Each year up to now I’ve made resolutions. I’ve written them down, reviewed them weekly and by the end of February most have gone by the wayside.
This year I’ve made up a motto which is tacked to my bulletin board by my desk.
“Try something new monthly, work on goal list weekly, smile and be happy”.
My goals list is for writing and personal goals. Those lists are also on my bulletin board.
I am really looking forward to trying something new each month. This month I bought a skein of cord and I will use my husband’s book on knots and learn to tie various knots.
Sounds like a silly thing to learn, right? But It’s a handy skill to have. It’s also completely out of my comfort zone. One of the key components of relieving stress is to do something with your hands, and also to learn something new. So learning something new to do with my hands will help me.
I ask all of you who read this post, do you have a skill you plan on learning in the New Year?
Happy New Year!

Yes, I used to be semi fluent in Spanish. That went by the wayside. I am determined to brush up, well maybe more than brush up on that language.
Marcia,
Learning or relearning a language is a serious undertaking .
But, a skill that is good for your brain and especially good if you travel!
Kudos to you!!!
Great idea, Diana! I haven't thought of something new to learn this year, outside of the usual learning more about writing and publishing. Maybe I should take up knots too. :-)
Diana, I used to do macramé and made wall hangings, etc. That's what first popped into my mind when you mentioned knots. Because of my hands, macramé is out. Not sure if I can resurrect crocheting. I did that for years making queen and king size blankets, vests, etc.
Right now my goal is to learn more about and actually Do the audio recording for my non-fiction "Staying Sane in a Crazy World". First though is figuring out some health information, getting tax material together, etc.
I keep thinking I want to take a class in something "artsy." But right now, I don't feel I have enough hours in the day as it is. One of the things I would like to try / learn is screenwriting. But that is related to what I already do. Still, it would be out of my comfort zone. Maybe mid-year or next year!
I like your idea of learning something new every month. It is good for your brain. My personal goals are more around keeping up with exercise, eating right, and accepting my limitations of time and energy. However, I do learn something new every month (actually every week) in my tap dance class. I used to love tap dancing and kept up with it into my mid-30s.
Then "adulting" happened which meant career, family stuff, and lots of other things that took over life. Last year, at age 68 I started taking tap classes again. It's both rewarding and challenging. Rewarding in that my boy remembers a lot of the steps. Challenging in that putting them together in sequence with a pace that matches the music is not so easy anymore. I find that half way through the hour class, my brain is already saying: "No, no no. Too much to take in." but I keep going anyway, and the next week it's a little better.
Brain-body connection is sooooo important for mental and physical health. Keep up your goals, Diana.
Lynn , Sarah, Judith, Maggie and Deb,
Thank you all for stopping by! I'm glad my post got you all to thinking about what you could do or are doing for brain health.
I love all your ideas!
