‘Tis The Season for Holiday Romances ..... ..... ..... by Debora (Deb) Noone w/a Delsora Lowe

I think I have been doing more reading than writing lately. It didn’t help the writing cause to have my computer in the shop for almost three weeks. Now trying to get back in writing mode with only a week before my daughter and her family arrive for the holidays and “camp out” at my son’s house, about a forty-minute drive away. Presents, menu planning, and reserving time to see family will be priority for the next few weeks. Plus, getting to a few varsity hockey games for my in-state grandson.

Having said that, my Kindle will be my respite.

As usual, I have purchased more holiday books than I can read before 2025 roars in. But I am one to read holiday books all year round – especially in the colder, darker months of January and February. And I love reading holiday books for other holidays through the year.

I also love writing holiday short romances. I was privileged to sell both an Easter and a Thanksgiving story to Woman’s World this year – one of my BIG writing goals for 2024. Fingers crossed... I hope to release a book with short romances (around an 8-minute read for each,) sometime in 2025!

Here’s to Happy Holidays to all! And don’t forget to start thinking about personal and professional goals for 2025.

Books I have read so far:

Finding Joy By Kathy Coatney

The theme for Romancing the Genres this month is dreams and goals. My main goal for 2023 is searching for joy. When I first thought about what brings me joy, I drew a blank. I'm one of those people who doesn’t do well being put on the spot with a question. I need time to process it. And it took me a few minutes before my brain kicked in, but the first joy that came to me were the children in my life.

Is there anything more precious than a baby's first smile, a toddler’s belly laugh, a five-year-old’s first time riding a bike without training wheels, or an eight-year-old’s wonder at nature? Those were all things that gave me immense joy as I watched my grandchildren progress through these milestones this year. And it happens so fast. One minute they’re babies, and the next they’re in grade school. I’ve spent time absorbing and enjoying these moments because they go by in the blink of an eye.

I also find joy spending time with my husband, my sons and their families, extended family, and friends. But beyond that I still find incredible joy whenever it snows. The crisp, clean snow, and the utter silence that fills the landscape. I love cross-country skiing, and in particular, fresh snow clinging to the pine trees. And then there’s spring in central Oregon that's mostly like winter just less snow. Spring actually arrives in mid-June when the rhododendrons are bursting with color and the lavenders in full bloom. I find joy in the fresh scent of pine when we mountain bike or hike in the woods with the birds singing around us or a squirrel zipping up a tree.

As I find the joy in my life, it ends up in my books as well. Since I write contemporary romance, I have babies and young children in my stories more frequently these days than I used to. I think that's because I was only exposed to older children until my grandchildren began arriving. Now that I have young children in my life, it gives me plenty of inspiration for my writing.

I also like to incorporate the beauty of nature in my writing. Book five in the Falling in Love Series, Falling in Love With Her is up for preorder, and it’s set in Paradise Falls, Idaho, on Lake Serenity. I absolutely love the abundance of wildlife, thick forests, and babies and toddlers in this series. Every time I write about Paradise Falls and the characters residing there, I’m overcome with happiness, and I can’t wait to bring it to life for my readers.

         What gives you joy?

Falling in Love With Her releases September 5, 2023, but it’s available for preorder now.

A LEFT AT THE ALTAR, FRIENDS TO LOVERS, BROTHER’S BEST FRIEND, AFRAID TO COMMIT, DESTINED TO BE TOGETHER, ROMANTIC MYSTERY NOT TO BE MISSED!

Ingie

Love, marriage, and a family aren’t in the cards for me after my fiancé left me at the altar. I was so certain he loved me, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. My mother’s words haunt me. “She’s an ugly duckling. She’ll never attract a man. A husband and family aren’t in her future.” Instead of dwelling on the past, I focus on running Three Rivers Fly Shop and Boat Repair, the legacy from my father.

Two years later, Ian Callahan, my brother’s best friend and my childhood heartthrob, returns home. Certain he’ll never see the swan lurking beneath the ugly duckling, the same as when we were teenagers, I protect my heart by insisting on a friends with benefits relationship. The fact is, I don’t need love. I have my work, a persnickety, one-eyed cat, and keeping the Trench Coat Brigade in line—a wacky group of seniors with a penchant for meddling, matchmaking, and mystery-solving.

Ian

After my last relationship crashed and burned, I left my job as an arson investigator and firefighter in Seattle to return home. Ready to settle down, my hometown is the only place I want to put down roots. And the only woman I want to make a life with is Ingie Pulaski. She’s smart, sassy, and fearless, but she wants a causal relationship.

When a building is torched and a body is found, I find myself keeping tabs on the Trench Coat Brigade to ensure they stay out of trouble. But there’s an added benefit to that assignment—I’m spending a lot more time with Ingie. And I’m making it my mission to show her there’s more to our relationship than friends with benefits.

Ingie

I’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places until I meet up with Ian again. Now I have to conquer my deepest fear—abandonment—or lose the only man who loves me just the way I am.

Preorder your copy now because men like Ian are one of a kind!

Those Goals of Mine!

By: Marcia King-Gamble

www.lovemarcia:com

Visit me on Kindle Vella amazon.com/kindle-vella writing as Sari Smith and Marcia King-Gamble.

When I heard that August was supposed to be the mid-year check-in for all those goals I never set, my initial reaction was to go off topic. I felt I would have little to offer in this area.  Frankly, I am just not one to write down goals on an excel spreadsheet, and hold myself to a deadline. I do not check off  accomplishments. I’m just not wired that way. This girl has  never played by the rules.

Those of you following my posts know I don’t make New Year Resolutions. Instead, I create a vision board. That vision board acts as a reminder and as my map for the year. I apply this same thought process to my writing. Some people find it beneficial to plot out every chapter and detail. They document every high and low, when the middle should sag, and the black moment happen. That’s never worked for me. It takes away from my creative process and my writing simply won’t flow.

Contrary to what every writer has been told, I have never finished a manuscript before submitting. I’m more of a three chapter girl. Back to I never play by the rules.

I proudly own being a seat of the pants writer. There’s something freeing about this writing process.  I like writing what pops into my head. With no structure, I feel less confined. The downside of course is going down several rabbit holes, but what a wonderful feeling to emerge and find light.

Now back to the topic of the progress made on these non-existent goals. For that I  was forced to refer to my 2023 Vision Board and here are the results.

Normally, travel dominates and I am pleased to say that was an easy one. So far this year, I have made it to San Diego twice, New York for a high school reunion, New Orleans for a writers conference, and in October,  I am off to Barcelona, Tunisia, France and Rome. By year end I should have made another trip to the Caribbean.  Check that one off.

Travel also takes care of my “Happy Place.”

Exercise and staying in shape are also featured on my vision board. I’m proud to say I’ve made it to the gym at least three times a week,  and I walk every chance I get.   I am still striving to get to my personal best, though in my heart I am there. Isn't that what matters?

In terms of taking total control of my life, and getting my finances where I want it to be, well ummm, double fail. Two air conditioner failures ( sum total $20,000) set me back financially. I have a two zoned home. A leaking pool pump didn’t help either. On the upside, I am not out on the street.

Putting everything into perspective, at the eight month mark, my ultimate goal has already been realized. I have joy in my life. I can still appreciate the small every day things and not look at setbacks as failures.

That should be everyone's goal  Life happens and joy is a conscious choice.

The Importance of Laughter, Humor, and Showing Joy … by Delsora Lowe

Between winter isolation and the way of the world, it seems there hasn’t been a lot of laughter in our lives. But, if you look closely, you can find joy and humor around every corner. And…we know where that leads. LAUGHTER! Or at the very least some big smiles.
April starts out with a cherished “holiday” in my family. April Fool’s Day was my dad’s favorite. He always played a joke on the family. Not one of those elaborate, heart-stopping, jump out of the closet types of jokes, but a crazy pun or an exaggerated declaration that would always catch us off guard. And have us believing him. He loved his puns and play on words. The joke never lasted long, because he was famous for laughing at his own jokes, before we ever realized his declaration was a joke. Maybe he loved April Fool’s Day, since he was an April baby. So, thinking of laughter and jokes, as I write this, makes me sad that he passed away eleven years ago, right before his ninety-second birthday. Although, now I envision him up in Heaven playing jokes on his twin and two other brothers, and my sister, and my favorite aunt, and my grandparents. And then they’ll all laugh and toast with a shot of Scotch.
But back to earth… In my neck of the woods, April can be the beginning of an early spring, with flowers pushing up through the decomposed leaves I haven’t yet had time to rake off the beds. Or we can have a nor’ easter roar up the coast and dump a foot of snow. At this time of year, snow melts fast, so spring storms are definitely blips on the radar screen. One more thing to laugh at or to feel joy about is that the melting snow, like April showers, brings May flowers.
Springtime is a time of renewal. For the writer in me, it WAS (scratch that) IS (trying to be optimistic) 😊 also a time to look forward to writing conferences where I can renew the well of inspiration. There is nothing like gathering in person to hug your writer friends who you haven’t seen in a year, or learn new writing and marketing skills in a workshop, or dine together with old and new friends, chatting it up about both personal and professional lives.
Alas, that in-person comradery is long overdue, after all the cancelations of the past few years, and more for this spring and summer. But I can remember the joy and laughter and banter from in-person meetings. And with hope on the horizon, I know those, too, will return. This Fall?!?!?

In the meantime, there has been no lack of “gatherings” with ZOOM and Skype and Go-to-Meeting and all the other venues for “in-person” communication. These vehicles might not be the same as in person, but we still have the joy and laughter and learning experiences. Now to look forward to the hugs and dinning together that are missing from the on-line communication.

Remember…LAUGHTER is important, anyway you can get it.

To New Beginnings!

By: Marcia King-Gamble

www.lovemarcia.com

You’ve probably heard me say this before. At the beginning of a new year I never make resolutions. What I do is create a vision board. The board serves as my map as the year unfolds.

There is something cathartic about looking through magazines and finding words that express the way I feel and that represent me. I get joy out of clipping out graphics and images of places that I would like to visit, hobbies that represent me, or events that I enjoy, even things I would like to learn or improve on in the coming year.

It all brings me Joy.

This 2021, my board is still a work in progress. But as I snip and cut out pictures and sayings, I find myself becoming more and more optimistic and hopeful.

For those of you who have followed me over the years, you know there is usually a theme to my board. My boards represent my life with emphasis on travel, exercise, books, wine and food.  All these things bring out the best in me.

These themes continue this year,  but with a focus on joyful living and celebrating small moments. I am hopeful about many things this year and grateful to be here. This year, I plan on brushing up my Spanish. It’s a language that speaks to me and one I used to be fairly good at but have let go to the wayside. Spanish is considered the language of love because its passionate and sensual.  And shouldn’t we be passionate about everything we do? Without passion life wouldn’t be a whole lot of fun.

I am hopeful about many things this year. I am hopeful to put more passion back into my life. I am hopeful that our country can heal, and that people can get back to work and living their best lives. I am hopeful that we can travel again and see family and friends.

More importantly, I am hopeful that we have used this time to reflect and get our priorities in order. Having gone through an experience like no other, we should realize that we are really a small speck in a vast universe. We rent space on this earth. We own nothing. And without health we have nothing.

That said, we should be living our most meaningful lives, no matter how insignificant we think that life might be.

Writing to me represents living my best life.
To that end, I celebrated 2021 with a brand-new release.

Here is an excerpt from By Golly:

Elle felt and sensed Miles’ presence behind her. She could smell that citrusy scent and feel his warm breath on the nape of her neck. Even though her heart thudded, she remained resolute. Miles’s hands caressed the back of her arms before he turned her to face him. Now she didn’t know what to believe.

“Carrie’s divorcing her husband. When she found out Justin was in trouble, she reached out to me, pitching the idea of getting back together, and providing a united front for the sake of our son.”

Elle spun around facing him. “You must have given it some consideration. You broke up with me.”

“I did not. I simply asked for time and space. We were both doing a lot of traveling. I was dealing with a troubled child and an ex pressuring me. Plus, we were in the middle of negotiating an international deal. There was a lot on my plate. I needed to work through some things.”

“Can we talk about Justin?” Elle said, switching the direction of the conversation. Miles had put her through a lot of misery. Had he had this discussion with her up front, perhaps she would be a lot more forgiving.

“Sure. We might as well sit. I have the feeling this might take a while. Taking her by the hand, Miles guided her back toward the couch. “What did my son have to say for himself?”

“Well, it seems he thinks you sent him off to school to get rid of him.”

“Oh, please. Justin knows better. We talked about it. He knows why I sent him to the academy. Couldn’t have a housekeeper bringing up my son.”

“Apparently, you didn’t do a very good job of explaining. He seems to think he’ll be going to live with you and your ex, and you’ll be one big happy family.”

“He’s wrong about that.”

“I did get him to promise me he’d go to therapy.”

Miles’ head snapped back and forth. Hie squinted at her.  “And why would my son need therapy?”

“Because he has problems you and I can’t fix. He’s hurting and doesn’t understanding why you and his mom divorced.” She held up a finger before Miles could interrupt. “It’s quid pro quo. Justin stops getting high and goes to therapy. You don’t send him to rehab. Now all you have to do is talk the principal, head of school, or whatever they’re called these days, into not expelling Justin.”

Miles reached over and took her cheeks between his palms and kissed her on the lips. “If that’s all it would take, you’re a miracle worker.” Before she knew it, he deepened the kiss, and those too familiar feelings came flooding back and she was winding her arms around his neck, relishing his warmth and drowning in the citrusy smell of him.

A knock on the door, drew them apart before things ricocheted out of control and she forgot she was still mad at him.

“What Lousy timing,” Miles muttered, heading off to answer the door.

A Joyful Heart

by Diana McCollum

For the first time ever we can truly say 2020 is behind us! There is a vaccine coming to all of us very soon! With the vaccine, when most people are vaccinated, will come a shift towards life as we knew it before the pandemic. I don’t want to dwell on all the negativity that has been part of all our lives right through today.

Instead, what are we going to do going forward? I have come to appreciate my friends and family so much more. I’m hoping my weekly zoom meetings with family and friends will continue. As I am always uplifted after seeing their faces and hearing their voices. I intend to keep up my daily walks and i always find something new to be thankful for. Sometimes a deer in a neighbor's yard or a bunch of tiny pinecones that fell from a tree. The blue sky and fluffy white clouds, so many things to be thankful for. and so many more things too many to name.

I want to learn new skills. My friend and are holding each other accountable for spending time on writer related things. The book I’m working on will be published in 2021, which is exciting. I’m looking forward to tomorrow and hopeful for a peaceful world. There is some joy in every day. If one can find even that small amount of joy it is uplifting. One thing I enjoy is cooking. I must say during the pandemic I’ve cooked new deserts more often than healthy meals. That is one thing I am changing.

Holiday Romances – Part Two (*) ...Delsora Lowe

Stories have taken me away from all the stresses of the world this holiday season.

I did download way too many holiday books this year, so I’ve also listed the ones I won’t get to until after this blog posts. As you can see, I plan to hibernate and bury my head in —no— not sand, but romance books until 2021 ushers its way in. And yes, too many books to read, so while the snow flies in January, February, and March, I’ll still be reading holiday stories as I edit my own Christmas story for next season.

I wish everyone a safe and joyful holiday season, even if it means spending time with family and friends on ZOOM…or whatever media you plan to use.

I’ll see you in January 2021 with prayers and wishes for a MUCH better year! Hope is on the horizon in so many ways. So, keep your hearts open to the joys of the season, and your minds occupied in whatever way brings you peace and happiness. For me, it is keeping in touch with family and friends and writing groups, and watching uplifting movies and reading books filled with love, joy, hope, and the holiday spirit.

Whatever holidays you celebrate, I send you and your loved ones peace, joy, optimism, courage, love, and good health. And...raise a glass of eggnog.

Books Read This Month – * see November 17 blog for another list of holiday books.

An Aspen Ridge Christmas by Jill Haymaker (Oct 2020) An unrequited romance finally blooms between a sixty-years plus couple. A sweet story where two who have never been married finally find their happily-ever-after together—proving it’s never too late to find love.

A Very Nantucket Christmas by Nancy Thayer (2015) Two books in one. The first is a second chance for a seasoned couple as they celebrate their first Christmas as a married couple. A little family interference among the stress of planning a perfect first Christmas with a new love, plus a sweet little boy and a lost puppy, add drama to the sweet story. I’m saving the second story until after I read my long list of books.

Harmony’s Embrace by Amber Daulton (2020) One of The Wild Rose Press Deerbourne Inn series, this story unites high school sweethearts, who have both had traumatic relationships. Throw in a bit of suspense, two cute kids, and a good dose of lust, two people who were set on going in opposite directions, realize they are right where they need to be.

Mistletoe and Moonglow by Deborah Garner An old-fashioned Christmas that brings a mixture of people, each with their own story, to a small inn. A sweet story with holiday detail and delicious food that will make you feel like you are a part of the story. This is more of a woman’s fiction with hints of romance to come.

A Convenient Christmas Proposal by CJ Carmichael A tragic accident brings together the officer who answered the call and the uncle of the children left without a father. Together they bring back the joy of Christmas for the children and as a result, their own hearts melt as they learn to accept the joy of the holidays and family.

Time After Time by Melody Grace (2020) Unrequited teen love gets a second chance for a single mom and powerful business man who has fallen from the ranks of the successful. Throw in a big family with patriarch grandfather, a town of busybodies, and friends who can’t help matchmaking, and you have a happily-ever-after that ends at the raucous Thanksgiving table. This is a stand-alone, but part of a series that each highlight one of the couples who make repeat appearances in each book.

His Holiday Prayer (Hearts of Oklahoma) by Tina Radcliffe (Dec 2020) Two best friends since college and now business partners at a Veterinarians clinic in small town Oklahoma, finally admit they belong together. A sweet, inspirational, small-town book 3 in a family-filled Oklahoma ranching series.

Secret-Santa Cowboy by Vicki Lewis Thompson Book 6 of The Buckskin Brotherhood series – a fun, light-hearted, sexy series with a cast of quirky characters, strong heroines, and cowboys who meet their match. Each a stand-alone, but each does have the same cast of characters, highlighting the love story of one Buckskin “Brother” in each book.

The Convenient Christmas Date by Barbara Wallace (November 2019) An ex-footballer with a sullied reputation hooks up with an heiress who is not taken seriously in her family business for a fake relationship to restore both their reputations. Christmas turns out to be what they each least expect, as they each bring both strengths and emotional baggage to counterbalance the other. A phony relationship turns into a match made for the holidays.

Mistletoe in Paradise (The Wildstone Series) by Jill Shalvis (Dec 2020) Two friends since grade school, meet again years after a quick affair. Both have issues to resolve, and with the help of their long-ago best friend, they are able to overcome and learn to love again. The heat from sailing on a yacht in the Caribbean is not the only heat in this Christmas time novella.

The Remaking of Corbin Wale by Roan Parrish (2017) An angsty M/M story filled with beautiful imagery, description, and riveting, heart and soul, relationship building as each character comes into their own during the Thanksgiving into Chanukah season.

Cowgirl Christmas by Donna Alward (2020) The heavy weight of responsibility is on the heroine rancher as she tries to take care of her ailing grandmother and help her single-mom sister, all while keeping the ranch afloat. Volunteering to cook Christmas dinner, she has no clue how to do it. But high school classmate and celebrity chef moves back to town and volunteers to give her cooking lessons, sparks fly. And not only with the burnt puff pastry appetizers.

Sweet Adventure (The Klaus Brothers series) by Penny Watson (2014) An adventurous and magical journey to the north pole to spend time with one of the BIG GUY’s sons, where the heroine recovers her soul, the hero finds his calling, and both find love with their soul mates.

Christmas at Saltwater Cove by Amelia Adler (October 2020)
A Tree, Mistletoe & A Sunset (A Swan Harbor Story) by Sophie Bartow (2020)
