Women In Chemistry History #chemistry #science

 

Hi, I'm Pippa Jay, author of scifi and supernatural stories to engage your emotions. And in part, I probably wouldn't be able to do that if women of science hadn't made their presence and intelligence felt over the years. It must have taken them so much more to achieve their goals, and to be recognized - many aren't being heard of until now. How many went to their graves feeling that their discoveries, their knowledge, the impact it all made meant nothing. The strength of will it must have taken to persist in a world and particularly a field dominated by men. I wish we could tell them how much of a difference it made, and particularly to me.


Because first and foremost, I consider myself a scientist. I'm not sure if my love of science fiction triggered my love for science, or vice versa, or if the two were simply inevitably entwined. And while I consider myself predominantly a writer of soft scifi in the style of Doctor Who and Star Wars rather than the hard variety, I still try to include at least some theoretically sound science into my writing. I can remember the disappointment of spending days researching the current theories behind artificial gravity to discover the rather tentative view relied almost entirely on something revolving, either part of the space craft, or potentially high powered magnets. Another day spent researching ion drives for space ships, to only use one line of my new found knowledge in a story still as yet unpublished. Or the ghoulish fascination into what exactly happens to a human body in space...


But as it's Women's History month and my place of work is just about to celebrate Science Week with SciFest, which I've been busy preparing for, I thought I'd share a few of those historical women from my particular field of specialism - chemistry! Without these women, I may not have been afforded the privilege to study science or to make a career in it, and now be a part of educating the next generations of scientists. And who knows what they might discover?! (Hopefully a better system for artificial gravity for one!).

Love is the Drug




Hi, I'm Pippa Jay, author of scifi and supernatural stories to engage your emotions.

As both a scientist with a specialism in chemistry and a sci-fi romance author, it's hard not to talk love without thinking about the biochemistry of it. 


And for some of my characters, particularly the alien ones, the biochemistry is more complex still. 

For my couple in Imprint - my short story in Tales from the SFR Brigade - my alien hero is drawn to one soulmate, and linked forever by his biochemical attachment to the heroine, to the point where he could never fall for anyone else.



While in book two of my main series - Keir's Fall - the villain of the piece binds males of both her own species and humans with a venom loaded kiss that entraps them. 

Of course, attraction and love are not all chemical based. There has to be some elements of physical attraction, and/or a meeting of minds, an alignment in interests or beliefs, or values. At least, to maintain a relationship after the initial spark. But I don't think I'm ever going to be able to resist my interest in exploring the science of it.

A Chemical #Romance #science

Love is one of the most common themes in creative arts. It’s considered part of the survival instinct, a drive that helps keep human beings together to ensure the continuation of the species. Perhaps that’s why it’s such a common theme, particularly in science fiction, where threats to the species can be so much bigger and catastrophic on a galactic, or even universal scale.


But how would that work for a relationship between two different species, as can happen in a science fiction romance? Would a species that might be physically compatible respond in the same way to the pheromones released by a human? What if they had the opposite effect? And if love in a human is the drive to mate and perpetuate the species, how does that work with a biologically incompatible partner? Will we ever find out for real!?


Most of us are aware that love is supposedly the result of a cocktail of different chemicals surging round our bodies. That initial dizziness we feel, the racing heart, the sweaty palms and hot flushes are all down to the release of dopamine, norepinephrine and phenylethylamine. The feeling of bliss comes from the “pleasure drug” dopamine. The racing heart and excitement are due to the adrenaline-like norepinephrine. Together they produce elation, intense energy, sleeplessness, loss of appetite: all the classic symptoms of being in love. When a couple has sex, oxytocin is released during orgasm and creates an emotional bond. The more sex, the greater the bond.
Most of my involved couples have been human (or relatively so!). But romance in science fiction where one or both of the characters isn’t human is part of what gives sfr a greater scope to explore. To pursue a whole range of ‘what ifs’ beyond the simple ‘will they/won’t they?’ get together. That’s what I love about science fiction romance, where a happily ever after may not just depend on that first kiss. For example, in one of my not quite human pairings, the non-human species relies on a chemical signature that tells them 'this is your one true mate', and once found, there's no future happiness with anyone else. A huge pressure on their human soulmate, who may not feel quite the same!

And a couple of years ago I finally published a romance with a completely alien character, which presented some interesting challenges. How does a completely different type of corporeal entity even interact with a human, let alone find love?

And I still have one more story in progress where love must try to cross the divide between species. As if finding love isn't hard enough sometimes...

As If By Magic

This month's theme--My Writing Dreams Come True--instantly made me think of magic.  Because the fulfillment of any of my dreams: authoring a bestseller, having one of my books scripted for the big screen, or simply having a reader say, "I enjoyed the read," would indeed be magical.


Only... Do I believe in magic?  

Do you?


If you’re geekishly inclined (like moi), you might want to pause before you respond with a resounding “NO.” While we hardcore logical types tend to mistrust anything we can’t reduce to an equation, I ask you to consider the following:

Soundwaves: Most of us have some understanding of the principles of sound. We agree our cellphones can transmit data, voice and images across the country because of science. But exactly why do soundwaves (radio waves, microwaves, etc., etc.) exist? Why do they work the way they do? One could successfully argue that the existence of this phenomenon is, in itself, magical.

The Reproductive Process: An egg is fertilized, cells start to divide and grow. For humans, a new member of our species is delivered nine-plus months later.  Pure science, right? But exactly what drives that cell to divide? For that matter, what drives mankind to reproduce in the first place? We call it the “miracle of birth” for a reason.

Our Habitable Planet: We can explain, in scientific terms, what makes life possible on Earth, but think about the exact combination of factors that must exist for humanoid life:
            **  We must be the right distance from the sun.
            **  A magnet field is required to protect us from deadly radiation.
            **  Water (and carbon, and a host of other stuff) must be in plentiful supply.
            ** An atmosphere is essential.
            ** We need rock; not to mention our planet must be the right size, with a molten core, and tectonic plates.
            ** A moon, rotating at the appropriate distance from the planet.  The big, shiny object in the night sky is directly responsible for the Earth's orbital tilt angle, and thus responsible for our climate and tides.  Without the Moon, the Earth would wander in response to the gravitational pulls of the sun and Jupiter. Translation, no more life as we know it. In other words, we’d be Mars.
            **  Etc., etc., etc. While all the reasons for our planet’s habitability can be explained scientifically, the combination of unique factors that must coexist to constitute our living planet is mind-boggling. Perhaps our uniqueness id the reason we’ve found no other signs of humanoid life in this vast universe.

Falling in Love: Enough said.

Dictionary.com defines magic as:
“the art of producing a desired effect or result through the use of incantation or various other techniques that presumably assure human control of supernatural agencies or the forces of nature.” If you substitute “invention” or “industry” for the word “incantation,” isn’t that also a definition for science?

Until we magically get the answer (to this question and a plethora of other philosophical ones), I will simply "hope" your dreams come true.

Do You Believe in Magic?

Romantic Science Fiction

Genres have been on my mind lately. Not just genres, but subgenres. Do I write "science fantasy" or "science fiction"? "apocalyptic" or "dystopic"? "science fiction romance" (SFR) or "romantic science fiction" (RSF)?

This last pair is what I want to talk about today, because I didn't know there was a difference until recently. Why do I care? Because I've had several agents who represent science fiction request my manuscript, only to pass on representation because there was "too much science" in my story.

Too much science?

How can science fiction readers not want the science explained? In my opinion, just setting characters onto another world and throwing in a space ship or two doesn't make something science fiction. There must be verisimilitude – credibility that such a world could exist. That is where the science part of science fiction becomes important.

I was baffled by the rejections.

So I did what any good scientist would do; I researched and developed a theory about why these agents didn't like the science.

Why are readers these days okay with novels not explaining how things work? This is where the distinction between SFR and RSF becomes important. Although these agents claim to represent science fiction, they are big names in the romance industry. As romance readers, they want the story – be it paranormal, contemporary, historical, or science fiction – to be about a relationship first and foremost. Any speculative, otherworldly, or scientific elements of the story must be less important to the plot than the romance. In fact, the story they want could not exist without the romance. The science is taken for granted. Science Fiction has become part of our culture. Other writers have already done all the speculation for us. Who hasn't seen an episode of Star Trek, or a movie with aliens or space ships? The proof is already out there. Why prove it again?

Most romance readers don't care about the science. They just want a really good story about a relationship.

They want Science Fiction Romance.

I like romance. Love is what binds characters together, and binds readers to my characters. But love doesn't dominate the story in science fiction. My manuscript, Botanicaust, has a love interest relationship, but the plot could proceed without the romance. In fact, it wouldn't be too hard to rewrite the novel and remove the romance altogether.

But take out the science, and Botanicaust falls apart.

I write Romantic Science Fiction.

See the difference? It is all a matter of where the emphasis lies. The rejections are because I've been targeting the wrong readers.

Finding Balance

I tend to be an all-or-nothing kind of person. When I set my mind on a goal, I pursue it without reserve. For instance, in high school, I loved science. I loved it so much, I dropped AP English so I could take AP Biology and AP Chemistry. I joined the Science Club and baked superconductors in the school kiln.

But I’ll never forget a scholarship interview I had with some engineers. They laughed that I had included some awards for poetry in my scholarship portfolio. “A poetry writing engineer.” I can still feel the heat in my face as one man shook his head in disbelief.

Only a few months later I attended a Department of Energy science camp at Lawrence Berkley Laboratory and realized what a life of science might mean for me – sleeping on a cot in the lab so I could run experiments day and night. I knew I wanted more out of life than a lab.

Once again, that all-or-nothing side of me kicked in, and I turned my back on science in pursuit of the written word. I immersed myself in Stephen King, Anne Rice, Jean Auel, and Andre Norton. I majored in English in college, and even started my first novel as my senior thesis. Fantasy, Romance, Horror. I wanted to write it all.

Now, twenty years later (yes, that’s telling my age a little) I have finally found my “voice.” And guess what? It happens to be smack dab in the middle of my two favorite subjects – science and fiction. I guess the pendulum had to swing both ways before coming to rest.
