Campaign for Her Heart, the final story in the 12-book Decades: A Journey of African
American Romance historical romance series, is set in the 2010s. I
can almost hear you asking, “The 2010s? How’s that a historical romance? We’re
living the 2010s.” That’s one of the exciting things about the decade: We’re
making history – good, bad or indifferent – every day.
When author Wayne Jordan invited me to
participate in his project and assigned the decade of the 2010s to me, I knew
this was meant to be. I subscribe to the philosophy that history is cyclical
and I wanted to use that philosophy as the foundation of my story. One of
history’s powers is its ability to teach us. Conversely, history’s kryptonite
is our inability to learn from it. If we don’t learn from our history, if we
aren’t aware of historical facts and events, then we will repeat them.
Candidly, there are some members of history’s entourage to which I’d rather not be reintroduced.
The cautionary message of history repeating
itself is one of the themes in Campaign for Her Heart. This theme actually
starts with the lead couple, Gwyneth Taylor and Noah Barrow. Gwen and Noah, who
are both in their fifties, first met in their twenties and are reunited more than 30
years later. They’d broken up in the past in part because they had opposing views
of social justice issues.
At the start of Campaign for Her Heart, Gwen
and Noah still have differing positions on some social justice issues. Although
their viewpoints are a lot closer than they used to be, Gwen is concerned that
falling for Noah would just be history repeating itself. She doesn’t want to
risk that, especially since there is even more at stake this time. Noah’s
challenge is convincing Gwen that he’s learned from the past. He’s not the same
person with whom Gwen had broken up.

Patricia, It's been our pleasure to support the Decades: A Journey of African American Romance. "Campaign for Her Heart" certainly is timely...I thought because we are in the midst of the Mid-term Elections here in the United States that maybe Gwen or Noah was running for a political office. Love that your lead couple are "mature." There's a lot to love about heroines and heroes who have a few miles on them.
Campaign For Her Heart is a great story that reflects what is happening today socially and politically. Kudos to Patricia Sargeant for this well-written story. The entire series is good!
