Captain Andrew's Flying Christmas: A Great Steampunk Holiday Read

Well, it's that time of the year. Holidays. We've just had Halloween, next is Thanksgiving and then comes the best one of all, Christmas. A perfect time for magic and science to merge and become one really neat present. Since Steampunk is still emerging in the literature world, and gaining force, I haven't come across many full length novels with a holiday theme. So today, I'm going to discuss a lovely, light, and fun novella. Captain Andrew's Flying Christmas by Heather Heistand.

Captain Andrew's Flying Christmas was a fabulous read, especially for a short novella. Her characters are sweet, engaging and brave in a world of darkness and grime. Her heroine, Linet, as the daughter of an airship captain, had loved her life and her family until the fateful day her father was executed. Andrews, the current captain of her father's airship, Christmas, was a family friend when her father was alive and has returned to rescue her from a life of servitude. Captain Andrews has his own agenda and he's not ready to let her in on it, but his attraction for Linet pulls him to her repeatedly. Together they must free Linet's sister imprisoned in Newgate Prison before Christmas Day is over. Captain Andrew's Flying Christmas ends, of course with a happily ever after, but with a twist I don't want to spoil. Definitely a great Steampunk Christmas read. One I will keep reading every year during the holidays.

What are your favorite stories to read during the holidays? What are some of your favorite traditions?

Hi Mae,

I don't have a favorite holiday story that I reread each year but I do have favorite traditions. A wreath on my door (and usually one in the house too), bouquets of evergreen boughs and holly, and on Solstice, I light candles and reflect on what the past year has brought and what new light I want to manifest in my life.

Heather-fantastic cover! I have Cap't Andrew waiting in line on my e-reader.
For my holiday traditions--when I lived in CA--I would try and take a night to look at all the decorated store windows in downtown San Francisco, coffe or hot cocoa in hand and I would try and take 2-3 days to go to Disneyland. The park is insanely beautiful with all of the twinkle lights and ornaments. And now the castle is lit with thousands of LED lights.
Judith, what a wonderful tradition to light candles and reflect on the past and get clear on the future. I think we could all adopt this practice!

Heather: You're more than welcome. I'll count down the days until the sequel.

Judith: My favorite traditions start with celebrating birthdays then moving on to decorating. Our family always makes baskests of cookies and other yummy's for extended family and friends. The house always smells so good.

Shannon: I grew up os so-cal so I completely understand the Disneyland at Christmas. It's been quiet a few years since, but I remember it fondly.
