Au Revoir

by Madelle Morgan

After seven years as a Genre-ista with the second Tuesday of every month slot on the Romancing the Genres blog, this will be my last regular post.

Over those seven years I shared my journey as I developed the craft of writing romance, ventured into indie publishing, and learned about marketing.

Before I explain why I am hanging up my hat, here’s a brief summary of my writing and publishing efforts.

Diamond Lust, my first novel, was published by Ellora’s Cave in 2010. Although EC mostly published erotica, I will always be grateful that they took a chance on a new author and published my romantic suspense. That’s when I learned the value of a good editor! When I got the rights back, I indie-published it as Diamond Hunter in 2015 in digital and print formats.

I was on a (slow) roll. I indie-published two contemporary romances in the Hollywood in Muskoka series: Caught on Camera in 2016 and Seduced by the Screenwriter in 2017.

Obviously I am a slow writer. A book a year. In this digital era, an indie author needs to invest a lot of time and money to build a backlist and a fan base in order to ultimately sell thousands of low-priced ebooks.
Prose and Cons

To create a novel that meets traditional publishing standards, indie-published authors invest in expensive professional editing, covers, and formatting for print and digital formats. At least I did.

Audiobooks and translation are expensive options to enable authors to reach more buyers. Those costs were out of my reach.

Some authors spend thousands per year on marketing and promotion: Amazon, Twitter and Facebook ads, promo in e-newsletters such as Bookbub, and virtual assistants to organize and schedule it all. At the same time there is huge pressure to discount the books or offer the first in a series free.

To be blunt, an author who writes as slowly as I do can burn through a lot of money without significant return on that investment of time and money.

Best-selling authors aside, some traditionally and indie-published midlist authors do make a decent return on their time and monetary investment. They have multiple new releases a year plus a backlist, a fan base that buys every new release, and a winning advertising strategy, all vital to gain Amazon algorithm traction, ranking, visibility, and sales.

But what about authors who don't have deep pockets and multiple annual releases? I've heard of several midlist authors who could formerly earn their living from book sales but were dropped by their publishers and are now working at regular jobs to pay the bills.

Bottom line, my book sales do not come anywhere near paying for desired extras such as travel at this stage of my life as a "60 is the new 50" senior.

I was in the midst of planning Hollywood Hero, Book 3 of the Hollywood in Muskoka series, and then…

My Therapy Practice Took Off in 2018

Bowen Therapy is a gentle holistic bodywork, but people keep their clothes on. I discovered it in 2012 after 20 years of trying various ineffective therapies for long term back pain caused by a fall that misaligned my pelvis. I'm a retired civil engineer, and my structural engineering knowledge (tension/ compression/ torsion, etc.) and own skeletal alignment issues led me to become a certified practitioner and then take advanced training in order to specialize in musculo-skeletal alignment. Now that I am pain-free, it is very satisfying to eliminate eliminate back, neck and joint pain in clients who, like me, "tried everything" before finding Bowen Therapy.

Last year I reached a tipping point. Referrals from clients took off exponentially and I’ve been booked solid four days a week since. It’s rather exhausting to be so busy. I’m no spring chicken! But it’s worth it because my travel fund is growing.

Unfortunately my practice leaves me with too many commitments and not enough time. Something has to give…

Therefore I’m reluctantly hanging up my Genre-ista hat. From the bottom of my heart I thank Judith and Sarah who have worked so hard for many years to give me and other authors a platform.

Much love to Judith, Sarah, the Genre-istas and readers of this blog.

A Cinderella Wedding Romance with a Twist

by Madelle Morgan

New Adult romantic comedy Caught on Camera is the first in my “Upstairs-Downstairs” romance series. The premise – “Hollywood in cottage country” – is that Hollywood A-listers fall in love with local service providers in Muskoka, a beautiful lake district.

Caught on Camera, Book 1, has a Cinderella theme. However in this wedding romance it’s the stand-in bridesmaid who gets the make-over.

Backcover Blurb

To achieve her dream of working on Hollywood film sets, star struck chambermaid Rachel Lehmann needs $35,000 for film school tuition by the end of the summer. When she’s asked to fill in for a missing bridesmaid at a movie star’s wedding, it’s her big chance to take candid photos of celebrities and sell them to the entertainment gossip magazines. Then groomsman Mickey McNichol, agent to the stars, sweeps her off her feet.

Mickey’s bitter experience is that everyone in show business fakes emotions. When he falls for the stand-in bridesmaid, he thinks he’s finally met a beautiful woman he can trust. But if Rachel betrays his friends’ privacy, Mickey will ensure she never works in Hollywood.

Excerpt

Rachel bit her bottom lip as she regarded her reflection in the Bridal Suite’s floor-length mirror. An awed part of her brain struggled to accept the extraordinary image of herself barefoot and clad in an exquisite pale-lilac strapless, tea-length chiffon dress with fitted bodice.

The practical part fretted about falling behind schedule. She kept one eye on the digital bedside clock and the other on the ball of white fur rolling over her chambermaid uniform on the unmade bed.

“I need to call the housekeeper, Ms. Kane. I have rooms to clean.”

“Wanda will take care of that,” the bride-to-be said airily. She turned to her personal assistant. “Inform the hotel manager that I need Rachel until Sunday.”

“Right away.” The PA bolted for the exit.

“We booked the entire hotel for the wedding,” assured the tall, slender woman with a medley of blond highlights in waist-length hair. “What the bride wants, the bride gets. Relax and show me a few smiles. Mouth open. Mouth closed. You know the drill.”

“Drill?”

“Your smile for the wedding photos. I need to approve it.” She grabbed Rachel’s bare shoulders and twisted her around for a close-up.

“Photos?” Rachel squeaked. Her heart leaped to her throat. With her beyond-ordinary face and small boobs, she’d stand out among all the beautiful people and not in a good way. “You don’t want me in your wedding photos, surely?”

Ignoring her protest, Ms. Kane tapped a scarlet, French-tipped nail against her perfect chin. “Mouth closed, I think. Yes, a sweet but sexy smile puts the focus on your big brown eyes.”

“Ms. Kane?” Rachel burbled, an embarrassed flush warming her cheeks. “I’m not pretty enough for celebrity photos. I belong behind the camera, not in front of it. You need to find someone else—”

As Rachel gestured at the mirror, she caught sight of the tiny white dog on the bed behind them. Its devilish black eyes stared straight at Rachel’s backside. To her horror, she noticed a dark stain spreading out from under its butt and over her uniform.

“Oh my gods. Your dog just urinated on the bed!”

“Did she?” With Ms. Kane’s good humor restored, she merely glanced at her pet sitting innocently beside a puddle rapidly disappearing through Rachel’s uniform into the eight-hundred-thread-count Egyptian-cotton duvet cover.

“Naughty Mopette,” she cooed. “It’s Wanda’s fault. She’s supposed to walk you every four hours. The maid will clean it up.”

I’m the maid!”

“Not anymore you’re not. This weekend you’re my bridesmaid. A distant cousin on my mother’s side from…from…”

“Toronto,” Rachel supplied.

“Right, Toronto, Canada. Where they have that international film festival.”

“And the largest city in Canada,” Rachel added dryly.

“So it’s settled.”

“But”—Rachel flung an arm toward the mirror—“look at us,” she wailed. “Standing beside you I’m…I’m the beautiful princess’s ugly stepsister.”

“Not stepsister,” Ms. Kane scolded, wagging a slender, elegant forefinger. “Cousin, remember? And give me some credit for the ability to make you presentable. You must know that I was a model before I launched Candy Kane Cosmetics? It’s my business to transform women’s faces into the best they can be. A skillful application of makeup, and you won’t recognize yourself.”

Rachel heaved a tremulous breath, then another. She’d viewed hundreds if not thousands of films, so she knew all about the magical transformation that actors underwent in a makeup artist’s chair. All eyes would be on the bride anyway, right?

I’ll merely be a secondary character. Not even that—an extra. No one pays attention to walk-ons. I’ll be practically invisible. Her galloping pulse slowed.

Taking Rachel’s acceptance for granted, Candy Kane’s mind was already on a different track. “Don’t you dare tell any of the guests you work here.” Candy swiped fingers across her mouth in a zipping motion. “There’s a big tip in it if you keep the secret and pull this off.”

How big? Rachel wanted to ask, but kept her “sweet but sexy” lips clamped shut. Truthfully, a generous tip wasn’t the reason a shiver of excitement rippled across her exposed skin.

Panic receding, she’d belatedly begun to appreciate the photo-taking opportunities associated with being on the set in a supporting role, so to speak, instead of as a hotel employee with no legitimate excuse to approach a celebrity wedding guest.

Crazy About Dogs

by Madelle Morgan

If you've been reading my posts, you know I love dogs.

I grew up with dogs, but as an adult I had cats. Notice I didn't say I owned cats. Cat lovers will understand why.

Cats are easier to care for when you have a job. Cats are self-sufficient while their human is away for long days or even a weekend. No walking is needed, and cats don't gobble up the day's kibble the minute the dish is filled.

For the longest time I enjoyed dogs vicariously by creating dog characters in my Hollywood in Muskoka series.

MOPETTE

Mopette stars in Caught on Camera, a rom-com and first novel in the series. Mopette's a lovable white Maltese who is Trouble with a capital T.

That lavender ribbon from the bridesmaid's bouquet in her mouth on the cover? The Black Moment is all Mopette's fault. After she clamps her sharp little teeth into the ribbons and drags the bouquet away where Rachel can't find it, all hell breaks loose.

TITAN

Seduced by the Screenwriter's dog character is a retired German shepherd police service dog. He's based on a real canine hero named Titan owned by a Canadian police dog handler.

Catrina abandoned a career as a police diver after a horrifying case left her with PTSD. She relies on Titan. He's not only her best friend and partner in her security business, he's also her therapy dog.

When Catrina falls for Chett, a Hollywood screenwriter, he's quick to warn her that he is terrified of dogs, especially this particularly massive beast. She has to choose: it's either him or the dog. What an impossible quandary for Catrina!

BRANDY

Hollywood Hero, the third in the romance series, is in development, as they say in the movie biz. Meanwhile, readers want to know what happened to Mopette after the end of Caught on Camera. My arm was twisted to include her in Hollywood Hero as a secondary character, so I did! She has a trot-on role.

Hollywood Hero introduces an old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. She lives at Boondocks Lodge in Muskoka, which will be the setting for Hollywood Hero as well as the fifth in the series.

For this book, I held a contest, asking subscribers of my blog at MadelleMorgan.com for name suggestions. The winner who proposed the name Brandy won a paperback copy of Seduced by the Screenwriter.

Brandy of Boondocks Lodge
Our family had two rescue Chesapeakes, Cindy and Taffy, at different times in my childhood and teen years. They were both gentle, intelligent females who were protective of us kids. They loved swimming at the Muskoka summer cottage.

And now for the big reveal

My husband has retired, so.....

A bouncy, energetic puppy joined our family on May 3!

Raven was born March 8. She's a hypoallergenic Australian Labradoodle, the smallest in a litter of 10 pups. She'll be 30 pounds fully grown.

Raven at 8 weeks

And guess what? Right now she's the size of a cuddly cat.

Happy spring!

Royal Wedding Spring Fever & Giveaway

by Madelle Morgan

Royal weddings are so romantic

If you’re a royal romantic, you’ll want the scoop on all the details—the dresses, who’ll be in the wedding party, the cake, the flowers…

Click to see a slideshow of royal engagement and wedding rings.

The British royal family will host two weddings in 2018.

Princess Eugenie and Jack

Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter Princess Eugenie became engaged to longtime boyfriend James (Jack) Brooksbank in January 2018.

Princess Eugenie, the daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, is of course Prince William and Prince Harry's younger cousin. She works at an art gallery and Jack is in the hospitality business.

Although he’s a commoner, Jack is actually distantly related to his future bride. Find out more about Jack here and here. The marriage will take place in October.

Prince William and Kate

Prince William married Catherine in a spring wedding in 2011 and now they have three beautiful children. This photo of a painted wood tulip was taken at Ottawa’s annual May tulip festival a few years ago.

Prince Harry and Meghan

On May 19, 2018 it’s Prince Harry’s turn to take a bride, an American actor! Like Kate, Meghan Markle doesn’t come from royalty, not even Hollywood royalty. Meghan's dad was a lighting director for Hollywood television productions. She started at the bottom of the Hollywood ladder of success like anyone else.

Between early acting gigs Meghan supported herself as a freelance calligrapher. Check out her beautiful signature on the right of the screen here. It’s going to look spectacular on all those royal documents.

Prior to becoming the most envied girl in the world as the love of Prince Harry’s life, Meghan was best known for her role in the American legal drama television series Suits. While living in Toronto, Canada during filming, she met her future husband on a blind date.

After their marriage, the newest member of the British royal family will devote her time to humanitarian work at Prince Harry’s side. Fortunately Meghan is used to being in front of cameras, because that’s what’s in store for life.

Giveaway

In honor of Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding, I’m giving away three (3) e-copies of my wedding romance Caught on Camera, Hollywood in Muskoka series, Book 1.

To enter to win a copy, subscribe to my occasional blog at www.MadelleMorgan.com. That way I will have your email address and it will be totally private. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Winners will be notified on May 19th, the day of the wedding!

Living the Dream

by Madelle Morgan

This month’s topic is “If I were a millionaire.”  Well, I’m not. Far from it. But it’s fun to speculate about how I’d spend bags of money.

First, I’d buy a lake house. After my grandparents’ place was sold in my twenties, I’ve coveted my own piece of heaven. This luxurious property on Millionaire’s Row would do.

Each novel in my Hollywood in Muskoka series features a resort or lake house in Muskoka cottage country—the beautiful recreational area north of Toronto, Canada. I draw my writing inspiration from those summers at my grandparents’ lake house and subsequent vacation weeks at rented cottages.

My first summer job as a chambermaid at a Muskoka resort inspired Caught on Camera.

Delawana Inn, Honey Harbour, District of Muskoka

A Muskoka shop inspired Brigit’s SereniTea Shoppe in Seduced by the Screenwriter.

Abbey's Bake House, Port Carling, District of Muskoka

What draws us to waterfront property? The beach? Water sports? A place for extended family to gather and bond? All this and more.

My parents, sisters and I rented this old cottage with bunkie (sleeping cabin) that together slept 16. One bathroom + outhouse, an outdoor shower, and no TV.

We spent our precious days together mostly in or beside the water. Below my sister teaches our niece how to windsurf on a sailboard.

At night our kids had to play games that didn't require a screen.

Furry family members love being off-leash. Rudy inspired Caught on Camera's Mopette.

Yeah, it’s nice to dream of living in a palatial property, but I didn’t need to own one in order to create memories worth a million bucks.

Madelle in a giant Muskoka chair.
What would you do with a couple of million dollars?
