Finding Peace in Troubled Times

Hi, I’m Judith Ashley, author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, soul nourishing romantic women’s fiction with light paranormal elements. My stories show you what life could be like if you had a place like The Circle where you are unconditionally accepted, supported and loved. And where, with this support, you make choices to overcome the darkest nights of your life to choose love and light.

I’ve many things to be thankful for including the reality that, because I know and understand the teaching of Dr. William Glasser, I have the ability to find my way through difficult, challenging and scary times. Actually, I wrote about it in 2018 in Staying Sane in A Crazy World.

Blending Dr. Glasser’s Reality Therapy© and Choice Theory© with The Serenity Prayer, I show you how to find that sanity, that peace of mind, that can, at times, be missing in our lives.

Here are a 3 of the key principles to staying sane.

#1 – What are your Core Values? Do an honest assessment and Be Specific. For example: if a core value is to be a lifelong learner, do you seek views that are opposite of ones you hold? Do you encourage other people, including children to question what they are being told or taught? If not, what is your definition of a lifelong learner?

My first and most important Core Values is that we are all spiritual beings and are all a part of The Sacred and thus we are all connected. Because this is a Core Value, I see the world and people around me as connected to me. The words from the Bible “do unto others as you would have them do unto you” means I treat other people as part of The Sacred. A challenge comes when I realize I may have not done so. I’m not perfect and sometimes I do not live up to my Core Values.

What then? Correct course. Apologize if appropriate. Make amends if appropriate.

What not to do? Blame the other people/person for my choice. Assume they will do something to me to “pay me back”. Build a stronger wall that will keep us apart.

#2. Break it down. Most of the time when we see ourselves struggling and liable to fail, we turn to the negative instead of breaking it down. For example: the world isn’t operating like it has for centuries or at least how we think it was operating.

To break it down, we’d need to be willing to educate ourselves as to whether that was true or not. Perhaps we were younger when it happened. Perhaps it was a generation or two before us. Perhaps it was in another part of the country or world and we didn’t hear about it. Perhaps we did hear about it but dismissed it as not something that would ever happen to us.

Once we’ve sorted things out, we’ll know what to do next.

#3. Make a plan. That sounds so simple and in many ways it is, however, in making a plan that fits Dr. Glasser’s teachings, the plan can only depend on us, the plan maker. It is our plan. We create it and we work it and we tweak it if needed.

Simon and Garfunkle’s “Bridge Over Troubled Waters” has a line “I will ease your mind”. In dark times, it is up to us to do it for ourselves. For some of us that will mean relying on our spiritual practices whatever they may be. For some of us it may mean time in nature, watching funny movies, getting out the old picture albums and reliving earlier times.

We do know what we need in order to identify and clarify our Core Values, to right our course and to make a plan. We might not want to, however that doesn’t mean we can’t.

If you need some guidance to find your way here are some suggestions:

The Ups and Downs of My Writing Career

Hi, I’m Judith Ashley, author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, soul nourishing romantic women’s fiction with light paranormal elements. My stories show you what life could be like if you had a place like The Circle where you are unconditionally accepted, supported and loved. And where, with this support, you make choices to overcome the darkest nights and choose love and light.

I can summarize the “Downs” of my writing career in a couple of sentences. I’ve not written much of anything beyond blog posts since December 2019. And while I have 30K+ words written on Visions of Ireland. I’m not sure I will ever finish it.

Now some of you will say “Oh, the Pandemic!” However, so much more was going on in my personal life that affected my writing life than the pandemic.

Those of you who are writers know that we categorize ourselves as plotters or pantsers and some are hybrid meaning they are a bit of both. I’ve categorized myself as a pantser because I do not plot nor do I do character studies, etc. What I’ve come to see about my writing, at least my fiction, is that I’m a dream/vision writer.

My eight novels, The Sacred Women’s Circle series and Visions of Happiness, a spin off from TSWC series were written from dreams and visions I had. Sometimes I’d get up in the middle of the night, the picture of the scene, the dialogue so clear in my mind that all I did was type it onto the computer before going back to bed.

I will admit that there were times, early on in my process, that I wondered about my sanity. And, once the story was written out, the visions and dreams ceased, at least for that story <smile>.

At one point I would have said that my process for writing non-fiction was different except that, as I share in the opening of Staying Sane in a Crazy World, a vision flashed before me as I was driving on the freeway (and yes, I do keep my guardian angels busy).

So when my personal health faltered, those visions and dreams took a break. For the most part. I have written over 30 blog posts for Romancing The Genres and Windtree Press, a have a story (2200 words so very short) about how I dealt with CoVid in Covidology: Sharing Stories From Behind The Mask and the beginning of a short story popped into my head for several nights – well, until I got up and wrote it down.

What’s interesting is that while I know scientist say we all dream, I seldom remember a dream. What fascinates me and I pay close attention to especially after having written eight fiction novels and one non-fiction is that those that stick with me upon waking have more to say.

How does that happen? I get a flash of that dream in visions during the day or I’ll hear the voices of the characters as they go forth with their story. It can be unnerving although since a decade or two has passed since the first dream, I pay attention to the details in the vision and listen to the dialogue. Then I check with some internal something inside me that says “Now, go write it down Now!”

I’m grateful the dreams and visions have begun again although nothing coherent. Or perhaps more accurately nothing I can yet make sense of. And that internal something? Still quiet.

What is my plan going forward? One is to self-narrate the audio book for Staying Sane in a Crazy World. I’ve a few bits and pieces of that process to work out. I’ve done a five minute test and it went well so I think I can do the rest.

And I’ve a You Tube Channel that has been silent since 2015ish. At a live event for the Covidology Anthology, I read parts of that story to the audience. I’m considering doing that as a video and putting it up on the You Tube Channel.

Of course, that all comes under the heading of “it depends on” and that list has several entries. The main one is health as that affects my energy level and all of the above takes a chunk. When a successful day is getting up, getting dressed and feeding myself, there is nothing left for audio books or You Tube Channels.

And that, I expect, is why the internal something is quiet when it comes to writing things down. It knows it’s not quite time…almost but not quite.

On Holiday Stories and Dithering

Hi, I’m Judith Ashley, author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, stories that show you what life could be like if you had a place like The Circle where you are unconditionally accepted, supported and loved. And where, with this support, you make choices to overcome the darkest nights and choose love and light.

Do you ever dither?

I will admit I’ve become more of a ditherer than ever these past few years. I will also admit that I don’t like to dither. I understand procrastination better than I understand dithering although they do have some similarities.

What does dithering have to do with the Blog Queens’ November writing prompt?

I can only answer for myself for several reasons the main one being I’ve no idea if Sarah McDermed, co-Blog Queen, is dithering…I am.

How do you know that? I’ve blathered on for 85 words without really saying anything. My normal process is to sit down at the computer, remind myself of the monthly prompt and start typing. For this month, I’ve been dithering since August!

What’s so hard about the topic “Holiday Stories”?

First: I’ve not read any. I’ve been rereading my keeper shelves’ books and while there are a couple that have a holiday somewhere, it hasn’t been The Focus and I’ve probably already talked about them in previous years.

Second: The holiday story I was working on last year Winter Solstice: Charlie and Amethyst is still waiting for a bit more editing, tweaking before it’s published. 2022 has not been a good year for my writing life. Please hold positive thoughts it will be featured in 2023!

Third: The phrase holiday story or holiday stories when talked about in October and November brings to mind the fall and winter holidays (Halloween through New Year’s focusing on Thanksgiving and Christmas). That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s just not where my mind and writing goes.

So where do my mind and writing go? The eight High Holy Days of the pagan calendar:

Samhain
Yule aka Winter Solstice
Imbolc aka Candlemas
Ostara aka Spring Equinox
Beltane

Lithia aka Summer Solstice
Lammas
Mabon aka Fall Equinox

It’s been 30 years since I began adding these days of celebrating the cycle of the earth into my more traditional upbringing. I don’t remember exactly when I began dropping some of those traditional holidays. However, within the last decade they are pretty much gone. For example, no more turkeys for Thanksgiving because I don’t celebrate Thanksgiving on the 4th Thursday of November. I make an effort to give thanks be in gratitude each and every day. And I do not enjoy large family gatherings. Actually any large gathering is stressful because of my hearing and some vestibular issues.

What changed?

In some ways, nothing. When I look back on my life, I see a strong spiritual path from my childhood wending its way through to now. What is different is how I manifest it. These days I use Gaia, Mother Nature and Earth-based practices to express my spiritual self.

On this path, one of the greatest gifts came when the women in my Sacred Women’s Circle series began showing up in dreams and visions, their voices clear and insistent about what they wanted me to say not only about their life journeys but how they manifested their dreams into reality?

I’d already been involved in women’s circles for almost decade when I started writing so I had a foundation. I’d attended close to a dozen Women of the 14th Moon gatherings. I was celebrating the pagan holidays so the foundation to tell their stories was there.

The stories

When you read my books, you’ll see that these women have created their own earth-based or pagan spiritual practices. And as they find their happy-ever-after, they choose to marry on one of the High Holy Days…although not Samhain. This High Holy Day marks the beginning of the pagan calendar for many.

For myself, I choose to start my new year on Winter Solstice. I love the dark of night, the colder temperatures, the firelight by which to read or contemplate who I am and how I fit into the world around me. And there is always much to contemplate as both the world and I are evolving, changing, adjusting.

This year I’ve much to review as 2022 has been a bigger challenge for me than most of my eighty plus years. I hope that as I sit in front of the fire, drumming on my horsehide or maybe my elk drum, I’ll hear new voices and see new visions and 2023 will be a year for sharing those stories with you.

I also write non-fiction. Learn more about Staying Sane in a Crazy World.  If you take the time, you end up with a Personal Staying Sane Plan tailored to help you through the challenging times.

Romance Awareness Month and Old Stories

Hi, I’m Judith Ashley, author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, soul nourishing romantic women’s fiction with light paranormal elements. My stories show you what life could be like if you had a place like The Circle where you are unconditionally accepted, supported and loved. And where, with this support, you make choices to overcome the darkest nights and choose love and light.

This month the Genre-istas are sharing their perspective on either, or maybe both topics: Old Stories or Romance Awareness Month.

August is National (USA) Romance Awareness Month. Independent books stores across the United States have planned signings and other events to showcase authors (especially local ones) who write in this popular genre. Most likely you are reading this early in the month as it goes live on August 5th. You can check your local indie book store or, if you can check out https://bookstoreromanceday.org/ for more information.

Old Stories?

Old Stories is the other topic. Many authors, when asked about when they first started writing, will talk about elementary or high school, maybe college. Others will talk about their first novel, buried under the bed or the back of a closet or drawer never to see the light of day.

There are many thoughts about those old stories. Here are mine.

While I’ve spent a great deal of my professional life writing (court reports, case notes, adoption home studies, post placement reports, and training programs complete with instructor and participant manuals, I never wrote fiction until late 1999/early 2000 when the visions, dreams and dialogue surrounding the seven women who are the main characters in The Sacred Women’s Circle series showed up.

I’ve no old stories to dig out and rewrite or polish. I do have a non-fiction book based on a training I developed that is waiting for me to rewrite or polish i.e. finish. And I do have the cover!

There are writers who thoughtfully consider story elements, do character studies, plot out each chapter, write synopses – in other words they have their story outlined before they start the actual book. Other writers are more like me. They sit down and see what shows up on the page.

I will admit that when I was writing Gabriella: Chaos and Symmetry, Sophia: Every Ending Is A Beginning and the first book in the “Visions” spinoff series, Visions of Happiness,  I had to keep track so the story line, time line and characters were congruent with what had come before. It’s very disconcerting as a reader to find a character’s hair and eye color change from one book to the next much less their age or another element of their life.

Dreams, Visions and Dialogue

The dreams, visions and dialogue that, at times, kept me up until all hours of the night, were my old stories. I’ve worked over fifty years in social services as well as survived some rocky spots in my own personal life. My characters are like many of us who have or are still facing issues: divorce, infidelity, domestic violence, single parenting, financial struggles, abandonment, overcoming childhood abuse, death of a spouse and then there are the physical challenges of recovery from a major accident or injury and recurrent breast cancer.

In many ways I share traits with these women. There is a piece of me in every story…more of me in some than in others. And no, I’ve not danced like Hunter: The Dancer and The Drum and I’ve made drums. I’ve not had a luscious garden like Sophia, but I love gardens and I have taught in a public high school. I’ve survived domestic violence, infidelity and divorce, raised a son and grandchildren, weathered financial struggles, dealt with cancer although not breast cancer. And once I had my own circle of women who accepted, supported and loved me, as well as my spiritual practices that bring me peace, all the trials and tribulations that still occur in my life are easier.

When you read my Sacred Women’s Circle series you meet seven women who will remind you of yourself or someone you know or someone you love who also struggles with these everyday issues. You will learn how Lily, Elizabeth, Diana, Ashley, Hunter, Gabriella and Sophia overcome those obstacles and with the acceptance and support of The Circle find their Happily-Ever-After.

My non-fiction: Staying Sane in a Crazy World, provides you with a template to create your Personal Staying Sane Plan to help you through the challenging times.

In love and light by Judith Ashley

Hi, I’m Judith Ashley, author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, soul nourishing romantic women’s fiction with light paranormal elements. My stories show you what life could be like if you had a place like The Circle where you are unconditionally accepted, supported and loved. And where, with this support, you make choices to overcome the darkest nights and choose love and light.

February, the month of love and romance, becomes focused on February 14th, at least here in the United States.  But what about February 15th or even April 15th or September 15th? What about celebrating this month of love and romance during an on-going pandemic?

Thousands of people who live alone, myself included, have been experiencing “skin hunger” from the lack of hugs. Untold thousands have been denied the ability to hold the hand of someone they loved and cared about as they crossed over to another realm. Saying those precious three words “I Love You” over the phone or on a virtual call is better than nothing but lacks some essential energy that is only available when face-to-face and looking into each other’s eyes.

While certainly not The Answer, here are some of my thoughts:

I adopted the phrase “In love and light” as my author tag line and my signature line decades ago when I realized I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to let people know they were special. As I write this or any other blog post, when I write an email or send a text as I click on publish or send, I visualize a stream of love and light following along.

This year I’m working on expanding this practice to saying Thank You to everyone who assists me through the day. The grocery store clerk, the gas station attendant, the bank clerk, the receptionist, the people in my neighborhood who step to the street so I can remain on the sidewalk. I’m doing fairly well with this practice especially when I’m focused on where I am and what I’m doing.

One interaction that lightens and brightens my day is if, at the end of a transaction whether on the phone or in person, I’m asked if there is anything else I need, I now response “Yes, for you to have a fantastic rest of your day” or words to that effect.

While what I’m doing is not exactly a romantic gesture nor is it romantic in any way, from the bright smiles and warm voices it does matter to the other person.

So, do we need love? Is love all we need? I believe we do want to know, to actually feel loved unconditionally by at least one other person. We want to matter to someone else. I also believe we need to apply these same principals to ourselves: to love ourselves unconditionally, to forgive ourselves for being human and inevitably making mistakes and to treat ourselves with compassion.

Last month I shared Dr.William Glasser’s 7 Caring Habits. I know someone cares about me when they engage in those “loving” or “caring” behaviors. In other words, the words are not enough – at least for me. I want more. I want the words AND the loving, caring actions.

Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman says to Richard Gere that she wants it all. She wants the fairy tale. The truth is we each have our own “fairy tale” about love.

My wish for you is that you unconditionally love yourself so that your fairy tale comes true.

And, I’d love to know what your thoughts are about how to keep love and light alive throughout the rest of 2022 and beyond. I’ll be checking back and responding as the day goes on.

You can learn more about unconditional love and how to create relationships that work in my Sacred Women’s Circle series.

My Staying Sane in a Crazy World, provides you with a template to create your Personal Staying Sane Plan to help you through the challenging times.

What is Love?

Hi, I’m Judith Ashley, author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, romantic women’s fiction with light paranormal elements. My stories show you what life could be like if you had a place like The Circle where you are unconditionally accepted, supported and loved. And where, with this support, you make choices to overcome the darkest nights and choose love and light.

As a writer of romantic women’s fiction and contemporary romance this month’s prompt Love might have been an easy post to write. That would have been nice but that’s not what happened. However, since I’m also leading the Blog-Versation the weekend of February 13th, I now have 5 questions aimed at creating conversation.

Today I’m off in a different direction…a spin-off on the question “What Is Love?” There are many different loves. The love of a parent for a child and a child’s for a parent is one example. In romance novels, there is the romance between the main characters.

In my books, while each has that love story between the main characters, there is an underlying love story. That love story is not sexual or romantic. It is however about demonstrating unconditional acceptance of each other thus being able to “show up” however it is needed.

My own life includes being a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother along with being a niece, an aunt and cousin (first and on down the line). Showing up is something I have done personally and professionally. Asking someone to show up for me is an aspect of life I’m working on.

There is a gift we give someone when we ask for assistance. It can strengthen our connection to others by inviting them to be an important part of our lives.

Because we celebrate love and relationships on Valentine’s Day, it’s important to not lose sight on February 15th, that this month as in every month we improve the quality of our own lives when we look for ways to enhance our connections to others.

A first step is to look at what we are doing and saying that creates distance and disconnection. Listen to your tone of voice, your word choice and preferably stop or at least limit criticizing yourself and others. Taking responsibility for how we feel and what we do instead of blaming others isn’t always easy but it can be done.

My books illustrate how you can create those unconditionally supportive relationships. I also share tips in my monthly newsletter. You can sign up for Choices here.

Look for my next non-fiction Yes, You Can Create The Life You Love by late spring aka early summer. And if you need guidance on handling stress, Staying Sane in A Crazy World is available as are all of my books at your favorite e-book vendor. Be sure to ask your local library if you’d prefer to read my books through that resource.

Hope in The Midst of a Pandemic

Hi, I’m Judith Ashley, author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, soul nourishing romantic women’s fiction that honors pagan spiritual practices. My stories show you what life could be like if you had a place like The Circle where you are unconditionally accepted, supported and loved. And where, with this support, you do overcome obstacles and find your happily-ever-after.

If your 2020 has gone much like mine, you are finding your second or maybe even your third wind, that time when, in the midst of exhaustion and numbness, a burst of magical energy and creativity shine through. One of the advantages in having been around for many decades is that I know “this too shall pass.”
While I wasn’t here in 1918, I was here and a child during the polio epidemic. I had schoolmates that survived polio but could only walk with braces on their legs, using a cane or walker. Other survivors lived their lives in iron lung machines.
I remember being “bummed out” during the hot summer months that we couldn’t go swimming in the community pool. Somehow running through the sprinkler in our backyard just wasn’t the same. I also remember the sugar cube with the Salk vaccine.
In the early 1960’s I couldn’t complete my Student Teaching, the only thing left for my Bachelor of Arts degree because I was pregnant with my son. Teachers who became pregnant during a school year, lost their positions. The thinking at that time (of school boards (male dominated) school superintendents (men) and principals (all male)) was that it was harmful for children to be exposed to pregnant teachers.

Domestic violence, sexual harassment, stalking did not exist because there were no laws that named it or said it was wrong. When I was in a domestic violence situation in the 1960’s and went to the police, I was told I “belonged” to my husband and I should go home because there was nothing they could do. A husband had the right to hit his wife.

Why am I going on and on about the past?
Vote Vote Vote Vote Vote
Because a couple of weeks ago, Tuesday, August 18th, marked the 100th Anniversary of the passing of the 19th Amendment ensuring a Woman’s Right To Vote. White and Black Women had been asking, demonstrating and protesting for the right to vote since Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.
Vote Vote Vote Vote Vote
Celebrating the passing of the 19th Amendment to our Constitution in many ways seems like it happened centuries ago but the fact is I’m the 3rd generation in my family who has had the right to vote. I may be off a generation because I don’t know for sure if my great grandmother voted. When my great granddaughter is of age and votes, she will be the 5th or maybe 6th generation to benefit the passing of the 19th Amendment.

What does all of this have to do with Hope, Romance The Genre’s topic/writing prompt for September?

Vote Vote Vote Vote Vote
Today being able to vote has given women the opportunity to be heard, to see changes made to protect themselves and generations of women to come. The opportunity to take positions of leadership, to be active in their communities beyond their children’s classrooms, church auxiliaries, husband’s organization’s wives clubs.

Today if I went to the police with bruises from my husband’s fists, I would not be told I belonged to him and to go home. There are shelters and resources to help me and my child recover and get back on our feet.

Today if I was in college or teaching and became pregnant, I could continue my education, my profession until I went into labor should I choose to do so.
Vote Vote Vote Vote Vote
Today I can vote. I’m fortunate to live in Oregon, a state that has had Vote By Mail for over 20 years; a state that registers a person when they get their driver’s license; a state that gives voters the option of taking their ballot to an official ballot drop off box. I’ve never missed voting since I turned 21 and was eligible to do so however, being able to complete my ballot in the privacy of my home has been a blessing as I’ve aged. And in these days of Covid-19’s increasing numbers due to community spread, I feel safer and that my life, my health and well-being matters to my local and state governments.  I do still take my ballot to the library less than a mile from my home so I can personally drop it into the ballot box.

One of the gifts of living a longer life is Hope because I’ve seen change not only in the decades I’ve been alive but in the lives of my grandmother’s generation.

If you are feeling events are whirling out of your control, you are right. If you want to be in more control of those whirling events, consider purchasing my first non-fiction Staying Sane in a Crazy World.

Here are a couple of reviews that were posted on Amazon:

This is a short book but packed with good information about focusing on what you can and can't control. It provides a way for you to develop your own plan to keep you going every day. The author asks good questions to consider and leads you through the process of looking at the world in a different perspective and by the end you can feel that you are not lost in a world out of control.

This short read is chock full of helpful information and ideas to help the reader reclaim peace and calm in the craziness of day to day living. Straight-forward, to the point – no nonsense mumbo-jumbo. I can’t wait to put some of these ideas and strategies into action.
