Refilling the Writer's Well

by Vivienne Lorret

Some writers find inspiration from crowds. Chatter and the energy of other people help to fill their well of ideas and inspire new characters. But I’m not one of those types of writers.

I am a fan of silence and solitude. My writer’s well is like Michigan J. Frog from the Saturday morning cartoons. You remember him, right? He was the frog that would sing “Hello, my baby. Hello, my honey. Hello, my ragtime gal…” but only in front of one person. In front of a crowd, all he would do was croak.

So when asked to write about my favorite place, you can probably imagine that mine isn’t the mall or an amusement park.

My favorite place is serene. My house is situated on parkland that used to be a bird sanctuary. I love walking the trails through the park. The natural springs are the perfect place to plot…

Ambling among the sweet gum, alder, and maple trees is the perfect place to comingle with characters...

Writing typically keeps us at our desks for hours on end. So it’s a joy to grab a breath of fresh air, stretch the legs, and take in the surrounding beauty. Not only that, but as a writer of Regency romance, I find that stepping away from technology is a useful tool to help me understand my characters.

I’m blessed to live near such an ideal location.

Thanks for letting me share my favorite place with you!

Vivienne, There is nothing wrong with solitude. I live in the middle of alfalfa country in eastern Oregon. My closest neighbor is a mile away and I'm 40 miles from town. I send hubby for groceries so I can stay home. Love solitude, but I still need some music to write. ;) Great post. Welcome to RTG!

Me, too! I'm definitely not a person whose creative well is filled being with lots of people whether I know and like them or not. I may not have the parkland to walk when stretching my legs but I do have a lovely well-established neighborhood where seldom are people outside in their yards.
