Terry Spear's SEAL Wolves in Action!

Thanks so much for inviting me to come to the Romancing the Genres during Military Romance Month!!

SEAL Wolves in Action!

A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing was my ninth book in the series, but my third book was To Tempt the Wolf, and it's really the beginning of my mention of the SEAL wolves. Hunter Greymere was their team leader, and then I finally was able to get back to them in A SEAL in Wolf's Clothing. I continued with writing about the team in: A SEAL Wolf Christmas, SEAL Wolf Hunting, SEAL Wolf in too Deep, SEAL Wolf Undercover.

I'm retired Army Reserves, my dad retired Air Force, my mom and sister and brother-in-law in the Army, all but my mother retiring, my son in the Air Force, both ex-husbands military, one Army, one Air Force, so for me, creating military heroes is fun, and a natural course of action.

I think of leadership, fighting ability, protecting, first-aid knowledge, the training for rescues and more, when I think of a military hero. In my cougar shifter series, the heroes are former Army, and now, most are part of the police force in Yuma Town.

I met a girl yesterday at the grocery store who was bench pressing 250 lbs, getting in shape for signing up to be a Navy SEAL. But her mom went into a crying fit and so she didn't do it. But I was impressed that she had been working so hard to get in shape to try out to be a Navy SEAL. Only a few men make it through the program. For women, it's even harder.

When I think of creating a hero—it's easier to make a character more believable, who's able to handle whatever I throw at them, if they have a former military background. Think of it. If I said Joe Smith was this sexy librarian who fought Ninja-type assassins, it would be a stretch, wouldn't it? Somehow, it's just hard to see how someone who is untrained to handle such a thing could.

Still, I don't do it just because it's "easy." I do it because I love the military and military types. That makes it easy.

In A SEAL Wolf Christmas, my heroine was former Army. She's just as capable as the men to take down the bad guys. My editor thought she should be a librarian or something, because she thought she was too tough. No way! A librarian in the Amazon jungle trying to help save hostages from terrorists?

She wasn't there as a hostage! She was there as one of the team!

Certainly, I don't mean to put librarians down. I worked at one for five years and loved it. But I was retired Army, and I can't imagine any of my co-workers getting down and dirty, with the kind of training she would need to handle the mission, unless she had a lot of training for some other reason.

In my first jaguar book, Savage Hunger, the heroine is Army also. And so is the heroine in SEAL Wolf Undercover. Even in some of my other books: a vampire romantic suspense—Killing the Bloodlust, where she is a huntress hunting rogue vampires, she's also an Army officer on active duty, and the hero is too; and In the Dead of the Night, the men are FBI agents, but former Army, so is the heroine; Bound for Danger, again, FBI agents are former Army, and she's an Army officer on active duty. I based it at Fort Hood, Texas, where I was stationed for one of my tours of duty when I was on active duty.

But I like to give them an edge—so with the shifters, they have their enhanced senses: sight, smell, hearing, strength. Though they are often up against their own kind with the same abilities. With the vampire book, increased strength, and in the Bound by Danger, she's psychic, and has premonitions of future happenings.

Excerpt from SEAL Wolf Undercover by Terry Spear
Vaughn observed the brunette laughing at something the redhead said at their table. She turned her head in Vaughn’s direction, as if she realized someone was watching her. He hadn’t meant to be staring at her, but everything about her appealed, and he just couldn’t take his eyes off her.
He smiled. She smiled. In that instant, he felt they’d made a connection. As lame as that was. When she left the club tonight, she was going home with the muscular guy who had his arm wrapped around her like he was afraid he’d lose her. From what Vaughn could tell, she hadn’t once shown any interest in anyone else but her date. Oh sure, when she was seated at her table and sipping from a drink, she was watching other dancers, but she wasn’t focusing on any one person. Not like he was focusing on her.
Her gaze caught his again, and he couldn’t help but smile. Not that her checking him out meant anything. But he sure could fantasize.
***
Formerly an army intelligence officer and now a PI, Jillian Matthews had agreed to go out with her brother Miles’s friend as a favor, but man did the guy have octopus arms. Oh sure, he was fun, but way more interested than she was. The guy several tables over, now he got her attention. If she didn’t know any better, she’d say he was all wolf, though some human males showed the same wolfish interest in a woman, even if she was with someone else. She’d never think about dumping a guy on a date when he was being nice, especially when it was to pay her brother back for his help in solving one of her cases. But she’d made sure she said it was only one date, unless she changed her mind.
Everything about the club was a blast—the music, drinks, dancers, and atmosphere—yet the man at the other table truly stole her attention tonight.
“Did you want to return here tomorrow night?” Miles asked.
She smiled at her brother. She’d love to if the other guy was going to be here. He had dark hair, chiseled features, tanned biceps. He was muscular but not overdone, and had a darkly, intriguing smile that made her melt.

Then she learns he's a SEAL wolf, no wonder she was intrigued! She ends up shooting the wolf, for a very good reason though! It helps to have that military training!

Thanks so much for having me at Romance the Genres during the exciting Military Romance Month! I salute you and readers who love the military romances!

SHIFTING IS IN THE BLOOD by Terry Spear

One winning person who leaves a comment (include email address) will win an audible book and another winner, an ebook. Thanks so much for dropping by on this lovely Halloween!!!

Jaguar Pride Excerpt
   by Terry Spear
Stepping through snarled roots and wet and muddy leaf litter, Melissa's paws didn't make any sound as she moved through the towering tropical trees, her ears perked, listening for human voices.
Wearing his black jaguar coat, Huntley was sniffing the air nearby, pausing to listen. Darkness had claimed the area, the trees blocking any hint of light at dusk, not to mention the rainclouds moving in. Though Melissa's golden coat, covered in black rosettes, was difficult to see at night if anyone should shine a flashlight on her, Huntley was even harder to see, making him hauntingly ghost-like. In broad daylight, his rosettes could be seen, but in a darkly elegant way. She'd never tell him though. As hot as he looked, he probably well knew it, and she didn't want him to think she was interested, or anything. Not when they were both currently seeing someone else.
She loved working with him though.
Black jaguars, a melanistic form, averaged about six percent of the regular jaguar population. The jaguar shifters weren't sure about the ratio with their own kind. Huntley's mother was a beautiful black jaguar, and his dad, golden. Both his brother, Everett, and sister, Tammy, were golden also. For whatever reason, Huntley's coat appealed to Melissa, especially on missions like this. He seemed like a Ninja warrior in jaguar form, sleek, agile, and deadly. And she liked that he was wild, like she was, able to live in their native environments without a hitch. Unless they had trouble with poachers.

I was reading a “white warrior shifter” book once where there was no shifting. What??? Yep. They had sex, and talked about how she was a white warrior wolf, but never showed how she was, nor did she ever turn wolf. To qualify as a shifter book to me, the heroine or hero have to shift.
Earlier on, I had read this cool fantasy historical where she was at a lake, talking with the animals, and then a black panther is watching her. Later, we have a handsome dude who is panther-like in his movements, but nowhere did the story actually show him shifting or that he was truly a shifter or that the panther was a shifter. Maybe it wasn’t. But then why say the man moved like a black panther and was watching her at the lake like he was a hot panther shifter? Bad form. If someone is a shifter, show it. If not, don’t allude to it. I kept feeling like the author was afraid to show a shifter as if it might hurt sales, so she just alluded to it for coolness sake. But if there is to be a shifter, I want to know it—for real.
The first shifter story I ever read was when I was a kid and fell in love with the handsome prince who had been cursed by a wicked witch to be a polar bear during the day and a handsome man at night, East of the Moon and West of the Sun. It was the first time that I’d ever envisioned that someone that was a wild animal at some point in their life could be the same as a regal and kind and loving and handsome man. Yum.

I loved Ladyhawke where he was cursed to be a wolf and she a hawk and neither could be with each other in their human forms. Of course, it drove me crazy that they couldn’t be together, but I loved the beauty of the characters and their wilder halves.
I fell in love with Dracula when I was thirteen and saw him in a college play. He’s a shapeshifter too, you know. Some show vampires shifting into bats, others, wolves. And still others, all kinds of different things. But I also felt sorry for Dracula and Wolfman, and in both cases, I felt they deserved to be loved, just like anyone. And so when I wrote vampire stories, and shapeshifting stories to include wolves, jaguars, cougars, and next year, a polar bear shifter, I wanted to show that they were real people, based on real animals, needing real love. I also wanted to show that they were their own people, not despising what they are, but comfortable in their skin…or fur.
I love writing contemporary, but I’m also a huge fan of historical, so I’ll be working on a historical wolf story also.

What would you do if the sexier than life prince that you fell in love with was cursed as a polar bear during the day and you only had him at night to have and to hold?

Military Romance - Paranormal Style

By Terry Spear

They say to write what you know, and since I was in the military, it seems appropriate. My father was, my
mother, my son is, my sister, and so forth.

But I have kind of a twist to it. I love the paranormal, so plain old military romance is not as much fun for me as writing something paranormal. Or suspenseful.

I do have characters in books who are former military—such as In the Dead of the Night, that is straight romantic suspense. But then I have taken it to the next level—an officer stationed at Fort Hood, who is psychic. Again, a romantic suspense. I based it, in part, on some experiences I had while stationed there as a brand new butter bar, or 2nd lieutenant in Bound by Danger. I expanded my paranormal bent in Killing the Bloodlust, where both the hero and heroine are vampire hunters, stationed at Fort Hood. Everyone knows vampires and the hunters exist, but the military doesn't want either in its ranks.

In my wolf stories, I have the SEAL wolves, who are wolf shifters, and were members of a SEAL team, only no one knows about that special side of them—the wolf side, that is. And in my jaguar shifters, they have their own military force, policing their own kind, oftentimes south of the border. With my cougar shifter series, some of the men in the small town are Special Forces.

What could be better than romancing our forces?
