Christmas Decorating Traditions...by Kristin Wallace

Are your holiday decorations up yet? Are you one of those people who puts up a tree and lights right after Halloween? I don't know why, but just pulling everything out of the storage boxes is enough to warm your heart. Every piece evokes memories of your childhood or when your kids were little. They might make you think of your parents or grandparents.

We all have traditional decorations that must be set out every year. I now have two places to decorate...my apartment and my parents' house. My parents have all the ornaments and decorations that I grew up with. We collect the Hallmark dated ornaments, which started waaaaay back in 1976.

As you can imagine there are quite a lot of them at this point. There are also ornaments that my brother and I made, including a set of nativity characters.

My apartment is a little more eclectic as it's a mix of my things and those of my roommate.

Do you have special decorations that must be put up every year? Where did they come from and what do they remind you of?

Kristin, I keep the lights up all year long (inside and outside). No longer do I do a tree although in those storage bins I do have a collection of glass, fabric, wood and metal trees. Now that I live alone, the unpacking, setting up and than packing everything away was more than I could/can do so the joy of the season was lessened to the point that I'm changed. I love lights and candles and have them lit all year long. There are a couple of ornaments that never got packed away but the vast majority of them are or I've passed them on to my granddaughters.

I can still smell what it’s like opening those boxes. And I still have some hallmark ornaments from the 70’s too!! This year, were in flux with a move so everything is staying packed away, but we’ve got a Jar of Stars, a tangled set of star lights that we couldn’t get apart so we just shoved the whole thing in a cleaned Costco pickle jar. My girls and I have been plugging in each night and they are spectacular. We have their stockings out and every day I’ve been putting gonna different youtube ambience video with Christmas themes, crackling fireplaces and lovely music. Those YouTube vids are like decorating without having to clean up.

The last three years have been a time of downsizing and deciding what to keep and what to give up. DH and I have kept a few holiday decorations and given away the vast majority. This year we didn't get to the small tree decorating, but did put up a favorite Christmas wreath, made by one of my sisters, an ornament for each year of our marriage (20) that we've collected each year, and evergreen garlands festoon a table. We've vowed that next year we will find a way to do a short artificial tree (four feet or so) that can be easily put away.

Loved your pictures. Your home looks happy and filled with love. I'll also check out your holiday novella collection.
