Unsung Writing Sheroes!

By: Marcia King-Gamble

In honor of  the 4th of July, Independence Day, I am saluting all the talented Indies out there. Authors like Sophia Knightly- http://www.sophiaknightly.net/ ,  my co-author Bettye Griffin - http://www.bettyegriffin.com/ Traci Hall http://www.tracihall.com/  and our  wonderful Blog Queens,  Judith Ashley and Sarah Raplee of Windtree Press . http://windtreepress.com/.

At Windtree Press you can visit authors like Patty Jager, Diana McCollum, Linda Lovely and Courtney Pierce.  Indie authors like fellow Generista, and Florida Romance Writer, Kristin Wallace can be found  @ http://kristinwallaceauthor.com/

While I hate to sound like a negative Nelly, the reality is that times are tough for writers. Not that they’ve not been tough before. Publishing houses are closing, and/or merging and new or aspiring authors, (even we oldies), need every platform we can get.  Even well-established authors  are jumping on the Indie bandwagon. There's something about being in control of your life and knowing what your monthly income is that's downright appealing.

For those trying to get published, and those looking for a new publishing home, don't dismiss the power of the contest. Contests are a great opportunity to showcase your talent. So where do you find contests? The local chapter of  your American Romance Writers is a good place to start. The feedback you get is invaluable and the finalists get their work read by a published author, or editor at a traditional publishing house.

A few years back, I judged of one of these contests and discovered a voice that was truly unique.  From the author’s opening sentence she had me hooked. While she did not win the contest, I knew that voice would  be heard over and over again.

That unique voice was that of author, Sasha Summers who sent me a lovely thank you note.  Her words were sincere and heartfelt.  About a year and a half later, (make that two), her first book was being published, and I gave her a quote.  This is what I wrote:

"My new favorite author is Sasha Summers, She's as addictive as chocolate."
Marcia King-Gamble

Talent like Sasha’s needed to be recognized.  You can find out about Sasha Summers and her books right here:  http://sashasummers.com/

Another author with a heart stopping voice is Simona Taylor aka Roslyn Carrington.  Just hearing her name, makes me want to curl up in an armchair and devour her books.   Simona aka Roslyn hails from the beautiful Caribbean island of Trinidad.

I first met her when she attended the annual Romance Writers of America conference in Anaheim, California.  Her agent at the time was Deidre Knight. Who knew that years later I would be represented by the Knight Agency.

One of Roslyn’s most memorable books is the literary masterpiece, A Thirst for Rain. That book was meant to be made into a movie. It’s the kind of book you read over and over again. Each sentence holds such vivid imagery.

Roslyn still resides in Trinidad and owns The Scribble Pad. In addition to writing romance novels, she’s written a comic and coloring book. She's also developed an interactive board game. You can find information about Simona Taylor and her books here: https://www.fantasticfiction.com/t/simona-taylor/

A shout out goes to the talented members of my South Florida Romance Writers group. Information about the group can be found here: http://www.frwriters.org/.  New members are always welcomed.

Since summer is now officially on,  I am counting on readers to support your Indie authors.  Please check out our bundle at Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Pick up the bundled copy of the Holiday Sparkle series here:  http://a.co/4WbIQmz  and here:  http://bit.ly/2rUSidq

Get yourself an awesome beach read!

Romantically Yours.

Spotlight on Florida Writers by Kristin Wallace

This month on RTG, we’re promoting other authors. We were told we could pick a theme or simply authors we love. I decided to go with a sort-of theme and feature Florida authors. Now, they might not all write stories that take place in Florida (although some do), but they all reside in my home state. They are fellow members of my local writers chapter Florida Romance Writers (FRW), a chapter of Romance Writers of America (RWA) in southeast Florida (Miami, Ft. Lauderdale, Palm Beach, and the Keys).

Most write in a variety of romance genres, but others are published in genres outside of romance, including historical fiction and mysteries.

So, here they are….

Susannah Gautier – Susannah writes YA & adult romance, including paranormal, suspense as well as cyber-punk/dystopian. She pens the Black Dragon Elite & Dark Legends Series.

Traci Hall - Traci is a prolific author of contemporary, historical and YA/paranormal romance. Her By the Sea Series features fun and sexy romances set in South Florida.

Sharon Hartley – Author of contemporary romantic suspense.

Sophia Knightly – Sophia is a USA Today & NYT bestselling author of sexy and heartwarming contemporary romance.

Jessica Rachel Kreger – Jessica pens sweet contemporary romances that bring modern fairy tales to life. Her debut novel, Fit To Love, launched earlier this year.

Michael Meeske (V.S. Alexander) – Michael writes across genres, including romance, mystery, suspense, gothic and historical fiction. His historical novel, The Magdalen Girls written under the name V.S. Alexander, launched in January.

Aleka Nakis – Aleka writes steamy contemporary romances that blend her passions for story telling, travel, exotic locations and sexy heroes.

Writing Lessons of a Lifetime by Kristin Wallace

The theme on Romancing the Genres for August is “life-changing events”. It took some thought to come up with mine. What one event changed my life? Truthfully, every event changes your life in some way. I don’t have a husband or kids…things that many might say changed their lives...so it’s hard to pin down.

Then I thought about my writing journey and how long it took to become a published author. My true success began the day I went to my first Florida Romance Writers (FRW) meeting in 2005. FRW is the Southeast Florida chapter of Romance Writers of America.

When I joined FRW, I had been “writing” for a long time, but it never went anywhere because I had no idea what I was doing. Joining FRW literally changed my life. Now, I am not a natural “joiner”. I’m a classic introvert. I HATE walking in to a room full of strangers. But I walked into that room…and I stayed.

I learned how to write a novel. Each month I would learn something different, from crafting sentences, to dialogue, to marketing, and the ins and outs of publishing. I would often go home thinking I would NEVER get it. There was so much to learn! But I did learn it.

I also gathered a wonderful group of writer friends whom I adore. There were mentors, critique partners, people who would share their expertise, those who encouraged when needed. I can honestly say I would not have a writing career without FRW and the many people who have taught me what it means to be an author.

Kristin Wallace is the USA Today Best Selling Author of inspirational and sweet contemporary romance filled with “Love, Laughter and a Leap of Faith”. Look for her latest release coming SOON! A 2-book box set containing LEFT TURN AT PARADISE and COMING HOME TO PARADISE, Book 1 and Book 1.5 of the Shellwater Key Tales. Find out more about her books at Kristin's Website
