From Scandinavia and the Baltic with Love!

By: Marcia King-Gamble

I’m deviating from this month’s theme, Masks, to tell you a little about my vacation. Why? Because this was one special vacation for me. The Scandinavian countries and Russia have always been on my non-bucket list (I don’t plan on ever dying.) So when a cruise opportunity presented itself, I jumped on it, and a good thing I did. Every single minute of every single day was a melding of both fun and history.

I flew into Copenhagen and spent the night at this wonderful waterfront hotel, The Admiral. What made this city even more special was meeting up with an Internet friend of 10 years; a now retired doctor. Christian gave us a personal tour of this city he grew up in.   We got to see the famous Little Mermaid, the Amalienborg Palace, home to the Danish Royal family.  I got to take pictures next to a guard but I got the cold eye and could only get so close. We  missed Tivoli Gardens  because parking was   non-existent,  so the decision was to skip it and move on to dinner.

Copenhagen is truly an enchanting city and I would have liked to have spent more time there.  But boarding the ship was the true start of my adventures.

Next day we headed off tor Rostock, Germany. Rockstock is approximately 2-3 hours outside of Berlin. The last time I visited Berlin, the wall was up. An especially poignant memory is chatting with a man who had escaped, but came to the wall every day to see his wife and children.  Now Berlin has turned into a big urban city. There are huge high rises and malls, and the city has lost some of its charm.  I did get to see the Olympic stadium built from 1934-1936, and the Holocaust memorial, interestingly set smack in the middle of the city. And I got to see what was left of the wall and that stirred up some memories.

After a six hour journey traveling back and forth to the ship (not counting the time seeing the sights,) a day at sea was welcomed.   Then it was onto Tallin, Estonia and the rain.

Old Town, Tallin is adorable with charming cobblestone streets filled with restaurants and boutiques. Despite the rain, we were able to fit in coffee and shopping.  A highlight of the day was finding a great shoe store where the designer makes one of a kind shoes, and only one in each size. I am now the proud owner of two pairs of size 10 shoes and no one else owns a similar pair in size 10 in the entire world.

Onto St. Petersburg, Russia we went. And yes the two days there were chilly. There are 32 days of sun a year in this lovely city that is often called Venice of the North. But brrr it was cold!  Even so, we were able to enjoy two days on the water- one on a hydrofoil.  I even rode the subway (see pic of subway below). We saw Catherine’s Palace and the Hermitage. Lunches both days were of the Russian kind and lunch wouldn’t be lunch without vodka served . Here I am with this cute Russian lady who graciously allowed me to take her picture. See below.

Next stop, Helsinki, a charming little waterfront town with lots of shopping opportunities, and the most delightful people you will come across.  I got to witness a parade, visit a used book store, and do some serious spending damage at the market place, but hey my holiday presents are almost all bought.

Stockholm, Sweden, the next day, was a cool experience and well worth the $40.00 cab ride when we almost missed the ship. The antipasto (that delayed us) was delicious, and the vodka tasting at an ice bar exceptional. The chuckle found on a billboard in front of a restaurant made me realize the Swedes really are droll. This is not my political commentary. I'm  just sharing some humor, so go easy on me.

Would I do it again? Absolutely, but next time the itinerary needs to include Moscow.
Visit me on Facebook here     http://bit.ly/2cz5Zu5    I'd like some new friends.

People to See and Places to go!

Places to go! People to See!

Thanks to several years spent in the travel industry with airlines and cruise lines, there are way too many favorite places to mention. The ones I have mentioned hold special memories for me, and even now the travel bug  bites.

Those following my posts know I was fortunate enough to join the late, great Pan Am right out of college. I flew for two years then went into management.  It was a young woman’s dream being able to get on and off  planes and see sights I could never afford on my own. Travel has been the best finishing school ever.  It taught me about, food, wine and different cultures. To this day most of my disposable income goes to the mandatory trip or two.

Top of my favorite list is New Zealand, but that’s already been done by the very fortunate author, Bronwen Evans, who happens to live there.  It truly is a special place, and while it’s been a few years, I still recall the gorgeous water views, the exotic landscaping,  and the charming Tudor homes.  I would move there in a Northeast minute. The restaurants in Auckland serve the best New Zealand lamb I’ve ever had and it’s not uncommon for a total stranger to visit your table as you're dining. No agenda,  they just want to say  “hi.”

Hong Kong is another city high on my list. It’s a magical place with a lot going on.  It’s the fashion capital of the world and the place you can still pick up some reasonably priced pearls and custom tailored clothing . An evening out on the town is a memorable experience. I’ve heard some of the most talented rock and R&B bands there.  Restaurants cater to every mood and palate.   But that’s not all Hong Kong offers, if you’re looking to spend a day of sun, fun and relaxation, there are several beaches to choose from on both Hong Kong and Kowloon. No one should miss the sunset harbor cruise

.

As you can tell,  I'm a huge fan of Asia. Another favorite city is Bangkok. There are some really cool hotels there, and if you're into being pampered this is the place to be. Spend a half a day at a spa for a massage, pedicure, manicure, and hot oil treatment, all for a fraction of what you would pay in the USA.

One of my favorite purchases is still a brass noodle vendor stand.  Back then they were $15.00,  not so any more, but still reasonable. The piece makes for a unique place to hold soaps, shampoos or wash cloths, though some friends have turned them into mini-bars.

Venice is another wonderful treasure and a place you shouldn’t miss. It is perhaps one of the most romantic cities in the world and the most mysterious. The hotels are expensive, but the food is mouthwatering good.

If you’re  an adventurous sort and don’t mind taking a 20 minute Vaporetto ride, then go to Lido where less expensive hotels are. Lido was once known for its famous brothels.  It’s a beach community with charming villas where you can stay without breaking the bank.

Near and dear to my heart is the island I was born on – St. Vincent.  I always knew it was beautiful and a special place, but now having visited most of the world, I have come to appreciate it even more. My island paradise (all of 150 sq. miles,) has so much to offer. No wonder the Grenadines (owned by the mainland) have become the “It place” for so many of the rich and famous.

Here’s where Kate Middleton and Prince William stay when visiting Mustique.

To sum up, there are  many more beautiful places waiting to be explored, but in the interest of time , I will save them for another day. Here  in the USA my go to place is the Jersey Shore which is the setting of my  recent book... Monmouth Beach,  New Jersey rocks!

Like me on Facebook and escape to an exotic place with one of my books!
