Worst Vacation Ever By Kathy Coatney

This month’s theme for Romancing The Genres is the worst shopping trip ever. Since I'm not much of a shopper, and I absolutely adore shopping online, I decided to share my worst vacation ever.

When our children were young back in the late 80s, four and seven, we had friends with kids that were the same age. They invited us to their cabin on a private lake. We were excited and left early on a Saturday morning for a three-day weekend. It was about an hour from our home. We parked and hiked in about half a mile, arriving midmorning, then began unpacking. The kids were crazy excited and raced into the bedroom to play.

Not five minutes later, a howl came from the bedroom. I raced in to find our four-year-old had jammed his knee into his eye. It was quickly swelling, and turning purple and black. Fortunately, it wasn't serious enough for an ER visit. After a few hugs and kisses, he was back on track and playing with the rest of the kids.

We finished unpacking and went out for a hike. In my memory, the hill we climbed was almost vertical, but in retrospect, I doubt it was really much of a hill. We hiked to the top, then started back down. We’d barely gone fifty feet when our youngest tripped and fell, rolling down the hill before we could grab him. He came up covered in scratches and blood, but again, nothing serious enough for an ER visit. We cleaned him up, put on Band-Aids where needed, and he was off playing again.

We had dinner and everyone was exhausted, so we headed to bed early. I’d been asleep about an hour when I suddenly had to rush out to the outhouse with the worst case of diarrhea I'd ever experienced. I came out to find our oldest son with the same issues. We spent the night in and out of the outhouse. By morning I was exhausted and ready to go home, even though we’d planed on staying another day.

We began packing and our friends offered to let the boys stay with them, but my husband and I felt like we wanted everybody home as we weren't sure what catastrophe would happen in our absence.

This was one of those vacations where you never want to repeat it, but at the same time, it becomes something we laugh about on a regular basis. These are the memories I use when I'm writing to bring humor into my stories. I feel it’s essential since I tend to deal with heavier topics.

In my first book, Falling For You…Again the couple lost their 14-year-old daughter in a boating accident two years before the book began. I interspersed humor in that story often to deal with the heavier topics.

In my latest book, Falling in Love With Her, book 5 in The Murphy Clan—Falling in Love Series, I used humor throughout the book as my heroine, Ingie Pulaski, was abandoned by her mother at a young age. This meant she had heavy issues to contend with, so I used levity to soften her pain. I also had the Trench Coat Brigade on hand to add humorous moments to the book. What you'll find in almost all of my books is a serious topic infused with laughter to provides heartwarming prose and a happily-ever-after that will leaves the reader smiling and happy at the end of the book.

Do you like humor your books?

Falling in Love With Her is available now.

A LEFT AT THE ALTAR, FRIENDS TO LOVERS, BROTHER’S BEST FRIEND, AFRAID TO COMMIT, DESTINED TO BE TOGETHER, ROMANTIC MYSTERY NOT TO BE MISSED!

Ingie

Love, marriage, and a family aren’t in the cards for me after my fiancĂ© left me at the altar. I was so certain he loved me, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. My mother’s words haunt me. “She’s an ugly duckling. She’ll never attract a man. A husband and family aren’t in her future.” Instead of dwelling on the past, I focus on running Three Rivers Fly Shop and Boat Repair, the legacy from my father.

Two years later, Ian Callahan, my brother’s best friend and my childhood heartthrob, returns home. Certain he’ll never see the swan lurking beneath the ugly duckling, the same as when we were teenagers, I protect my heart by insisting on a friends with benefits relationship. The fact is, I don’t need love. I have my work, a persnickety, one-eyed cat, and keeping the Trench Coat Brigade in line—a wacky group of seniors with a penchant for meddling, matchmaking, and mystery-solving.

Ian

After my last relationship crashed and burned, I left my job as an arson investigator and firefighter in Seattle to return home. Ready to settle down, my hometown is the only place I want to put down roots. And the only woman I want to make a life with is Ingie Pulaski. She’s smart, sassy, and fearless, but she wants a causal relationship

When a building is torched and a body is found, I find myself keeping tabs on the Trench Coat Brigade to ensure they stay out of trouble. But there’s an added benefit to that assignment—I’m spending a lot more time with Ingie. And I’m making it my mission to show her there’s more to our relationship than friends with benefits.

Ingie

I’ve been looking for love in all the wrong places until I meet up with Ian again. Now I have to conquer my deepest fear—abandonment—or lose the only man who loves me just the way I am.

Finding Joy By Kathy Coatney

The theme for Romancing the Genres this month is dreams and goals. My main goal for 2023 is searching for joy. When I first thought about what brings me joy, I drew a blank. I'm one of those people who doesn’t do well being put on the spot with a question. I need time to process it. And it took me a few minutes before my brain kicked in, but the first joy that came to me were the children in my life.

Is there anything more precious than a baby's first smile, a toddler’s belly laugh, a five-year-old’s first time riding a bike without training wheels, or an eight-year-old’s wonder at nature? Those were all things that gave me immense joy as I watched my grandchildren progress through these milestones this year. And it happens so fast. One minute they’re babies, and the next they’re in grade school. I’ve spent time absorbing and enjoying these moments because they go by in the blink of an eye.

I also find joy spending time with my husband, my sons and their families, extended family, and friends. But beyond that I still find incredible joy whenever it snows. The crisp, clean snow, and the utter silence that fills the landscape. I love cross-country skiing, and in particular, fresh snow clinging to the pine trees. And then there’s spring in central Oregon that's mostly like winter just less snow. Spring actually arrives in mid-June when the rhododendrons are bursting with color and the lavenders in full bloom. I find joy in the fresh scent of pine when we mountain bike or hike in the woods with the birds singing around us or a squirrel zipping up a tree.

As I find the joy in my life, it ends up in my books as well. Since I write contemporary romance, I have babies and young children in my stories more frequently these days than I used to. I think that's because I was only exposed to older children until my grandchildren began arriving. Now that I have young children in my life, it gives me plenty of inspiration for my writing.

I also like to incorporate the beauty of nature in my writing. Book five in the Falling in Love Series, Falling in Love With Her is up for preorder, and it’s set in Paradise Falls, Idaho, on Lake Serenity. I absolutely love the abundance of wildlife, thick forests, and babies and toddlers in this series. Every time I write about Paradise Falls and the characters residing there, I’m overcome with happiness, and I can’t wait to bring it to life for my readers.

         What gives you joy?

Falling in Love With Her releases September 5, 2023, but it’s available for preorder now.

Setting Goals to Propel My Writing to the Next Level by Kathy Coatney

FALLING IN LOVE SERIES
When I was offered the opportunity to write this blog for Romancing the Genres about taking my writing to the next level, it came just as I was investing some real time into marketing my books on Facebook (FB).

I have limited fiction writing time because I’m also a freelance photojournalist/editor. I write at least three articles a month and edit three different magazines, so I’m not an author who can write three or four books a year. Two is the best I can do.

I seriously considered hiring someone to do FB ads for me, but one thing kept stopping me. No one knows and loves my books as much as I do, so who better than me to write the ad copy? And if I can do that, I’ll have much better success with my ads, and improve my writing.

So, I’ve decided to give up some fiction writing time for the next 30 days to buckle down and learn how to market the books that are already published. To that end, I’ve committed myself to learning the ins and outs of FB ads. I have set aside time to work on my ads every day, which not only includes writing ads, but searching for new and better audiences, learning the jargon and the different ways to determine if my ads are successful. I feel this is critically important to moving my career to the next level.

There are several steps to FB ads from learning how to maneuver in business ads manager to becoming comfortable with all the steps in creating an ad. My first ad took two days to put together! The second ten minutes, so huge progress there.

THE CROOKED HALO CHRONICLES
Another big step is the ad copy. I needed snippets, headlines, and call to action. Fortunately, I took a blurb class last winter from Kathryn Jane (I highly recommend this class). I spent a lot of time developing new blurbs for all five of my books, worked on call to action, headline and snippets, which gave me enough to get my first ads up and running, but I will also have work on more because, what I’m learning is, you have to keep changing and tweaking your ad copy.

To date, I have managed to put seven ads together, I’ve paused the first three, and I currently have four others running, but I will be pausing another one soon. While the cost per click is in a good range, and I’m getting lots of clicks, I’m worried the photo may misrepresent my book.  Here is the link to the ad. https://fb.me/27qrinMXi6GMOxW

This ad is doing pretty well for me, too.
I will be keeping it because this photo very closely represents my story and my main character. I will be tweaking the photo on this ad as I want to change the look of the book cover on it.

Here are the two new ads I have out.

SHE'S OUT OF HIS LEAGUE
I’m testing these ads with different audiences, text, and photos. If you look close, you’ll see the man laying in the grass is the same model from a previous ad with my book cover on it.

It’s still too early to tell if these ads are successful, but early indications have shown they are at least doing okay. I will keep developing new ads, so that when these aren’t successful, they will be replaced. If you’re like me you’re probably saying, yeah, yeah, I agree with you, but I just don’t want to take time away from my writing, or it’s just too hard and I can’t figure it out.

I used those excuses for the last two years, but it occurred to me that if I want to be a successful, independently published author, I have to learn how to market my books or I will be doomed to write more and more books, faster and faster until I burn myself out.

I don’t want to lose the pleasure of writing my books so I’m determined to learn this. I also believe that just like I had to learn about POV and telling versus showing, that seemed oh so complicated all those years ago, I will learn how to do these ads. I have to.

LEAVE ME BREATHLESS
Before I sign off, just a little bit about my books. I write deeply emotional, small town, romances. I have a three book series out, Falling For You…Again, Falling in Love With You, Falling in Love for the First Time.

I also have She’s Out of His League that is a stand alone at the moment, but I have two more books in the series that will be released shortly.

Leave Me Breathless is a romantic mystery, and I will have more books to follow in that series, too.

I also have a short story series, The Crooked Halo Chronicles, that I will be developing into a full series that has love, romance, and guardian angels.

You can get Angels R Us for free just for subscribing to my newsletter.

Thank you all. It was lovely spending time with you. I look forward to meeting up with you on FB, TW, and kathycoatney.com.

TRANSITIONS by Kathy Coatney

Thank you Sarah and Judith for having me on Romancing the Genres.  Some of you may remember my past blogs were written as Kate Curran.
Before
I am making several transitions as a writer this year. First is the name change. The reason I chose to use a pen name was because I also write children’s nonfiction picture books under Kathy Coatney. It made sense in 2014 when I released my first romance to take a pen name.
What I have discovered in the four years since that first release is that it is double the work to have two names because I have to market both names. So I decided in November of 2017 to go to just one name Kathy Coatney with the idea being it will streamline all my marketing and give me more time to write. This HAS NOT been the case to date, but I believe it will be shortly.
So, to make a long story short, instead of seeing Kate Curran for my contemporary romances, you will now be seeing Kathy Coatney. It will be the same fiction, just under a different name. And if you’ve liked my Facebook page, you’ll see it listed under Kathy Coatney as well. So that’s the explanation about the new name.
After
Next up—exciting news about the new year. I will be releasing a full series in January, February, and March. This is another transition I’m making as a writer since book two has been finished for several months. Instead of releasing it immediately, I decided to finish book three and release them back-to-back to give readers the opportunity to read them immediately rather than wait six months in between each book.
Granted this makes for a long stretch between releases since I can only get out two books a year with working fulltime as a photojournalist, but I’m hoping readers will enjoy having a full series ready and waiting for them. Only time will tell.

On to the new series. The Falling In Love series are love stories told in reverse all set in the small town of Paradise Falls, Idaho. Book One, Falling In Love…Again is the story of Clare and Ethan Burke. The couple carved out a life in Paradise Falls, Idaho. While Clare built a career as an outdoor photographer, Ethan taught eighth-grade. They raised three children and had a happily-ever-after life until tragedy struck, and they lost their teenage daughter in a boating accident.
Two years later, Clare and Ethan still love each other, but their grief has pushed them to the brink of divorce. When Clare leaves for a photo shoot into the mountains and doesn’t return, what really matters becomes clear. And with a blizzard looming, Ethan must move heaven and earth to find her.
Book Two,  Falling in Love With You, is the story of three best friends from childhood, Jon Sullivan, Abby O’Hara, and Noah Murphy. They built a friendship that survived the test of time—through childhood, marriage and loss.
Noah always loved Abby, but Abby only had eyes for Jon—except Jon never loved her. Then Jon is diagnosed with ALS, and Abby convinces Jon her love is strong enough for both of them. After fifteen years of marriage, Abby discovers her love for Jon was only infatuation. Noah always owned her heart. Jon’s final request to Noah—"Confess to Abby that you’ve always loved her and give her the life she was meant to have."
But before Noah can profess his love, disaster strikes, and Noah fears he will never get the chance to fulfill his promise to Jon.
Available on 2/2/2018
Book Three, Falling in Love for the First Time, is about the boy next door. Maggie Murphy is Noah’s sister from book two and she falls in love with the boy next door, Daniel Gregorio, a medic in the military. Maggie is a nurse at the World Health Center. They fall in love, marry and have a picture-perfect life until Daniel’s brother dies, his PTSD intensifies and their marriage collapses.

Available on March 2, 2018

All through January I will be sharing excerpts and having special offers on Book One.  I will be posting in my Facebook group, Kathy Coatney's The Beauty Bowl and in my newsletter. Come join my Facebook group and sign up for my newsletter to keep up with what’s new and help me ring in 2018 with the Falling in Love seriesKathy
