To Make Resolutions or Goals or Knot?

Each year up to now I’ve made resolutions. I’ve written them down, reviewed them weekly and by the end of February most have gone by the wayside.

 

This year I’ve made up a motto which is tacked to my bulletin board by my desk.

 

“Try something new monthly, work on goal list weekly, smile and be happy”.

 

My goals list is for writing and personal goals. Those lists are also on my bulletin board.

 

I am really looking forward to trying something new each month. This month I bought a skein of cord and I will use my husband’s book on knots and learn to tie various knots. 

 

Sounds like a silly thing to learn, right? But It’s a handy skill to have. It’s also completely out of my comfort zone. One of the key components of relieving stress is to do something with your hands, and also to learn something new. So learning something new to do with my hands will help me.

'Twas the Night Before New Year's - a Poem

‘Twas the night before New Year’s, and all through my home,

There was no one awake; I was up all alone.

My husband reclined with the cat on his lap,

Dog dozed on the hearth near the fire’s pop and snap.

I curled on the couch, read romance on my Kindle

And hoped that my horrible funk would soon dwindle.

I munched on dark chocolate, drank peppermint tea,

And mourned opportunities now lost to me.

When out on the deck someone pounded the wood,

I shivered and wondered who’s up to no good?

On my way to the kitchen I shook like a leaf,

Afraid I’d discover a big scary thief.

The rain-soaked boards glistened in the porch light,

Shadows danced gracefully through the black night.

Then what to my sleep-deprived eyes did appear,

But a wizened old man sporting two pointy ears!

He was dressed all in brown, wore a cape of gold feathers,

His angelic smile split a face of tanned leather.

I instantly recognized Old Father Time,

He waved a bright wand and then sang out this rhyme:

Fee, fie, foe, fum!

It’s New Year’s Eve; Why so glum?

You’ve blessings a-plenty to celebrate

And time to re-live them—it’s just half past eight!

Then, dancing a jig, he crossed the red rug

And grabbed my cold fingers and gave a hard tug.

When magic exploded like fireworks around us,

I couldn’t believe the next place that I found us!

Intensive Care Nursery, babe wrapped in fleece,

Doctor-signed papers that gave her release.

My tiniest granddaughter would be okay,

My heart swelled to bursting with joy on that day.

In dribbles and drabs,

In bits and in bites,

Father Time showed me blessings

The rest of the night.

I’ve family closer, good friends within reach,

Trips to the desert, the plains, and the beach.

Living my passion for words as I age,

Entwined with my husband, my heroic sage.

So many hours later back home by the fire,

My spirits could not have been lifted much higher.

I gave Time a hug to express my elation

And thanked him for spiritual recalibration.

“You are welcome,” he said. “But now I must fly!

Then, in the magical blink of an eye

He was gone and I gazed at the clock on a shelf

And I laughed when I saw it in spite of myself.

‘Twas the morning of New Year’s; cat stretched and dog yawned,

I told my dear husband the old year was gone.

“But the new! Oh, the New Year has come, full of promise!”

A toast and a tumble in bed paid it homage.

So to all you sad people I say, “Never fear!”

Contemplate, meditate, celebrate the New Year!

2022! Wow, Happy New Year!

What are you doing the first day of 2022? Me, I'm getting a cup of tea and a good book and relaxing. I can see the six inches of snow we have out my window. It is supposed to be sunny on New Years Day and I'm hoping it melts enough to go for a walk.

Do you go out to celebrate on New Years Eve?

We are having sparkling cider at home and will be lucky to stay awake till Midnight.

Christmas came and went too fast. Have you taken down any Christmas decorations you put up?

That is my chore on New Years Day! Along with making pork and bean soup for good luck in the New Year!

And what are your feelings on New Years resolutions or goals?

I have a list of Author goals and a list of personal goals. None are so hard I can't accomplish in 2022!

During each month my new personal calendar has a spot for writing goals for the month. At the end of the month is a spot to write what I did accomplish. I'm looking forward to using this as a guidance tool.

Celebrating the Seasons Reading Holiday Romances … Delsora Lowe

We celebrate many sacred holidays in December…among them Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. Thanksgiving is over. And New Year’s Eve is ahead of us. I am sure I have missed many sacred celebrations. But since this is not what my blog is about this month, I’ll not give you a rundown.

Instead, I have given you another list of holiday books I have read this season, or plan to continue to read in December and into the new year. And this list doesn't include the holiday books on my WISH LIST! Yes, I do love holiday-themed books

As stated in last month’s list, the books mentioned below are not listed as recommendations, but as books I read, that are written by authors I know, new authors whom I wished to try, as well as covers and titles that caught my eye. Exploring holidays that I know little about has been a fun, learning experience, especially when seen through the lens of romance.

A Holiday For Each Season

Ah, the seasons! There are so many different kinds of seasons. There are weather, growing, personal, life etc. seasons. And many have been touched upon here on this blog.

 

I’m going to share some of my favorite holidays that come with each season.  

 

Favorite Holidays

 

The first season, winter, from December 21^st  to March 20^th my favorite holiday is New Years! Not because so many get dressed up, and go to parties for the countdown to midnight, but for a time of reflection, and a time of setting new goals for myself. It’s a new beginning! Twelve whole months to achieve my goals. Sometimes those goals may change along the way, and that’s okay. I have my road map, I feel confident, and hopeful.

 

The second season, spring, March 21^st till June 20^th my favorite holiday is Easter. Another time of renewal. Easter has always been a time of family gatherings. Although, we live far away from our family, this year we will be celebrating with them. I have such fond memories of the kids and grandkids hunting for eggs. When my kids were little I hid their Easter baskets, I always made red-beet eggs, a family tradition, and of course all the messy fun dying Easter eggs. And the promise of daffodils peaking up out of the ground to announce Spring is on the way!

 

The third season, summer, June 21^st till September 22^nd my favorite holiday would have to be July 4^th! The tradition of celebrating America makes me so proud. We are a nation of mixed nationalities, a pot of different cultures and traditions. My ancestors were from Ireland, Germany, Scotland, France to name a few. They came to a new land with hopes and dreams. They fought for our rights and freedoms. Every July 4^th I love to watch the parades, hear the music and feel the pride of being American.

 

The fourth season, fall September 23 till December 20^th my favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. Another holiday for reflection. It’s a time to give thanks for all the goodness in my life. Things that mean the most to me like family, friends, and Zoom!

 

Whatever your favorite holidays are I hope you enjoy each and every one of them this year. After the pandemic year of 2020, and with the vaccine on the horizon, 2021 is shaping up to be a great year!
