news is, we’re making new ones with the grandkids like our three-year-old granddaughter telling us in July how much she “woves” Christmas. So much fun and a lot less stress!

Best childhood memory: hearing sleigh bells outside my window on Christmas Eve.
Best adult memory: watching my parents enjoy Christmas morning with the family including their grandkids
Best Christmas memories: The year I got a fancy xylophone that I wanted so much, and the year we spent Christmas in Pennsylvania with my Grandparents and it snowed!!!
The Christmas memory that pops immediately to mind is the year I was gifted a Thumbelina doll - a newborn doll that, when you pulled a cord, squirmed and mewled like a baby. Sort of. LOL. My dad built her a little bed and Mum sewed a mattress and blanket. I sold my doll about twenty years ago for a surprising amount.
Those memories of Christmas past are precious. Nothing beats the wonder of very young children seeing trees and lights and then when a bit older the gifts. Thanks for sharing your memories with us, Kathy.
I miss driving around looking at holiday lights with my granddaughters. We'd oooh and aaah and once home fix hot chocolate with marshmallows and vote on which display we liked best.
