Rocks and Water by Paty Jager

I've always been interested in how people discover that certain herbs work for different illnesses or injuries, or how some stones/gems can have certain effects on a person.

I'm currently listening to Leighann Dobbs "The Blackmore Sisters" Mystery box set and have found it intriguing how the characters in it use herbs for healing and stones/gems for healing. Which makes me want to pull out a couple of rock and gem books I have and my Native American Herbal book and sit down and devour them to learn more.  I hope to put some of the herbs into an upcoming book but I'll have to see how that will work into the story.

Rocks have always fascinated me. I have my eyes on the ground when I walk, scouting for a unique or interesting-looking rock. I have tumbled rocks a friend gave me that he'd picked up while in our area, and I have rocks that a deceased relative left me. I like holding them in my hands and studying them.

But what really makes me curious is a couple of years ago while browsing through stores with some friends we went into a rock and gem store and I came out with an egg-sized, but flatter, smooth purple swirled with white stone that is amethyst. It is for calming. At night when I can't fall asleep, I hold it in my hand and slip off to sleep.

And on my trip last year to Hawaii, I purchased a labradorite pendant and have found when I wear it I do feel more creative.

Now whether this is all in my head, who knows but I have to say they work for me.

And I wore a lot of turquoise over the weekend while visiting a friend and selling books. It has healing and calming effects.

I'm not sure what all of this has to do with the fact I was contacted by a legitimate person from a UK (United Kingdom) reader magazine and asked if I'd be open to having them do an interview with me for the magazine.

Of course! I'm not sure if it was all the stones I've brought into my life or the fact I changed the cover of the book they asked to promote but I will never turn down a free chance to talk about books and writing.

The book that I changed the cover on is Double Duplicity book 1 in the Shandra Higheagle Mystery series. This is the new cover:

Instead of a body slumped in a chair with a bloody blouse, I went for the art theme that is part of the story.

To continue with my good fortune, I have a new release in my Spotted Pony Casino Mystery series and it is getting some good reviews.

The Pinch

Book 5

Dela Alvaro, head of security for the Spotted Pony Casino, is asked to do a security check of a casino on the Oregon Coast. She no sooner starts her rounds at the casino and a child of a dubious couple is kidnapped. Special Agent Quinn Pierce of the FBI has been out to get the father for some time.

One of Dela’s best friends from the Army is also at the casino and they catch up. The next morning, Dela finds her friend strangled. As Dela struggles with the violent death of yet another best friend, Tribal Officer Heath Seaver arrives and the two begin untangling the lies, kidnapping, and murder.

As Heath carries the kidnapped child to safety, Dela must face a cunning killer alone.

This book is set in one of my favorite places, the Oregon Coast. It is my place where I reenergize. The ocean and water in general have always been where I'd go when things felt off or I needed to boost my morale. As a kid, I'd sit on the strip of land that was between the Lostine River and the Sheep Ridge ditch. I'd sit on the damp earth with my back against a cottonwood tree and either read, write, or draw as I listened to the water. There was a fish ladder upstream from where I'd sit and when the river was high you could hear the water roaring over the top of the cement forms built to slow the flow and allow the salmon to navigate upstream.

I would have to say rocks and water have always been my calming elements and as I learn more I understand why.

Paty, I really enjoyed your post. Herbs and minerals have always been an interest. Congratulations on the UK reader magazine interview! I like the new cover for Double Duplicity better than the old one.

Your new book set on the Oregon Coast sounds awesome. Why am I not surprised? Guess I better buy it!

Paty,

Really good post. I have always believed in the power of rocks and herbs. Like you when I wear certain stones I feel calmer.
Your new cover is really nice, and I do like it better!

Thanks, Lynn! I know it's mostly a mind thing and if that works, well I'm all for it!

Is the picture on the cover of "The Pinch" one that you took at the beach? And I really like the cover on "Double Duplicity". I think you had some of your brother's work showcased in that book?

My house and yard have numerous stones and semi-precious gems as well as pounds of "interesting" stones and agates I've picked up wherever I've traveled.

Amethyst is also a healing stone. I've forgotten about using my stones for healing. I'm going to put my amethyst necklace on and maybe a ring I have. It can't hurt.

JUdith, yes, the background photo on The Pinch was taken during my research trip to Lincoln City. I was glad it worked for the cover. And, yes, the first cover of "Double Duplicity" did show case my brother's artwork. But my niece playing dead with a red spot in the middle of her chest had some of my advertising for the book turned down. Put that amethyst on! It can never hurt to add any type of healing or health that is organic to your life.
