Christmas Movie Mix

While I don't get swept up in all the Christmas hype (no kids at home anymore and we're not particularly religious), I don't mind a good Christmas movie and the ones I like, I am happy to watch every year.

My favourites go right back to my childhood and now also include a 2019 new release (but you won't find Die Hard on my list - I'm definitely in the 'it's not a Christmas movie' camp).

When I think Christmas movies the first one that comes to mind is from way back when we first got a tv in the days when they were only 'black and white' and the one I remember most is 'Miracle on 34th Street'. The 1947 version with a very young Natalie Wood.

Long story short, Kris Kringle is taken to court to prove his assertion that he is Santa Claus.

I just loved this as a child and for me, it stands the test of time as a great movie.

Another one from my childhood is 'White Christmas' with Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. I was a massive Danny Kaye fan and who can resist Christmas shmaltz with that croony voice. Every year for a very long time (until records became a thing of the past) we'd eat Christams Eve dinner (European tradition) to Bing and his White Christmas album.

By the time I had my own family my taste had changed and even today I hope the Christmas tv season will bring 'National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation'. II just love disfunctional family movies and considering I'm not a huge comedy fan, this just cracks me up every time (and as I cat lover I still find the electrocuted kitty extremely amusing).  I think part of the appeal is that anyone's family looks good after watching the Griswalds.

It wouldn't be Christmas movies without 'Love Actually'. Again, this is a movie that divides opinion, but I'm on the 'love it' side. A bit silly, a bit poignant. A bit like Christmas.

And the suprise addition to my list is one that came out this year. I only went to see it because I had time to kill and it was the only movie on at the time. I was expecting it to be a yawn, or cliche or too soppy or silly - but it as just divine.

'Last Christmas' is now my favourite Christmas movie and I highly recommend it. It was so interesting watching The Mother Of Dragons (Emilia Clarke) doing such a brilliant job in a role that couldn't be more different to her GoT character. Loved it so much I took my bff to see it and enjoyed it just as much the second time around.

So, that's my list and it's a week before Christmas and I'm still waiting to see if any of my old favourites will turn up on the small screen!

Wishing everyone a happy and joyous Christmas season!

Andra, Thanks for reminding me about "Miracle on 34th Street" - I remember watching that over and over growing up. And you also mentioned "White Christmas" - so many people I know these days have never heard of the movie much less seen it. There are many blessings to have lived in the days of no television and the radio stations only playing Christmas music from sometime Christmas Ever throughout Christmas Day.

And scrolling down as I read your post, what a surprise as the cover of "Unwrapped" slowly appears. Not sure if you did that on purpose but it really was an 'unwrapping' of the cover of "Unwrapped"

I am in the love "Love Actually" category. Haven't seen "White Christmas" in years. "Miracle on 34th Street" I watch every year. Also will have to check out the new movie. Your book sounds like fun, so will be checking that out as well.

Hi Andra, I love Miracle on 34th Street, too. I'm dying to see "Last Christmas" but may have to wait for the small screen. SIGH

All great movies (haven't seen Last Christmas yet) to which I need to add two animated classics: How the Grinch Stole Christmas, and A Charlie Brown Christmas, both movies from my childhood that I eagerly anticipated every year.

Love Miracle on 34th Street and watch it every year. Also love It's a Wonderful Life. In fact hubby loves that so much he can practically recite all of the lines--which is sometimes really sweet and at other times maddening. :) I do like White Christmas though haven't watched it in quite some time.

I'm afraid I never really appreciated the funny things like Christmas Vacation or Home Alone which my DH thinks are hilarious.

When the kids used to come home from college, we would watch Charlie Brown Christmas and the Grinch because it held such memories for them. But the one they really favored, which I'd never seen before marrying Jim, is Emmet Otter and the Jug Band Christmas. It's not animated. It's with Jim Henson puppets--a sweet story of family, loss, poverty and what we give up to get a special gift for someone else. Get's me every time.

Merry Christmas, Andra.
