Why I Love Fall …and the Change of Season ... by Delsora Lowe

Changes happen every day. Some we embrace and some we don’t. Those we don’t embrace take a lot of energy to deal with. So, finding and celebrating changes we love is good for the heart and soul.

To me and so many others, fall is the season that most represents change. In a way fall always seems like the New Year. Probably because it is the start of a new year in school.

My morning walk view of the school and it's playground through the fence

Yes, I’m old enough to have been out of school for MANY years. But as an adult I returned to college to finally finish my degree when I was thirty-six and my kids were still in school. I worked at a college as a fraternity chef, so my work schedule coordinated with the college schedule. It was the best of all worlds to have summer and school vacations off with my children.

An evening walk as the shadows from the setting sun play with the rising moon to the left and the glowing street lights

Another one of my careers was working in the development office as the alumni director for two independent, secondary schools and one college. So, for fifteen years, I again followed the schedule of schools, although I did have to work through the summer. But working summer had a different vibe and was more relaxed than during the school year.

Another change associated with fall are the changing colors. I do love my spring and summer flowers. And winter white has a magical quality to it, but fall is my favorite. The bright colors of changing leaves and fall flowers and the invigorating air is a balm to me. The later we go into fall, the darker, vivid blue of the sky and the intensity of stars on a clear night are magical. Even the dying, stark stalks that once carried vivid flowers, have a certain beauty of their own.

Fall color overlooking the ocean

Of course, a very special day in my life is my birthday—I’m a September baby. My son was born in October and my daughter in November. So yes, fall once again is a special time for celebrations. To me, fall is my favorite time of year for weddings. No, I did not get married in the fall. But I love the idea of fall weddings and fall romance. So, I have written several books that take place in the fall—one with a fall wedding and two with fall proposals.

No, I'm not one - but it was a pretty cake - love purple!

What is your favorite kind of change?

A fall wedding is the catalyst for rekindling love for two who's love was lost

Love the pictures, especially the one of the ocean through the fall trees. Oh, and the closeup of the bee and the Farmer's Market. What I like about fall now is the heat of summer should be gone. Of course today we'll hit 80+ but that is better than 90 or 100+ like so many of the summer day temperatures were.

Judith- thanks for stopping by. Today, in the NE, it is a perfect fall day. Only, here it is - late September and no leaves changed yet. I heard with the drought and prolonged heat this summer, we would not get a spectacular fall this year. Luckily I had photos from last fall. Stay cool and may FALL fall upon you soon!

My favorite kind of change is change for the better, of course! Seriously though, I like the changes from summer to fall and winter to spring. Your books look and sound inviting.

Thanks, Sarah - I think adding any season to a book acts as another character in the book. It helps create a mood around the season that adds to the character's story.

You've painted a lovely picture with both your photos and your words. Autumn is my favourite season as well, and for most of the reasons you mentioned. I, too, am a September baby, as is my brother and my youngest son. The sun lower in the sky illuminates things differently, the air is crisp and clear, and nature is slowing down, ready for a rest. I'm ready to dig out my corduroy trousers and wool sweaters, mix up a pot of hot cocoa, and snuggle next to the wood stove!

Ahhh, you too, Luanna, paint a lovely picture. I wish I had a woodstove or fireplace - one of the things I miss most at this time of year. YAY for September babies :-)

Love the pics and the post. Change is good, provided we are moving forward into positivity and away from any lingering negativity. I like all the seasons, since I lived in tropical climates for far too long, but fall is definitely my favorite.

Count me in Fall as my favorite time as well. I loved your pics and do envy your NE living when Fall comes. Even though this year may not produce as many colors, I'm betting is still spectacular in comparison to those who don't get that much change in leaves with primarily evergreens.

Certainly Fall birthdays are in your natural seasonal timings with two children and yourself in the Fall. No wonder it is a favorite time of year. I love the Parkers Point Fall cover. It would be enough to make me buy the book.

Definitely the change of colors which I took for granted while I lived back East.

Dari - I think that is why I like Fall so much - it signals real change for me - like a new start. So Fall always invigorates me in a positive way. Don't get me wrong, I do love the NE because we have the change of seasons (4 different times a year :-).) But Fall causes the most monumental change in me.

Maggie - I just returned from a walk and noticed still no hint of red, yellow, orange or brown in the leaves. Very weird this year. While I was looking at eh neighbors trees, I noticed purple blossoms on the rhododendron bush - they usually bloom in May. Now that's the kind of change I hate to see as we watch our planet's weather change and cause havoc.

Thanks - on the book cover for the Legacy of Parkers Point. That is a new cover, as it better matches the feel of books 2 & 3. When I wrote that first book, I never imagined writing two more in the series. But other characters called to me :-)

Anna - it always amazes me the different shades of any color when you move from the NE to other areas of the country. The greens and browns have different tones, as do the other colors. But each area of the country has its own magical moments in color and feel. Glad you could pop in today!
