Note: This month, many of us are re-posting our favorite blog posts. This originally ran in Romancing the Genres in 2022.
There are so many great quotes out there. You can find inspiring quotes about love, life, books, writing, you name it! It was hard to pick my all-time favorite, but one kept coming up for me:
I saw it first in a “cryptoquote” puzzle in the newspaper years ago, and it hit a nerve with me. I cut it out and stuck it on a window frame where I could see it often. A couple moves later, it’s on a shelf in my current guest room/study.
It’s one of those quotes that has different interpretations depending how you look at it. At first, I was thinking of sweet, simple things like wildflowers and sunsets. Later, I included acts like reading a good book and sipping a cup of tea. As I get older, those sweet, simple things also include time with loved ones.
Especially after the last few years, I value everyday moments with my husband. A cup of tea with a friend is special. Sharing a meal with my daughter and her family are precious. No huge expense or effort is needed. Laura was right. It really is the “sweet, simple things in life which are the real ones….”
What are the real things in your life?

I agree, Lynn - so "simple" things which really aren't so simple, but so important - our family and friends. And the other things that might be daily habits, like a cup of tea. I always get "grief" from my family about all the various tea boxes staked up. But each kind of tea hits a mood or meets a need. Not long ago, I used the last of a favorite winter, holiday tea. A box I had for way too long, because I couldn't bear to use up the last tea bag. Yesterday at the grocery store, I turned down an aisle, and on a special display was that wonderful seasonal tea - stacks of them - Vanilla Cranberry Wonderland by Celestial Seasons. I bought two boxes. I brewed a big mug to take to my local writing group's holiday potluck. Simple pleasures. Yet so important in our lives.
Yes, Deb! I'm a tea person too. I totally understand your tea collection--I have one too. And how wonderful you were able to get that special holiday tea when you needed it!
I'm joining the tea collection party. I've a shelf of various flavors although I tend to favor a mug of Irish Breakfast tea with milk in the morning. And the simple things for me also include simplifying my life, routines, etc. That leaves more time for other sweet simple things like reading that good book, spending time with friends and maybe putting a few new words on paper that in time will become a new book.
Good ideas, Judith!
Spending time with family and friends, praying, hugs, chocolate, coffee, spending time with a pet or a garden, a walk in nature, listening to music, making music, reading, creating, making or learning something new. Great quote and great post!!!
