Happy, happy holidays!!!

 by Diana McCollum

Happy Holidays! I love this season! The Christmas lights, music and goodies to eat. We bought a giant tree this year to go in our open beam living room. This will probably be the last year for a giant tree. All the family is coming on December 28th for our family get together and celebration.

I'm still undecided if I'm having a turkey this year or stick with tamales and mexican sides. We did the tamales the last couple years and I thought a change might be nice. Plus, I love turkey dinner leftovers.

I took all these pictures around our house. I enjoy decorating for Christmas, except climbing the ladder to decorate the tree. Hubby decorated the top 1/3 or the tree on a very tall ladder.

Enjoy the pictures and leave a comment about what you are serving for the holiday dinners.

And I'll leave you to enjoy our Christmas Cactus that are blooming profusely this year. Let me know what you are cooking for your Holiday Dinner this year.

Love and the Holidays - Writing Romances for the Holidays ... by Delsora Lowe

I love reading holiday books. And…I admit, I also love writing holiday books. The season is magical, especially when we have young children. Their eyes widen as they unwrap a present from Santa. They love decorating the tree and leaving out the milk and cookies on Christmas Eve. Sadly, my kids are grown, and not so sadly, they now have their own. But all three grandsons are beyond the age of pressing their noses against the window, scanning the sky for Santa.

This year, during my last-minute shopping for Thanksgiving, I came across the candy Advent calendar: a punch-out cardboard, holiday-scene, poster-sized box, where behind each door is a small piece of chocolate for each day in December. Every year I bought them for my young grandsons, one living in my state, and two living half-way across the country.  Until a few years ago, now that all three are in high school. This year, as I perused holiday candy at the grocery store, I spotted, the box sporting Santa. I ended up buying one for my fourteen-year-old grandson, despite knowing he was too old. But it made me feel good as a gramma. So, at Thanksgiving dinner, I prefaced that I had brought him a surprise—that I knew this present was for little kids, but still I couldn’t help buying it, since he loved them when he was little. I handed it to him, and the huge smile that came across his face was priceless. I got a big hug. So, moral, are any of us too old to still believe in the magic of Santa? I think not!

And for those who celebrate other holidays at this time of year, I love reading about the traditions in those holiday books, too. I would love book recommendations in the comments section!

All of the above are reasons why I love writing romantic holiday stories. I have memories of enchanted Christmas Eves as both a child and an adult. One such snowy scene I used in Snowbound Holiday, a book that I hope to release in 2024-25. I was visiting my daughter and her family in the Aspen area of Colorado. As we drove home, we found ourselves in the middle of a herd of Elk crossing the street, from one snow-covered field to another. We stopped so as not to hurt any elk or our car, as they soon wandered all around us. Under a full moon that glowed a soft light through tiny flakes of snow, and the shadowy outlines of elk, that to this easterner looked like reindeer, it was a real-life, magical scene I will never forget.

So, here’s to enjoying a good holiday romance.

Below I’ve featured the three holiday books I have written and released so far.

The Holiday Hitchhiker

Two strangers, one snow-worthy vehicle, and a cozy cabin in a blizzard

Cole Peters is ready to escape the bustle of the wildlife management symposium and the overpopulated conference complex in Reno, and get back to his solitary, mountain cabin in the state park.

What he didn’t plan was a road trip with a stranger, clad in the most unnatural, fluorescent colors, who hops into his truck. With a blizzard approaching, how can he say no to a “hijacker” in tears?

Addy Adams had a rough night. Fired, no place to escape to, and a missing car service, how can she get to her parents for Christmas before the blizzard shuts down the roads? Now stranded on a highway, in a white out, with an accident up ahead, did she trust the right man?

Can two strangers find friendship and more, while stuck in a log cabin with a sweet and welcoming couple and their two kids who are super excited about the arrival of Santa? And will Cole and Addy make their way to their respective homes in time for Christmas? Or will they realize they were meant to celebrate together during the magical season?

The Inn on Gooseneck Lane

Sixteen years later, that love lost, Nat returns home for a much-needed break. She's recruited to revitalize her aunt's picturesque inn. Will the boy who broke her heart be the man who rallies to save her home and capture her heart…for good?

Brad Matthews returns home to buy Green Mountain Sports, after years as an outdoor adventure guide. He's thrown into partnering an event to revive the town's inn and boost his business. Can he work with the woman who demolished his heart and ran with no explanation?

In a small town where everyone knows your business and interfering relatives revive snicker-doodling, the lost art of matchmaking, Nat and Brad may not stand a chance. Can the two find enough heart to forgive and accept love again?

 Come Dance With Me

Improvisational jazz musician meets buttoned up English teacher—will the Christmas lights sparkle or shatter before the dance ends?

Sam Johnson, a burned out, New York City iconic jazz pianist transplanted to small town Maine, finds himself and his muse again through a disparate group of committed teen musicians and their buttoned up, efficient, high school English teacher who is roped into advising the after-school jazz club.

Ashley Sullivan, an expert in classical music and teaching the bard, is out of her element when it comes to jazz or anything impromptu and desperately needs Sam’s help. What she doesn’t know is Sam has made it his mission before this gig ends to get Ashley to lighten up and enjoy the things in life she denies herself; music, friends, spontaneity, creativity, and yes, love.

When Sam works to rescue her from her childhood fears, Ashley runs the other direction. Can what is done out of love tear apart a relationship before it’s in full swing, or forever cement a love that is true?

Signals and signs ...

The number one signal for me (some might say warning) of the coming holiday season is fruitcake.  Not that dry, cakey stuff you get at the grocery store. The fruitcake I bake contains a kilogram of dried fruit (raisins, cranberries, cherries, blueberries, etc.), chopped nuts, a good amount of rum, and enough butter, eggs and flour to keep the whole thing together. I bake my cake at least a month early and feed the cake with more rum on a regular basis … to preserve the fruit, you understand.

If when you think of mincemeat, you’re picturing that horribly sweet glop from the grocery store, stop. Instead, conjure if you will a mixture of ground beef (yes, real meat, this stuff was invented to preserve sources of protein), apples, raisins, aromatic spices, and citrus peel all simmered to a velvety loveliness. My mum made this every year as did her mum and her mum.

Shortbread cookies. Buttery, vanilla-y, flaky. I pretend I can remember Grammy in the farmhouse kitchen, rolling out the dough on the old, scarred table, using star and bell-shaped cutters, then sliding the cookie sheets into the monster wood-fired oven. All us grandkids gathered around the table waited impatiently for the cookies to cool enough to eat. I have no memory of her baking shortbreads, but I have many memories of my mum doing so.

Hm … these all seem food related … wonder what that says about me …

A non-edible sign that the holidays are upon us is my annual hunt for greeting cards to send to friends and relations. I used to see what was on offer at the usual stores, but with the advent of online shopping, the sky’s the limit. I came across an artist a few years ago who creates the most wonderful images – right up my alley. AND she uses some of those images for greeting cards.

Nothing says festive season quite like holiday movies and books paired with a glass of eggnog – seasoned with more of that rum, can’t let it go to waste. Instant warm and cosy.

Luanna Stewart has been creating adventures for her imaginary friends since childhood. She spends her days writing many flavours of romance. When not torturing her characters, she’s in her kitchen baking something delicious. She lives in Nova Scotia with her patient husband and two hens.

What to do with this old jacket?

My husband and I like to spend time going through thrift shops. We have found some spectacular deals, and have bought some things that turn out to be duds.

My husband likes to barter with the people, and in thrift shops you can sometimes get the cost down by quite a bit, especially if the item has sat in the store for a long period of time.

Here in Paradise there's Snoop Sisters Thrift shop, Jeanie's Thrift shop, and five more Antique and thrift shops. So as you can imagine we can spend a whole morning or afternoon just browsing!

This post is about Jeanie's Thrift shop.  Last weekend we browsed through the shop. There is a table with a local farmers produce already bagged up and ready to be bought. That was our first item. A bag of mixed fresh fruit, nectarines, peaches, plums (two kinds).

After looking through the store I found the item I wanted.

The Department 56 ornament box caught my eye. If you are a collector you know these items are very spendy brand new.

I excitedly opened the box.

There inside was the sweetest jeweled dashound Angel! The top opens up to a little jewel box with a silver colored heart.

And it was marked $12.50. I couldn't believe the price for such a precious dashound.

When we got home I looked up on e-bay to see how collectable this little dashound was, and low and behold he is selling for $75.00!!

I won't be selling him as he will be a Christmas present for someone.

So best shopping trip ever! I got quite the deal. And I know the person who is getting this dashound for Christmas will be thrilled!

Forgive me, for some reason I've messed up the settings and my typing starts in the middle of the page.

The worst thrift shop buy was on the same day at a different thrift shop. My husband bartered with the lady for a reel and old fishing pole. She knocked $10 off the price and he bought both. When we got home he realized the fishing pole was unfixable. Therefore, he never got a deal at all.

Now to address the title of my blog "What to do with this old jacket?".

I never knew this till I read it in one of the newsletters I receive, there are thrift shops online. One called Thredup you can shop on that site, but you can also send a box of clothes, purses etc (no household goods) free of charge and they list the clothes and sell them. They keep a percentage and you are mailed a check when your items sell. It doesn't cost you a thing except time to sort through your clothes. If they can't sell the clothes you can pay to have them sent back to you or they will donate or recycle in some other way.

What a great way to keep clothing out of the landfills. The other ones you can sell on yourself are e-bay and Etsy . Donate those old clothes or recycle or get a little cash for them, it's up to you. Please don't throw in the garage as our landfills don't need them!!

Have you ever sold anything online?

Christmas in July by Marie Harte

He wouldn’t explain himself to this sexy, stuck-up viper. Wait. Where had
sexy come from? Rebecca Bragg was more girl-next-door…with a side of sexy. Damn her full mouth.

I’m a sucker for a good Christmas romance, but I typically like to see some snow on the ground before I indulge. Except this summer I’ve been feeling kind of Christmas-y. Not sure why. Perhaps it’s for a respite from the high temperatures? The call back to family togetherness (my youngest is away at boot camp and already gone from the nest)? In any case, I’m happy to share some Christmas fun, love, and a few happy tears.

So, if you’re in the mood for—an ex pro football player, a widow, her teenage son, mischievous teen matchmakers, and a holiday to remember—then check out my feel-good, sexy Christmas romance, Any Given Snow Day.

Ex-NFL star + snarky single mom =
a touchdown of a holiday romance

After two Super Bowl rings, MVP status, and retiring from the NFL while still on top, Mitch “Flash” Flashman’s millions should make life at the ripe old age of thirty-five a blessing. Yet he’s restless, rudderless, and can’t tell up from down. Roped into helping his brother coach a bunch of teenagers, Mitch finds himself playing defense against the many women in town wanting his attention.

Except for one particular woman who doesn’t seem to like him much.

Becca Bragg is mouthy, vulnerable, and sexy, and she captivates Mitch despite himself. But Mitch has no time for a sexy single mom when he’s still trying to figure out who he really is. With the playoffs, a boy’s future, and his own heart on the line, he’ll need to figure out how to pull the ultimate victory—winning Becca’s heart and keeping it. For good.

Excerpt

Mitch was cold, hungry, and had a headache growing at the thought of the many people outside who would want to talk to him. He knew it came with the territory, but man, he’d love to just be average Mitch Flashman again. A simple guy who wanted nothing more than a cold beer and a plate of warm nachos to end the week.

Davey Madison popped his head around the lockers. “Hey, Coach? My mom wants to talk to you.”

Mitch contained a groan. “I’ll be out in a few minutes. I’ll meet her by the concession stand, okay?”

Davey nodded and left.

Mitch rubbed his face, suddenly bone-tired.

“She just wants in your pants.”

He spun to see Simon smirking at him.

“Mrs. Madison. She’s got a thing for you, like half the other moms out there.” Simon shoved his hands in his pockets, a tall kid swimming in a man’s coat a few sizes too large for his build. His light-brown hair needed a cut but seemed to fit the typical teenage style of too long and too shaggy. “Apparently you’re rich and handsome. I think I heard one of them call you sexy too.”

Mitch tried to play it off, though he felt his cheeks heating. Damn. Nothing like being a celebrity who hated the limelight and blushed too easily. Oh yeah, I’m macho and manly, alright. “Yep, that’s me. Sexy and handsome.”

“And rich, don’t forget that.” Simon grinned. The kid seemed to be enjoying Mitch’s discomfort.

Nothing like being wanted for your money. “Not your mom, though?”

Simon chuckled, his hazel eyes sparkling. “Nah, my mom thinks you’re an ass. ‘Night, Coach.” He left with a spring in his step.

Behind him, Deacon guffawed. “I do like that kid.”

“You would.” He walked slowly out of the locker room with his brother. “So what did you think?”

“About your crappy speech, the game, or the fact that we’re about to be mobbed by women who want in your pants?”

“Sometimes I really hate you. You know that?”

“Yep, little brother. I do.” Deacon put him in a headlock and dragged him out the door. “But hey, I did my time. You’re the new celebrity on the block. Roll with it.”

Mitch got free. “So was I too harsh on the kids? It’s only my third game helping out.”

“And I’m glad you are. Stan’s flu couldn’t have come at a worse time. The pub has me running ragged, what with that distributor problem and Roy out of town.” He groaned. “What a sucky time for his wife to go into labor.”

Mitch shook his head. “Such compassion for your best friend.”

Deacon laughed. “Right? I’m kidding. I wish Jess would have had the baby here though. Nope. Had to be down in Houston with her folks. She’s robbing me of my business partner!”

“What was she thinking?”

Roy had what they both wanted—a great job, a loving wife, and now a new baby. Deacon, like Mitch, had played pro ball. He’d had seven amazing years as a starring quarterback before he’d blown out his right shoulder to the point he couldn’t throw with the speed and accuracy he’d once had. A brutal divorce had stolen even more happiness, until Deacon had nearly quit everything—football, family, breathing…

Mitch had tried to help his brother, but he knew seeing him only reminded Deacon of all he’d lost. Their parents hadn’t known what to do either.

But good old Roy, Deacon’s best friend before, during, and after the NFL, had thrown Deacon a lifeline. Now Deacon was a partner in a thriving brewpub, head coach for a high school football team in a dream of a town, and had recently even dipped his toe back into the dating game.

“You know, all these women aren’t just here for me,” Mitch told him. “You’re fair game, from what I hear.”

“Ah, but I’m damaged goods.” Funny, Deacon didn’t seem too upset over the fact. “You’re rich and retired. Money, fame, fortune. You, little bro, have it all.”

“What I’ve got is a headache,” he grumbled as they passed many well-wishers. Parents from both teams shook his hand and made small talk, everyone wanting to touch the man who’d once been an MVP in the NFL. As if touching him would guarantee their kid’s own success. At least they bugged Deacon too. That made him feel a little better.

Mitch kept it together as they drew closer to the concession stand, encountering a rare moment of peace from the dispersing crowd. “God, kill me know. Deacon, don’t even think of leaving me to deal with her by myself.” He grabbed his brother by the sleeve and held on for dear life, having spotted Linda Madison’s flailing hands and bright smile.

Deacon didn’t try to hide his grin. “Mrs. Future Flash is waiting for you.”

Mitch shot him the death glare.

“Look, I’ll do my best to block for you,” Deacon conceded. “But you’d have an easier time saying no if you actually said no.”

“I did.” Mitch groaned. “The woman is like a pit bull, and her friends are just as bad. I tried to tell them I’m not interested. Yes, them, because all of them have made some not-so-subtle moves. It’s not funny,” he snapped.

Deacon continued to laugh.

“Hey, it’s not as if I’m out screwing half the town. I don’t want to date some pushy yokel so she can tweet about having landed the ‘Amazing Flash.’” He grimaced. “I have standards.”

“And so do we,” a husky voice muttered from behind him. “Come on, Simon. Let’s get away from God’s gift to women before I accidentally throw myself at him. I suddenly feel nauseous.”

He turned to see Simon grinning widely before the kid hurried to accompany two pretty, dark-haired women away. Mitch couldn’t be sure which one had insulted him, but tired, he couldn’t bring himself to care.

“Wow. You really do come across as a huge ass,” Deacon said. “Simon’s mom is right.”

“Up yours.”

“Huge.” Deacon dragged him faster toward the gaggle of women standing with Linda and Davey. “Hey, Linda. Look who I have with me? Flash wants to talk to you.”

Should totally have drowned him in third grade when I had the chance.
