What's New in 2022 - Author/Writer Education

You may have noticed that Romancing The Genres has had the same December Guest Theme for several years. We've been grateful for the expertise of Debbie Young, ALLi; Maggie Lynch, POV Author Services and Matt Buchman, author, for consistently providing our readers with quality content.

You may also have noticed that December has more than three weekends! And that has meant finding another guest blogger or two. This year we decided to add Author/Writer Education for our open spot. And, it is a theme we can go with every year as there are so many Top Quality Author's who are also Excellent Instructors.

This year we're featuring POV Author Services instructors Maggie Lynch and Jody Wallace.

And be sure to let us know in the Comment Section about your favorite instructor so we can include them next year.

Maggie Lynch has been teaching business and technical courses for career-minded authors for nearly 15 years. Most of them were through in-person workshops. For a few years she did offer several courses as self-paced video. However, an analysis of completion rates worried her. People would pay for the course but often abandon it well before finishing. The feedback she received was that they needed the ability to ask questions and didn’t have that in video-based courses. So, she decided to return to in-person workshops. The difference is she runs them via Zoom so authors in multiple time zones could attend. For the past two years she has been teaching live-instruction, small classes (limited to 7 participants) via Zoom over several weeks. They have been well-received. She’s enjoyed the in-person teaching and coaching, and the participants have stayed for the entire class.

A number of students have asked for craft classes taught in this same manner, but Maggie felt uncomfortable teaching craft classes as she’s never had the educational background for creative writing instruction. So, in 2022, she found a great person to join POV Author Services as an instructor specifically for Craft classes. Her name is Jody Wallace. She is an author of over 30 books and has an MFA in Creative Writing, and has taught English and Writing classes at both the high school and college level. Best of all she has a great sense of humor and makes the hard work of writing fun.

Below is the 2022 schedule of POV Author Services courses. The links for each course go to the course product page where you can learn more about the course, the topics that are taught, and purchase a seat in the course if you like. As classes are limited to seven students, you may want to consider planning for the entire year. IF we get overwhelming need for a particular course, we will consider adding a second section.

Thank you to RTG for highlighting our courses. I am really excited about the addition of Jody Wallace and the craft courses. I know that many writers--both new to writing books and those who may have published, or are trying to get an agent, want these classes. There is so much I learned about writing because I took classes from some writers with lots of books already published. And there were a lot of things I learned along the way because no one bothered to tell me the basics. They assumed I knew them.

I hope everyone picks up class or two--even if it's not these classes. It is important to continue to learn new things and to apply them to our writing and careers. Happy 2022 everyone!

Those classes sound cool!

My favorite writing/publishing educator team is Damon Suede and Your A-Game. I also enjoy the Manuscript Academy, and the virtual classes that RWA chapters offer.

I've learned a ton in Maggie's classes and also value the classes and workshops I've taken from Laurie Schnebley Campbell, Mary Buckham and Margie Lawson. I did the Damon Suede Master Class, Verbalize, before an Emerald City Conference several years ago. Looking forward to learning from Jody...now to go sign up!!!

Hi, Maggie and Jody!
Having taken some of Maggie's previous classes along with Jody I can vouch as to Jody's sense of humor and how informative the classes were. Maggie goes above and beyond in answering questions, even questions that didn't necessarily pertain to the class, but did pertain to writing.
I have signed up for one class so far. I did have a question: classes that are in the future would I have to pay now or when it gets closer to the actual class? Thanks!

I have taken classes from all mentioned above. I am looking forward to signing up for one of Maggie's class - especially interested in newsletter production and SEO - even though I have taken time-limited workshops in those topics, I know Maggie gives a more in-depth look at topics over a period of time. I'll search my workshop folders and send some names along of those that were particularly useful.
