Worst Vacation Ever By Kathy Coatney

This month’s theme for Romancing The Genres is the worst shopping trip ever. Since I'm not much of a shopper, and I absolutely adore shopping online, I decided to share my worst vacation ever.

When our children were young back in the late 80s, four and seven, we had friends with kids that were the same age. They invited us to their cabin on a private lake. We were excited and left early on a Saturday morning for a three-day weekend. It was about an hour from our home. We parked and hiked in about half a mile, arriving midmorning, then began unpacking. The kids were crazy excited and raced into the bedroom to play.

Not five minutes later, a howl came from the bedroom. I raced in to find our four-year-old had jammed his knee into his eye. It was quickly swelling, and turning purple and black. Fortunately, it wasn't serious enough for an ER visit. After a few hugs and kisses, he was back on track and playing with the rest of the kids.

We finished unpacking and went out for a hike. In my memory, the hill we climbed was almost vertical, but in retrospect, I doubt it was really much of a hill. We hiked to the top, then started back down. We’d barely gone fifty feet when our youngest tripped and fell, rolling down the hill before we could grab him. He came up covered in scratches and blood, but again, nothing serious enough for an ER visit. We cleaned him up, put on Band-Aids where needed, and he was off playing again.

We had dinner and everyone was exhausted, so we headed to bed early. I’d been asleep about an hour when I suddenly had to rush out to the outhouse with the worst case of diarrhea I'd ever experienced. I came out to find our oldest son with the same issues. We spent the night in and out of the outhouse. By morning I was exhausted and ready to go home, even though we’d planed on staying another day.

We began packing and our friends offered to let the boys stay with them, but my husband and I felt like we wanted everybody home as we weren't sure what catastrophe would happen in our absence.

This was one of those vacations where you never want to repeat it, but at the same time, it becomes something we laugh about on a regular basis. These are the memories I use when I'm writing to bring humor into my stories. I feel it’s essential since I tend to deal with heavier topics.

In my first book, Falling For You…Again the couple lost their 14-year-old daughter in a boating accident two years before the book began. I interspersed humor in that story often to deal with the heavier topics.

In my latest book, Falling in Love With Her, book 5 in The Murphy Clan—Falling in Love Series, I used humor throughout the book as my heroine, Ingie Pulaski, was abandoned by her mother at a young age. This meant she had heavy issues to contend with, so I used levity to soften her pain. I also had the Trench Coat Brigade on hand to add humorous moments to the book. What you'll find in almost all of my books is a serious topic infused with laughter to provides heartwarming prose and a happily-ever-after that will leaves the reader smiling and happy at the end of the book.

Do you like humor your books?

Falling in Love With Her is available now.

A LEFT AT THE ALTAR, FRIENDS TO LOVERS, BROTHER’S BEST FRIEND, AFRAID TO COMMIT, DESTINED TO BE TOGETHER, ROMANTIC MYSTERY NOT TO BE MISSED!

Ingie

Love, marriage, and a family aren’t in the cards for me after my fiancĂ© left me at the altar. I was so certain he loved me, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. My mother’s words haunt me. “She’s an ugly duckling. She’ll never attract a man. A husband and family aren’t in her future.” Instead of dwelling on the past, I focus on running Three Rivers Fly Shop and Boat Repair, the legacy from my father.

Two years later, Ian Callahan, my brother’s best friend and my childhood heartthrob, returns home. Certain he’ll never see the swan lurking beneath the ugly duckling, the same as when we were teenagers, I protect my heart by insisting on a friends with benefits relationship. The fact is, I don’t need love. I have my work, a persnickety, one-eyed cat, and keeping the Trench Coat Brigade in line—a wacky group of seniors with a penchant for meddling, matchmaking, and mystery-solving.

Ian

After my last relationship crashed and burned, I left my job as an arson investigator and firefighter in Seattle to return home. Ready to settle down, my hometown is the only place I want to put down roots. And the only woman I want to make a life with is Ingie Pulaski. She’s smart, sassy, and fearless, but she wants a causal relationship

When a building is torched and a body is found, I find myself keeping tabs on the Trench Coat Brigade to ensure they stay out of trouble. But there’s an added benefit to that assignment—I’m spending a lot more time with Ingie. And I’m making it my mission to show her there’s more to our relationship than friends with benefits.

I’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places until I meet up with Ian again. Now I have to conquer my deepest fear—abandonment—or lose the only man who loves me just the way I am.

Finding Joy By Kathy Coatney

The theme for Romancing the Genres this month is dreams and goals. My main goal for 2023 is searching for joy. When I first thought about what brings me joy, I drew a blank. I'm one of those people who doesn’t do well being put on the spot with a question. I need time to process it. And it took me a few minutes before my brain kicked in, but the first joy that came to me were the children in my life.

Is there anything more precious than a baby's first smile, a toddler’s belly laugh, a five-year-old’s first time riding a bike without training wheels, or an eight-year-old’s wonder at nature? Those were all things that gave me immense joy as I watched my grandchildren progress through these milestones this year. And it happens so fast. One minute they’re babies, and the next they’re in grade school. I’ve spent time absorbing and enjoying these moments because they go by in the blink of an eye.

I also find joy spending time with my husband, my sons and their families, extended family, and friends. But beyond that I still find incredible joy whenever it snows. The crisp, clean snow, and the utter silence that fills the landscape. I love cross-country skiing, and in particular, fresh snow clinging to the pine trees. And then there’s spring in central Oregon that's mostly like winter just less snow. Spring actually arrives in mid-June when the rhododendrons are bursting with color and the lavenders in full bloom. I find joy in the fresh scent of pine when we mountain bike or hike in the woods with the birds singing around us or a squirrel zipping up a tree.

As I find the joy in my life, it ends up in my books as well. Since I write contemporary romance, I have babies and young children in my stories more frequently these days than I used to. I think that's because I was only exposed to older children until my grandchildren began arriving. Now that I have young children in my life, it gives me plenty of inspiration for my writing.

I also like to incorporate the beauty of nature in my writing. Book five in the Falling in Love Series, Falling in Love With Her is up for preorder, and it’s set in Paradise Falls, Idaho, on Lake Serenity. I absolutely love the abundance of wildlife, thick forests, and babies and toddlers in this series. Every time I write about Paradise Falls and the characters residing there, I’m overcome with happiness, and I can’t wait to bring it to life for my readers.

         What gives you joy?

Falling in Love With Her releases September 5, 2023, but it’s available for preorder now.

Celebrating Christmas in July By Kathy Coatney

A fun fact about me is—I'm a big fan of winter. I love snow. I love cuddling up by the fire. I love to cross country skiing. I don’t even mind shoveling snow, so winter is my jam. When I first started writing the Falling in Love series I set the story in winter. Christmas stories were really popular, but for some reason I resisted writing them. Finally, I thought this is silly. I love Christmas. I love winter. Why wasn’t I writing some Christmas themed stories?

I finally started the Crooked Halo Christmas Chronicles. They are short Christmas stories with matchmaking angels. I had a lot of fun with the angels, and I still write that series, but I’ve moved on to writing the Vermont Christmas Romance series. These are full-length books, and the inspiration for these books was bittersweet.

Several years ago I attended the Emerald City Romance conference in Seattle. My roommate invited me to join her for dinner with a group of authors and readers, and I was thrilled. We went to dinner that evening, and I met a woman named Jody Sherin—a tiny whirlwind of energy and an avid reader.

Jody introduced herself to me, then proceeded to tell me when she found out I was coming she bought my book and read it overnight. For the next ten minutes she raved about my book and my writing. Needless to say we became fast friends, and as our friendship evolved over the years, she was not only my avid reader, but she critiqued my books for me.

Jody adored Christmas and started decorating early in November. She had numerous trees and her holiday decorations that were a sight to behold. In April 2021, Jody died unexpectedly. For anyone who knew her, Jody made friends everywhere she went. I always envied her that as I am much more reserved.

I missed her so much, and in June of 2021 I came up with Santa Comes to Snowside, the first book in the Vermont Christmas series with a matchmaking Jody and Nick Claws, actually Santa and Mrs. Claus. As I wrote that first book, I felt Jody’s presence as I typed every word. It gave me comfort and joy to feel her with me. And if I headed in a wrong direction, you can bet she was at my shoulder guiding me back on track!

In the book, Jody and Nick Claws arrive in Snowside, Vermont to bring together Annie Murphy, a transit bus driver raising her teenage nephew on her own, and Jack Davidson, a man on the road to enlightenment and owner of a local charity that helps people get back into the working world. I had so much fun writing this book. At the same time, it constantly brought me to tears because it reminded me of Jody, and what a wonderful person she was, and how the world was a little less bright without her presence.

Santa Comes to Snowside is dedicated to Jody. As I finished the book and shared it with her husband, I took on another project. In collaboration with two other authors that are friends of mine and Jody's, Wendy Delaney and Dana Delmar, we put together a memoir of Jody with contributions from her family and friends. We took on the project with great joy, but it was hard. Every time we read the heartfelt comments about our friend it tore at our hearts, but it was worth it because now we have a beautiful memory of her with Jody Burchinal Sherin: A Celebration.

There are two books in The Vermont Christmas series, and I have plans for book three, but I haven't started it yet. I think I'm waiting for Jody to give me inspiration, but knowing Jody she’s busy decorating heaven and will get back to me when she has time to show me the next couple in need of her assistance.

What do you like most about Christmas stories?

Santa Comes to Snowside
What music do Santa’s elves like the best? Wrap music!

Annie Murphy, a transit bus driver in Snowside, Vermont, loves scavenger hunts and the corny jokes her riders share. She has a heart as big as the city and gave up college to raise her orphaned nephew without a second thought. But so far true love has eluded her.

A downturn in the economy five years ago sent Jack Davidson down a path to enlightenment. Giving up a lucrative career in finance and his swanky high-rise apartment, he invested all his savings to start Job Hunters 4 You, a nonprofit that helps the unemployed find work. The only thing missing is that special someone in his life.

Jody and Nick Claws arrive on Jack’s doorstep in matching red and green plaid flannel shirts, the spitting image of Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus. The pair are on a mission to work their Christmas magic on two lonely hearts—Annie and Jack.

Grab your copy today because nothing kicks off the holidays like a match made in heaven.
