Au Revoir

by Madelle Morgan

After seven years as a Genre-ista with the second Tuesday of every month slot on the Romancing the Genres blog, this will be my last regular post.

Over those seven years I shared my journey as I developed the craft of writing romance, ventured into indie publishing, and learned about marketing.

Before I explain why I am hanging up my hat, here’s a brief summary of my writing and publishing efforts.

Diamond Lust, my first novel, was published by Ellora’s Cave in 2010. Although EC mostly published erotica, I will always be grateful that they took a chance on a new author and published my romantic suspense. That’s when I learned the value of a good editor! When I got the rights back, I indie-published it as Diamond Hunter in 2015 in digital and print formats.

I was on a (slow) roll. I indie-published two contemporary romances in the Hollywood in Muskoka series: Caught on Camera in 2016 and Seduced by the Screenwriter in 2017.

Obviously I am a slow writer. A book a year. In this digital era, an indie author needs to invest a lot of time and money to build a backlist and a fan base in order to ultimately sell thousands of low-priced ebooks.
Prose and Cons

To create a novel that meets traditional publishing standards, indie-published authors invest in expensive professional editing, covers, and formatting for print and digital formats. At least I did.

Audiobooks and translation are expensive options to enable authors to reach more buyers. Those costs were out of my reach.

Some authors spend thousands per year on marketing and promotion: Amazon, Twitter and Facebook ads, promo in e-newsletters such as Bookbub, and virtual assistants to organize and schedule it all. At the same time there is huge pressure to discount the books or offer the first in a series free.

To be blunt, an author who writes as slowly as I do can burn through a lot of money without significant return on that investment of time and money.

Best-selling authors aside, some traditionally and indie-published midlist authors do make a decent return on their time and monetary investment. They have multiple new releases a year plus a backlist, a fan base that buys every new release, and a winning advertising strategy, all vital to gain Amazon algorithm traction, ranking, visibility, and sales.

But what about authors who don't have deep pockets and multiple annual releases? I've heard of several midlist authors who could formerly earn their living from book sales but were dropped by their publishers and are now working at regular jobs to pay the bills.

Bottom line, my book sales do not come anywhere near paying for desired extras such as travel at this stage of my life as a "60 is the new 50" senior.

I was in the midst of planning Hollywood Hero, Book 3 of the Hollywood in Muskoka series, and then…

My Therapy Practice Took Off in 2018

Bowen Therapy is a gentle holistic bodywork, but people keep their clothes on. I discovered it in 2012 after 20 years of trying various ineffective therapies for long term back pain caused by a fall that misaligned my pelvis. I'm a retired civil engineer, and my structural engineering knowledge (tension/ compression/ torsion, etc.) and own skeletal alignment issues led me to become a certified practitioner and then take advanced training in order to specialize in musculo-skeletal alignment. Now that I am pain-free, it is very satisfying to eliminate eliminate back, neck and joint pain in clients who, like me, "tried everything" before finding Bowen Therapy.

Last year I reached a tipping point. Referrals from clients took off exponentially and I’ve been booked solid four days a week since. It’s rather exhausting to be so busy. I’m no spring chicken! But it’s worth it because my travel fund is growing.

Unfortunately my practice leaves me with too many commitments and not enough time. Something has to give…

Therefore I’m reluctantly hanging up my Genre-ista hat. From the bottom of my heart I thank Judith and Sarah who have worked so hard for many years to give me and other authors a platform.

Much love to Judith, Sarah, the Genre-istas and readers of this blog.

Crazy About Dogs

by Madelle Morgan

If you've been reading my posts, you know I love dogs.

I grew up with dogs, but as an adult I had cats. Notice I didn't say I owned cats. Cat lovers will understand why.

Cats are easier to care for when you have a job. Cats are self-sufficient while their human is away for long days or even a weekend. No walking is needed, and cats don't gobble up the day's kibble the minute the dish is filled.

For the longest time I enjoyed dogs vicariously by creating dog characters in my Hollywood in Muskoka series.

MOPETTE

Mopette stars in Caught on Camera, a rom-com and first novel in the series. Mopette's a lovable white Maltese who is Trouble with a capital T.

That lavender ribbon from the bridesmaid's bouquet in her mouth on the cover? The Black Moment is all Mopette's fault. After she clamps her sharp little teeth into the ribbons and drags the bouquet away where Rachel can't find it, all hell breaks loose.

TITAN

Seduced by the Screenwriter's dog character is a retired German shepherd police service dog. He's based on a real canine hero named Titan owned by a Canadian police dog handler.

Catrina abandoned a career as a police diver after a horrifying case left her with PTSD. She relies on Titan. He's not only her best friend and partner in her security business, he's also her therapy dog.

When Catrina falls for Chett, a Hollywood screenwriter, he's quick to warn her that he is terrified of dogs, especially this particularly massive beast. She has to choose: it's either him or the dog. What an impossible quandary for Catrina!

BRANDY

Hollywood Hero, the third in the romance series, is in development, as they say in the movie biz. Meanwhile, readers want to know what happened to Mopette after the end of Caught on Camera. My arm was twisted to include her in Hollywood Hero as a secondary character, so I did! She has a trot-on role.

Hollywood Hero introduces an old Chesapeake Bay Retriever. She lives at Boondocks Lodge in Muskoka, which will be the setting for Hollywood Hero as well as the fifth in the series.

For this book, I held a contest, asking subscribers of my blog at MadelleMorgan.com for name suggestions. The winner who proposed the name Brandy won a paperback copy of Seduced by the Screenwriter.

Brandy of Boondocks Lodge
Our family had two rescue Chesapeakes, Cindy and Taffy, at different times in my childhood and teen years. They were both gentle, intelligent females who were protective of us kids. They loved swimming at the Muskoka summer cottage.

And now for the big reveal

My husband has retired, so.....

A bouncy, energetic puppy joined our family on May 3!

Raven was born March 8. She's a hypoallergenic Australian Labradoodle, the smallest in a litter of 10 pups. She'll be 30 pounds fully grown.

Raven at 8 weeks

And guess what? Right now she's the size of a cuddly cat.

Happy spring!

Spring into Action While Listening to Audiobooks

by Madelle Morgan

It’s spring! Like the crocuses, we northerners are emerging from where we’ve been holed up all winter.

So much for enjoying hours of reading while wrapped up in blankets. It’s time to get going.

Spring chores cut into our downtime. There are gardens to prepare, patio furniture to set up, spring cleaning of your home, garage and yard, and more. There's less time to indulge in reading.

AUDIOBOOKS FOR WHEN YOU'RE ON THE MOVE

We can be active and still get our romance novel fix. Audiobooks have become very popular and more affordable.

Compare the costs and apps of these retail distributors where you can buy, stream or subscribe:

Lifehacker describes their top picks of audiobook services and features in this article.

Top Ten Reviews offers their selections of best audio services here.

FREE AUDIOBOOKS

Rakuten, owner of Kobo, additionally purchased OverDrive in 2015, making the Japanese company the largest distributor of quality free audiobooks. In North America you can borrow audiobooks from your local library for free via the Overdrive/Libby app.

Hoopla is another library streaming media platform.

LibriVox offers free downloads of books in the public domain; i.e. books published before the early 1930’s.

There are many other online sources of free audiobooks, including YouTube, of course. However, don’t expect every recording to meet professional quality standards. Many are uploading self-narrated efforts.

Money Talks News compares features of five popular free sources in this article.

Audiobooks – a way to make those spring chores more bearable!

Happy Spring. Happy Listening.

Writing a Series: Beyond Plotting

by Madelle Morgan

I'm starting to write Hollywood Hero, the third book in the Hollywood in Muskoka contemporary romance series.

Okay, I've been "starting" for a while. Over six months, to be exact.

If I were a pantser, I'd simply dive right in and start typing. While creating the story, I'd discover the story. Then I'd go into the second draft in a shaping & refining mode, like a sculptor carves a blob of clay into something that resembles art.

Since I'm a plotter, as I did for the first two in the series, I just need to create character profiles, internal and external goal, motivation and conflict (GMC) charts for each character, and scene structure (scene by scene POV, plot beats and goals), then start writing. Straightforward!

Or so I believed...

On the cusp of writing my seventh novel (three published), I expected plot development to be a breeze. I've read the craft books and distilled my own process for short contemporary romance. I even wrote posts about it. Click here and scroll down to Tips for Writing a Novel.

But I've Been Thinking

Two books in, I've belatedly realized that writing a series requires pinning down several abstract but critical elements before the easy and fun (to me) plotter's process of creating characters and drafting beat sheets.

In addition, readers have expectations that each story will give them a similar experience. That "similar experience" is the series "hook."  If you don't fulfill those expectations, readers lose interest in the series.

Expectations...what does that mean, exactly?

I've discovered that I need to spend time on (maybe I'm overthinking) these foundation elements.

Series Universal Theme

Each romance in the Hollywood in Muskoka series explores the universal theme of Identity. Each heroine struggles with these questions: What kind of person am I? Who do I want to be? Where do I belong? What should I do with my life?

Story Theme

Each story explores a different aspect of identity. Below are the story themes that reflect the heroine's internal conflict and journey to becoming her best self. Each novel's black moment emerges from the story theme, which is why (as a plotter) it is important to nail down the story theme before creating the scene structure and beats.

Caught on Camera: Deception leads to heartbreak.
Seduced by the Screenwriter: To heal, you must face your fear.
Hollywood Hero: To thine own self be true (draft).

Romance Trope

In the novel blurb, the trope has to be immediately evident to the prospective romance reader. It's vital to her "yes, I want to read this" or "no, I'll pass" decision.

Caught on Camera: Romantic Comedy
Seduced by the Screenwriter: Wounded Hero/Heroine
Hollywood Hero: Unrequited Love/In Love with the Boss

Tone

Caught on CameraHumorous, light
Seduced by the Screenwriter: Dramedy, dark elements
Hollywood HeroHumorous, light

Heat Level

Series: steamy

The Cast

When writing a series, several characters are continuing or will star in their own books. Therefore when crafting each story, secondary characters have to be introduced to set up the future novel and novella romances.

Caught on Camera, #1
Rachel and Mickey (hero and heroine). Introduces core series characters: the wedding party (Halden, Candy, Garth, Wade, Asta, Tiffany), Catrina, Marie-Eve, and Wendy. A character mentions Tiffany's director ex-husband who will be the hero in Book 4.

Seduced by the Screenwriter, #2
Catrina and Chett (hero and heroine). Introduces Brigit and Brad (Muskoka), and Jenna and Henrik (Hollywood).

Hollywood Hero, #3
Halden and Wendy (hero and heroine). Introduces Bella (Hollywood), Skylar (Muskoka) and maybe others TBD.

The Director's Dilemma, #4
Tiffany's ex and Asta (hero and heroine).

Getting the Greenlight, #5
Wade and Skylar (hero and heroine).

The Producer's Passion, #6
Garth and Tiffany (hero and heroine).

You can see that I have planted the seeds for Brigit, Henrik, Jenna, Brad, Bella, and Marie-Eve to have their own romances, should I decide to continue the series or write novellas within the timeline of the series. Then there are all the "extras"; that is, the local Muskoka community and Hollywood film industry characters who have walk-on parts, are villains, or get killed off.

That's quite a few inter-connected characters to juggle before starting to create the GMCs, beat sheets, scene structure, character arcs, etc. in the Muskoka "world." Yikes.

Series Bible & Timeline

The series takes place over a two to three year period. I have to keep notes on locations and characters (including dogs), and what each character is doing in the time frame of the individual novels. For example, Halden's film production company has several movies at various stages of development or in production over that time period. Several characters have various roles to play in the creation of these films. Their private relationships intersect their working relationships.

"We'll Fix it in Editing."

I'm a big picture thinker and a planner, so it's not overwhelming for me to think about six books at once. However, it takes time. There's the danger of getting mired in the details. Minor issues can be fixed in the second or third draft, but before I personally can start writing, the underlying structure needs to be pretty solid.

I plan to start writing Hollywood Hero next month.

I've been promising myself that for three months....

What I need is a deadline to get my you-know-what in the chair at the computer. Any ideas to share on what motivates you?

Enjoy the summer!

Caught on Camera is a Hollywood wedding romantic comedy set in Muskoka, Canada—summer playground of the rich and famous. It's Book 1 of the Hollywood in Muskoka series.

5 stars! "Caught on Camera" is a super fun read! Full of funny drama and lighthearted banter, it lifts the spirits. A witty, passionate romance, "Caught on Camera" is a great break from reality. Laura Dinsdale, InD’tale magazine review, October 2017.

Seduced by the Screenwriter, Book 2, is a steamy romantic dramedy.

Cat and Chett’s characters are well developed, drawing the reader into their individual plights, while their campy banter keeps the story light and downright fun. Ms. Morgan keeps the plot moving with humorous situations and dialogue interspersed with exciting and poignant drama. A good read for a snowy afternoon. —Marc Joseph, InD’Tale magazine review, March 2018.

Royal Wedding Spring Fever & Giveaway

by Madelle Morgan

Royal weddings are so romantic

If you’re a royal romantic, you’ll want the scoop on all the details—the dresses, who’ll be in the wedding party, the cake, the flowers…

Click to see a slideshow of royal engagement and wedding rings.

The British royal family will host two weddings in 2018.

Princess Eugenie and Jack

Queen Elizabeth’s granddaughter Princess Eugenie became engaged to longtime boyfriend James (Jack) Brooksbank in January 2018.

Princess Eugenie, the daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, is of course Prince William and Prince Harry's younger cousin. She works at an art gallery and Jack is in the hospitality business.

Although he’s a commoner, Jack is actually distantly related to his future bride. Find out more about Jack here and here. The marriage will take place in October.

Prince William and Kate

Prince William married Catherine in a spring wedding in 2011 and now they have three beautiful children. This photo of a painted wood tulip was taken at Ottawa’s annual May tulip festival a few years ago.

Prince Harry and Meghan

On May 19, 2018 it’s Prince Harry’s turn to take a bride, an American actor! Like Kate, Meghan Markle doesn’t come from royalty, not even Hollywood royalty. Meghan's dad was a lighting director for Hollywood television productions. She started at the bottom of the Hollywood ladder of success like anyone else.

Between early acting gigs Meghan supported herself as a freelance calligrapher. Check out her beautiful signature on the right of the screen here. It’s going to look spectacular on all those royal documents.

Prior to becoming the most envied girl in the world as the love of Prince Harry’s life, Meghan was best known for her role in the American legal drama television series Suits. While living in Toronto, Canada during filming, she met her future husband on a blind date.

After their marriage, the newest member of the British royal family will devote her time to humanitarian work at Prince Harry’s side. Fortunately Meghan is used to being in front of cameras, because that’s what’s in store for life.

Giveaway

In honor of Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding, I’m giving away three (3) e-copies of my wedding romance Caught on Camera, Hollywood in Muskoka series, Book 1.

To enter to win a copy, subscribe to my occasional blog at www.MadelleMorgan.com. That way I will have your email address and it will be totally private. You can unsubscribe at any time.

Winners will be notified on May 19th, the day of the wedding!

Are you excited about Prince Harry and Meghan’s wedding? Which royal wedding is your favorite?
