Reading Outside The Square

By Cassandra O'Leary
A couple of months ago I found myself in a reading rut. I had plenty of ebooks to read on my Kindle app, paperbacks I bought ages ago taking up space on my to be read pile, but nothing appealed to me. This was not cool. I'm a big reader...normally I love it for relaxation and enjoyment. But nothing was tickling my proverbial fancy.

As a contemporary romance and romantic comedy author, I'd found myself buying books in those genres almost automatically. I was reading them with a critical eye, working out whether I liked the balance of humour and more subtle character elements, whether the plot was interesting or how they snuck up on me with twists or surprises. Long story short, I was reading with the analytical mind of a writer and it was hurting my head.

I set myself a vague goal of reading some different books, outside my usual sub-genres. Guess what? I found some gems that not only impressed me from a writerly standpoint, but drew me into the story world unlike some of my other recent reads. I think the difference is the step back from my own work. Sometimes it's good to reinvigorate your love of reading just for the love of it.

Here's a short list of some of those books I've enjoyed most.

1. Psy Changling series by Nalini Singh

I'm currently reading Kiss of Snow, book 10 in this expansive paranormal romance/fantasy/sci fi series. So many people had recommended these books to me, knowing that I'm a Star Trek and science fiction fan from way back when. They were right! I should listen to my clever bookish friends.

I love the complexity of the world building in this series, with its contingent of alpha heroes from werewolf and leopard characters, strong heroines and an undercurrent of impending war. The strangely Silent Psy race who have contained their emotions and live almost entirely online, is an interesting take on our society's current reliance on technology. It's also a super sexy series filled with sexual tension...if you like that sort of thing. Hint: I do!

2. A Court of Thorns and Roses series by Sarah J Maas

This is an addictive new adult fantasy series with mythological and romantic elements. Powerful fae and demons rule a number of kingdoms, and our heroine (a human who later becomes immortal after she dies and is resurrected) must navigate a complex political landscape of rival courts.

This series sucked me right in, and I did not expect the changes the heroine brought about in her world through her actions in choosing, then leaving, a fairy mate. She's strong and relentless, weilds a sword and isn't afraid of monsters. Or if she is afraid, she goes out there and deals with them anyway. Now I'm about to start reading Maas's other series, Throne of Glass. I can't wait!

3. The Merridew Sisters series by Anne Gracie

This series is pure Regency fun, with a light touch of humour that I thoroughly enjoyed. Anne is an Aussie author I've had the pleasure of learning from, as I've attended a couple of her writing seminars. I just knew I would adore her books, from the moment I heard her speak about imbuing characters with depth, humour and heart but not forgetting to show their faults and flaws.

I started with The Perfect Rake, the first book in the series, and it's now a firm favourite. Highly recommended read for all the historical fans, or anyone who likes a well constructed story with a dishy hero.

Anyway, I hope I've inspired others to read outside their usual box and grab a good read that sings in a completely different key.

Lost in Which Genre?

Diana McCollum-- Life is often chaotic in our home, but when I have a few hours of uninterrupted writing time, I use it, as it is a precious commodity.

A lifetime avid reader, I enjoy creating worlds where anything is possible. I can’t help but include an element of the paranormal in my stories, and always a happily-ever-after.

For me there are different levels of being ‘lost in a book’.

I read a lot of different genres. Straight romance, Regency’s in particular, I find highly entertaining. However, they are books I can read a chapter and put the book aside. I tend to read these types of stories in the evening, in bed. I’m “lost in the story” enough to enjoy, but not enough to keep me awake.

Paranormal, Romance and Suspense author Nora Roberts’ story lines are fast paced, cover tough topics and are good, because of that I do have a hard time stopping at just one chapter. If I sit with one of her books, I’ll be ‘lost in the book’ and reading for a couple of hours. Her stories come alive, and I have to find out what happens.

For me most romances and some romantic suspense books are ‘slow paced’. When they are not fast paced I tend to get bored, and can easily put the book aside for a day or two. I usually read this type when I take a break from household tasks.

I don’t know if it is because I’m a mature reader now, but I seem to be pickier about what I spend my time reading.

Now a good thriller, like the one I’m reading right now by Harlan Coben, “Missing You”, will keep me reading straight through to the end. With three interlacing plot lines and fast pacing I’m intrigued to the very end. No reading one chapter at a time with his book!

I know this probably seems strange to enjoy thrillers most of all when I write paranormal romance! Hey, each to his own choices. That’s what entertains me!!

Do you read certain books during the day, night or. .?

If you haven’t read my book “The Witch with the Trident Tattoo”, leave a comment and you could win a free e-book copy.

Past Entertainments

I love the Regency period and the activities the peerage indulged in. In particular, for men, the hunting season was eagerly anticipated. The traditional end of the London Season was considered the Glorious Twelfth of August, which marks the beginning of the shooting season. Society would retire to the country to shoot birds during the autumn and hunt foxes during the winter, before coming back to London again with the spring.

It’s pretty obvious that to chase foxes, and hunt game of any kind, you had to have a large country estate, hence why hunting was a sport for the wealthy. Those who did not have the means to own such large estates, were ever hopeful to be invited to join a shooting party at a wealthy man’s hunting lodge. Remember, hunting on someone else’s land was considered poaching (theft), and the penalties for such activities were severe, sometimes resulting in deportation or even hanging.

Just the name ‘hunting lodge’ sets a vivid picture in my mind of cool autumn days, big log fires and men playing billiards after dinner. For the bastion of gentry, a hunting lodge was seen as a necessity. What else were you to do with your time when the London social season finished? They had to have something to do with their time.

In my soon to be released on 16 August, A TASTE OF SEDUCTION (book #5 in my Disgraced Lords series), my hero, Lord Hadley Fullerton, owns a hunting lodge in Surrey. As the second son of the Duke of Claymore, Hadley was left Lathero by his grandfather. However, he used part of the large estate to grow grapes and make sparkling wine. Why? Because he needed an escape from life when the love of his life married another, breaking his heart.

I have based Hadley’s home on Cranborne Manner, in Dorset, Southern England. The Manor is the home of Viscount Cranborne, the eldest son of the 7th Marquess of Salisbury. Isn’t it lovely. It really sparked my imagination as to what it must be like to sit in the drawing room with a brandy in hand and a roaring fire in the grate against the cold.

The original Manor house was built as a royal hunting lodge for King John in the 12th century. Cranborne Chase was a royal hunting ground from at least the time of William the Conqueror until the 17th century.

In 1604 the Manor and its surrounding land was acquired by Robert Cecil, 1st Earl of
Salisbury and Chief Minister to Queen Elizabeth I and James II. Under the 2nd Earl, in 1647, the west wing was remodelled by Captain Ryder, an associate of Inigo Jones. At the beginning of the 17th century the garden was laid out by Mounten Jennings and John Tradescant who supplied many of the original plants.

The estate consists of a 3,000 acre in hand farm and over 1,700 acres of woods, as well as the park and gardens.

Hadley has used many acres to grow his grapes and after five years has begun to produce very good wines. The duty on French brandy and wines during the Napoleonic wars and shortly after, also saw the rise in sparkling wine produced in England.

One of the first men to plant commercial vines in the UK was the Honorable Charles Hamilton, the 9th and youngest son of the Earl of Abercorn. As you can see, younger son’s had to make a living.
Charles created Painshill Place in Cobham, Surrey in 1738. Painshill is now run by a trust and you can still visit to see the wonderful gardens and follies he created. Included in the gardens were an Abby, a Roman temple, a Turkish tent, a Temple of Bacchus, a fantastic shell-filled grotto, a hermitage, and some Roman steps. The picture below is the vines planted near the Abby. By the late 18th century, Painshill was selling 6 variety of wines for 60 guineas a barrel (equivalent of 7,500 pounds in today’s terms). Highly profitable for it’s day.

The production of wine in England was, and still is fraught, with problems given the unpredictability of the weather. Hadley was a brave, if not a tad desperate man to try, but as he’s my hero and I love him, he does succeed—both in love and in viticulture.

A TASTE OF SEDUCTION releases 16th August (available for pre-order) and is a reunion or second chances story.

The flames of desire fuel a torrid reunion as bestselling author Bronwen Evans returns with another captivating novel of the Disgraced Lords. See why Jen McLaughlin raves, “Bronwen’s historical romances always make the top of my reading list!”

Lady Evangeline Stuart chose to wed a tyrant with a title, or so society believes. That was five years ago—five long years that she could have spent with her first and only love: Lord Hadley Fullerton, the second son of the Duke of Claymore. Now Evangeline is a widow, and her soul cries out for Hadley. But when they see each other at last, everything has changed. The passion in his eyes has been corrupted by betrayal. Somehow Evangeline must regain Hadley’s trust—without revealing the secret that would spoil the seduction.

Hadley is determined not to be distracted by Evangeline. He and the other Libertine Scholars are in pursuit of an enemy who has been striking at them from the shadows, and Evangeline’s mere presence could be dangerous. But with one smile, one touch, one taste of Evangeline’s lips, Hadley’s resolve is overpowered by far more pleasant memories. As the two enter into a discreet affair, Hadley vows to give her his body, never his heart. That, she will have to earn.

Here’s a snippet:

The doors to the garden were closed, so it wasn’t the roses that attracted her immediate attention. Instead she found her eyes drawn to a massive portrait hanging above the large fireplace. The painting was exquisite. You could almost see the willow’s branches waving in the breeze. The woman sitting under the tree was her, yet wasn’t her.

Evangeline had not seen this painting before, so it must have been painted after she had been abducted. The other clue was the way Hadley had portrayed her. She looked quite beautiful, her hair falling in waves around her bare shoulders, her profile exquisite, until you looked closer. Her eyes were cold and hard, her smile pure evil. The coldness and artifice made this woman, the woman who looked exactly like her, a stranger.

Evangeline drew in a deep breath. Someone in pain had painted the image; it was obvious in every stroke of the brush. He’d been so hurt, surely as hurt as she had been. She had to keep remembering that she wasn’t the only victim.

Torbet came to stand beside her as she gazed at the painting.

“He painted for months after you left. I think expressing his bitterness and hurt on canvas was cathartic for him. Unfortunately, as soon as he finished this he never painted again.”

“That is indeed a shame. He loved painting, and he was very good.”

Torbet nodded. “Perhaps now that you have returned he’ll start painting again.”

She looked once more at the portrait before her. “I hope so.” And she truly did. Painting had always soothed Hadley and filled his life. Torbet was the one who had seen his talent and nurtured it.
Taking leave of the butler, she made her way through the rose gardens, down past their special willow tree, and out the back gate to the small hilly fields behind the stable, where the land sloped down toward a stream.

She put her hand up to shield her eyes from the sun and drank in the beauty of the vineyard in front of her. She noted a few men working among the vines, yet only one man drew her eye . . . the man who stood in the middle of the farthest row, bent over working.

His coat was off, he wore no waistcoat, and his shirtsleeves were rolled up, revealing tanned arms. If not for the cut of his trousers and the innate presence about his person, he could have simply been another farm laborer.

As she watched, one of the men called to Hadley, indicating he was not doing something correctly. Hadley made his way to the worker’s side, allowing him to demonstrate—it looked like they were tying the vines to twine hung between the posts.

He didn’t notice her arrival, and she moved under one of the many willows lining the stream, into the deep shadows of the overhanging branches. The shade cooled the heat she felt at the knowledge that tonight she would be in the embrace of those strong tanned arms once again.

The men patiently showed Hadley how to prune the vines and tie them down. He worked alongside them, and when they handed him the pail of water, he drank from the ladle with the rest of them.
This was what she had always admired and loved about Hadley.

He was the son of a duke, yet he treated everyone with equal politeness, grace, and importance. No doubt his upbringing, watching his father behave worse than the lowest cad and brute, was at the heart of his ability to cross the barriers of the class system. He had always had an affinity for those less fortunate. That was probably why, when they’d met, he hadn’t minded that her family was poor, even though a second son, especially a second son of a duke, usually looked for a financially advantageous match.

She now understood how much he must have loved her to be willing to run away to Gretna Green. Did he love her still?

I hope you enjoy A Taste of Seduction because I loved writing Hadley’s story. Check out the reviews on Goodreads….

Building a Romance Bundle

by M.L. Buchman

I had a very exciting opportunity recently, I got to curate my first book bundle. I thought I'd talk about the experience.

Book Bundles are hot! They are cropping up everywhere. I have one myself of my three holiday Night Stalkers short novels: Night Stalkers Holiday Bundle. They're hitting the New York Times lists. (not mine yet, but others certainly are.)

It can be a way to entice readers with a reduced price like my NS Bundle. Or it can be a loss leader for a group of authors at a very low risk price. This of course means that it is most effective when you have a number of other books that can benefit from acquiring new readers. This bundle is a loss leader. It isn't about making money, it's about getting our stories out to new readers who will be interested in our other works.

I've had the pleasure of participating in a Christmas romance bundle last fall at Storybundle.com. It was a great experience, but I wanted to do something new and different this time. So, rather than starting with a theme, I started with some of my very favorite romance storytellers and then tried to think about how I could tie them together.

Surprisingly, or maybe not surprisingly with such a great collection of writers, the idea came together fairly quickly: "Romance: Past, Present & Paranormal." As soon as I had the idea put together, I approached Jason the owner of Storybundle. He has created a very interesting site.

It allows:
  • the reader to set the price. Above a certain minimum ($3 for this bundle), they receive the main set of books. Above  $10 they receive the bonus books as well at a cost of about a dollar each.
  • the reader can then directly receive the e-books downloaded in MOBI (Kindle) or EPUB (almost everyone else on the planet) formats.
Jason was thrilled at the idea. So, I approached the authors I had chosen. And received equally enthusiastic, YESs. (YESes?)

We put together a marketing campaign, because one of the real keys to a book bundle's success is the overlapping of networking methods and approaches. One commands a power blog, another a street team, another works listservs (loops, whatever you want to call them). We each bring our network to the bundle and hopefully find new audiences with our powerful storytelling.

I can't begin to tell you how excited I am by the final line-up we were able to put together. Some of these authors you will probably know, others you'd know their books if not their names (they'd be hard to miss with over a hundred titles out), and still others you may never have heard of.

Let me just say that these authors are all ones that I don't read just one book of, I read many.

Available from Storybundle.com April 30th to May 21st. So, be sure to save this post and grab these wonderful books as soon as you can!

Debut SFR Author J.C. Hay - Twisting Genres Up: Space Opera Adventure and Regency Flair

Space Regency is here, and somehow, I’ve helped. In the wake of a conversation at RWA Nationals a few years back, I was inspired to write a novel that pulled together the things I loved most about Space Opera and Regency Romance. That mélange, for me, grew into my debut novel, His Lowborn Heart; a cross-breeding of Regency flair with a Space Opera setting.

HIS LOWBORN HEART
Like any great Romantic Couple, at first glance these two have nothing in common. Space Opera is about wildly futuristic technology; aliens, spaceships, and laser-swords. Regency is grounded in history, in stories of and about the Ton, and those who are impacted by them. And just like any great couple, the more time they spend together, the more you realize just how much they have in common. How right for each other they really are.

Space Opera has a long tradition of galactic nobility, filled with counts, dukes, princesses, and emperors of all stripes. Almost from its conception, Regency has featured strong women either quietly or overtly breaking the boundaries of their society. They cross-pollinate and compliment. If left together too long, they melt into each other until it’s hard to see the pieces as separate.
And like any great couple, they hope to create something new that transforms how we see the individual parts.

In His Lowborn Heart, I made an effort to parallel some of the obliviousness of the Ton to what was happening in the fields of Spain and Portugal as Napoleon advanced. The war is a game for the wealthy, while those without means struggle and die unseen on the front. (I even made the aliens a society of equals – similar to the ideas of the Revolution which Napoleon claimed to further.)

The end result gave me a world where a lowborn fighter pilot and a duke’s headstrong daughter can find love while they struggle against both the strictures of society and their human and alien adversaries. Hopefully, other people find it as fun to read as it was to write.

Goodbye 2013 - Welcome 2014

What’s in a year?

A lot I hope!

I saw the New Year in on Tuesday night with a group of friends. We went out for dinner. Of course the big topic around the table was New Year resolutions.

I’m starting a new stage in my life this year. I’ve moved cities, I’m living in an area of NZ I’ve never lived before, and I’ve been blessed to be able to build a new house in a dream location, set in vineyards, overlooking the sea. So I’m feeling pretty contented.

I’m usually a very goal orientated person so it was quite interesting that I decided I didn’t want to ruin my contentment with things like must do, have to, etc

However, I did decide that I WANTED to write more and eat less. That’s the limit to the goals I’ve set myself this year.

The writing more is because I have so many stories in my head at the moment that it’s getting crowded, and because I have a few books under contract. I have three books to write by July this year – busy!!!!

Plus I have three books being released by June this year, A Kiss of Lies coming January 14th, Invitation to Passion in late March, and A Promise of More in April.

It’s going to be a busy year, but I’m looking forward to the challenge.

I hope whatever resolutions you’ve made help you with your dreams for the year but don’t stress you out. After all, if I’m healthy and happy, as are my friends and family, I know the year will be okay.

Take care and I hope you all have a wonderful 2014!

A Kiss of Lies – January 14 2014

Desperate to escape her abusive past, Sarah Cooper disguises herself as a governess in the employ of Christian Trent, Earl of Markham, the man who, long ago, she fantasized about marrying. Despite the battle scars that mar his face, Sarah finds being near Christian rekindles her infatuation. A governess, however, has no business in the arms of an earl, and as she accompanies Christian on his voyage home, Sarah must resist her intense desires—or risk revealing her dangerous secrets.
One of the renowned Libertine Scholars, Christian Trent once enjoyed the company of any woman he chose. But that was before the horrors of Waterloo, his wrongful conviction of a hideous crime, and his forcible removal from England. Far from home and the resources he once had, Christian believes the life he knew--and any chance of happiness--is over ... until his ward’s governess sparks his heart back to life, and makes him remember the man he used to be. Now Christian is determined to return to England, regain his honor, and win the heart of the woman he has come to love.

“A Kiss of Lies is one of those books that made me laugh and cry. In its sensual and tender moments, it brought tears to my eyes, and the witty banter between characters made me smile again and again. No one writes wounded characters who are healed by the power of love like Bronwen Evans. This is a book sure to touch your heart.”—Bestselling author Shana Galen
