Dissecting a Book by Paty Jager

This month at Romancing the Genres we are writing about what we like and don't like in a book.

The books that catch my attention and draw me in are ones that have engaging characters either the main characters or secondary. I have to like and want to be in the company of these characters throughout the length of the book or story. Nora Roberts and LaVyrle Spencer were the first romance authors I read that pulled me in with their characters. I loved and still love the Irish Sister Trilogy  Born in Fire, Born in Ice, Born in Shame. Not only did the characters pull me in, but the setting (Ireland) captivated me. With LaVyrle Spencer her characters were real with real life problems. That's the type of historical and contemporary books I like to write.

An intriguing plot will also draw me in. I just purchased a book because an excerpt that was posted on Facebook had the character traveling to an area near me where I've been. I wanted to see just how much of this area would be used in the book and it helped that the title was The Archaeologist and the Spirit Catchers by Randy Brown. Yes, the spirits piqued my attention. I wondered if it would be Native American spirits or... So far it doesn't appear to be Native American spirits but the characters have kept me reading. They are unique in their heritage of "discovering trapped spirits and setting them free".

The other thing that will keep me reading a book is learning something. A different culture, a historical occurrence,  or a good mystery that I want to discover how it is solved.

What I don't care for in a book are flat characters or over the top characters. If they are paranormal I still want to see the humanity in them or a sense of humor. Something that makes me think of them as personable.  I also and this is just my opinion- I don't like alpha main characters. I think it comes from being pushed around by my father who wanted to prove he was alpha. I don't like that in a hero. But again, it is my preference. Others LOVE them.

My other stop reading flag is if I encounter more than three instances of wrong facts. Calling the withers on a horse the fetlock, the wrong Indian tribe or anything that I know is wrong. The instance of using shoot for chute in a contemporary western. Those little things will cause me to not finish reading the book and not trust another book from the same author. Typos if there are only a few in the whole book don't bother me. If there are more than two per chapter, I get annoyed that they didn't make sure it was their best effort and will stop reading.

That's about all I can think of that for my likes and dislikes when I read a book.

Book 2, Love Me Anyway, of the Tumbling Creek Ranch series is available by pre-order and will release this Thursday and starting July 9th, book 1, 8 Seconds to Love, in the series will be only $0.99 for the month to celebrate the release of Love Me Anyway.

Seven Year Itch by Paty Jager

I am proud to be a part of this wonderful blog put together by our blog queens- Judith Ashley and Sarah Raplee. I was one of the first bloggers and was honored when they asked me to join. Over the years there have been some great posts from awesome writers, our monthly contributors and spectacular guest bloggers the blog queens have rustled up.

To commemorate the 7 years this blog has been in existence, the topic this month is to blog about something that has happened to me in the last 7 years.

What hasn’t!

It was 7 years ago that I took the Indie Author plunge. I had 10 books published with a small press when other writer friends started suggesting and pushing me toward an Indie career. At first, I was scared and dubious I could handle all the hats it takes to be an Indie Author. But gradually, I came to cherish the ability to put books out when I wanted, get book covers I loved, and to price books and have sales how I wanted.
With Indie publishing comes deadlines, publishing, marketing, and the ever-present social media.
Some days there doesn’t seem to be enough hours in the day. I want to make my word count, get a book ready to publish, and market. And while I’m doing this I’m also managing a household and helping with the ranching.

Even though I’m behind already this year with my projected books and releases, I wouldn’t change a thing about the path I’ve taken to be a published author. I now have 32 books, 8 novellas, and a dozen short stories published. I enjoy writing my Shandra Higheagle Mystery series, collaborating with other authors in box sets, and coming the end of this year, a shared world series.

I’ll have the first e-novella of my Tumbling Creek Ranch series, a contemporary western romance to give to one person who leaves a comment. What has been a big event in your life the last 7 years?

Goals and Milestones, Oh My! by Paty Jager

As I start the new year, I have already set my writing goals. My hubby believes I'll be a mental case by the end of 2018, but I believe, because I am excited about all of the series I'm writing and will start, that I will be having a blast, rather than fretting. But time will tell!

Barring any huge family crisis, I believe I have factored in a doable daily word count to make my goals achievable. If I write 3,000-5,000 words 6 days a week and I've factored in a week a month not writing, I should be able to easily write 3 Shandra Higheagle Mysteries, 1 Silver Dollar Saloon, 3 Tumbling Creek Ranch novellas, AND get 2 books written for the new mystery series I'll roll out in 2019.

Remember I said the excitement factor? I LOVE writing the Shandra books and "spoiler alert" the books this year are leading up to Ryan and Shandra wedding -which may or may not happen. ;) I know I've been torturing my readers, but it keeps them coming back for more mysteries.

I am having a lot of fun writing the Tumbling Creek Ranch contemporary western series that has been premiering in box sets. These 45,000 word stories are fun because I don't have to do as much research as I have lived a similar lifestyle (horses, dogs, cattle) so it is fun to put myself in my character's shoes on a dude ranch.

The Silver Dollar Saloon books require some historical research, but I LOVE the setting and the ongoing characters I set up in this series. Lottie Mae, the next book coming out in May, will be a fun read.

And last.... I am sooooo excited to start another mystery series with Game Warden Gabriel Hawke. I have been slowly discovering the character and the realm of his work and his heritage. He had a Nez Perce father and a Walla Walla mother. He grew up in Lapwai and finsihed school in Pendleton, Oregon. He later went on to become a State Police Trooper and finally the Game Warden in his family's homeland of the Wallowas.

Those are my goals for the coming year.

Milestones!
I now have over 30 books published!! 31 to be exact.
I have 4 audio books out. Starting on #5 in January.
I have 6 novellas and I a dozen short stories published.

I am beyond humbled that people who read my books like them enough to go out and purchase another one. Thank you all and have a healthy and happy New Year!
