What's the worst that could happen?

I’m one of those people who gets an idea to try a thing and thinks ‘what’s the worst that could happen?’, but I want to try the thing, so don't worry about the potential disaster.

Many (many) moons ago, I left college to be a nanny in England. The earth didn’t leave orbit, nor did I become homeless, forced to wander the moors calling for Heathcliff. (Actually, that sounds kind of fun, doesn’t it?) But nor did I marry Prince Andrew – he never returned my calls. Uh … thank goodness.

I left college for the second time (see a pattern here?) and relocated to Baltimore with my then-boyfriend. We lived in a slightly scary neighbourhood (police helicopters were forever shining their searchlights in our backyard), but I survived, have a few exciting stories to tell, and am still married (37 years) to that boyfriend.

Since then, I've had many ideas, some successful (writing a book can’t be that hard - ha!), others not so much. But I’m always willing and/or eager to try.

A few years ago, we built our dream retirement home. Well, ‘we’ didn’t do any of the actual building. The construction crew did all the work. DH and I merely supervised and made decisions. (Though there were times I’d have preferred to pound nails than decide where to put the freaking electrical outlets … grrrr.) But we left a few things unfinished because I had the idea that we’d work on those things ourselves. Save a few pennies in labour costs and try something new. It would be fun!

To clarify, there are a few things I have no desire to try, and they involve heights. Step onto a 60th-floor balcony? I’d rather not, thanks. Bungee jump? No, thank you! Skydive? Are you insane?!? Shingle a roof? Hm …

One of the undone projects was building a garden shed. You’re probably aware that a shed is useless without a roof.

And so up the ladder I went.

That’s me without my face blacked out. With me are my daughter-in-love and my long-suffering DH who goes along with most of my great ideas. Son1 took the photo.

As I ascended the ladder, I thought, ‘what’s the worst that could happen’. Death was a possibility. The shed is only one story tall, but I don’t think that matters if one lands on one’s head. A broken bone would be more likely, or a big, BIG bruise.

No one was injured in the creation of this shed, apart from skinned knuckles. I perfected my hammering skills, and we get to brag about building a darned nice shed. And we have a few stories to tell.

I’d never built a sundeck before either, so we did that next.

And since we were successful with the garden shed and sundeck, we next tackled the hen house.

What’s the bravest thing you’ve ever tried? Are you a fellow ‘what’s the worst that could happen’ thinker?

The Heart of the Cosmos

By Robin Weaver

What touches my heart? A myriad of things brings a tear to the eye and a smile to my face -- kittens, babies, the people I love.

While those wonderful things might garner an “aww,” or a “that’s nice,” or even a “bless your heart,” talking about them won’t really entertain you.  Have you already fallen asleep?

Well let me wake you up with my geeky love of science.  And Pluto.  YES, PLUTO.  With Valentine’s day just around the corner, we must honor the planet that literally wears a heart on its surface (See photo below).

I’ve been fascinated with little Pluto since the day I memorized the name of the nine planets. Obviously, I know Pluto is no longer a planet. Really, is there anyone on normal-sided planet Earth who doesn’t know poor Pluto is now a dwarf?  Frankly, I don’t get all the fuss? After all, isn’t being a dwarf planet far preferable to being a gas giant? Pluto is actually the kitten of the solar system—just look at the picture, all crimson and shiny white heart.  Almost makes you want to hug it.

Like most heroes, Pluto has been greatly misunderstood.  Discovered in 1930, scientists thought Pluto was a cold dead world, not unlike our moon, although Pluto is only two-thirds the diameter of the moon. Then the New Horizons mission by NASA changed all that.  We now know the planet has an active geology with ice volcanoes; a mountain range 11,000 feet tall; and a subsurface ocean.  Even though tiny Pluto is over 3.5 billion miles from the sun, some scientists believe it might harbor primitive life. There’s a lot packed into that little dwarf.

Pluto epitomizes the wonders of discovery. This little planet—excuse me, dwarf planet--demonstrates that things are not always what they seem. In a remote way, it demonstrates that good things do come in small packages. It also reminds us that we have so much to learn, and that there is joy in the learning. It gives us hope for life, both alien and humankind.

And I hope you have a fabulous Valentine’s day.

A Destiny To Inspire

DaniJo Avia
Years ago A mentor of mine led me through the process of creating a Life Purpose Statement. After laboring over it for several hours I finally settled on three paragraphs that encompassed all I felt I was to accomplish in my life.

Creating that Life Purpose Statement was laborious. And while my intent wasn’t to sound grandiose, it didn’t feel like… me. Oh, it was true and accurate, and observable, but how it was expressed was just… too much. So I never really owned it, I lived it but I never owned it.

Almost 10 years later I reread those paragraphs and was able to refine my Life Purpose to one sentence, “The purpose of my life is to reflect God and to encourage others.”, and if I’m really honest, that sentence can be distilled to two words: Reflect and Encourage.

My writing embodies those two words and can be summed up as “I write to inspire”.

Skinnydipping, Book 1 of the Destiny Series, came about when I asked the question “What would it take to get someone to do something they’d always been afraid to do, and in the process learned who they really were and what they really wanted in life?”

Discovery, Book 2 of the Destiny Series, came about when I asked the question “What would happen if someone realized that they were more than they had previously thought?”

Legacy, Book 3 of the Destiny Series, currently in process, addresses the legacy we all leave behind us, whether we are aware or are intentional about leaving a legacy.

Writing, specifically writing romance is not something I ever expected to pursue. The stories come from my heart and are a reflection of the life I live. More importantly they need to be shared - to encourage and to inspire others to dream bigger and dream seemingly impossible dreams, to reach for more than one ever thought possible.

As I have journeyed down this path, I have come to learn that creativity spans all areas of our lives, from writing, painting, photography, music, architecture, gardening, managing, accounting and writing code.

Creativity is present in our everyday lives. We may not recognize it as creativity, or we may call it by a different name, but it inspires us and moves us forward from where we have been.

Over the past several years I was in a field that necessitated I keep a low social media profile, that and the demands on my time did not allow for writing. Having finished that assignment I now have the time to write, and what tumbled off my printer? Coloring books and Coloring Pages!

June 2016 I published ten Adult coloring books ranging in theme from Pencil Sketch, Gray Scale, Mandalas, Kaleidoscopes, Doodles and my favorite, 21 Days of Mindful Meditation. In addition individual coloring pages have also been created, with more on the way! All are available on my Etsy store.

A very wise person once told me that insight and inspiration grow in the potting soil of peace. These books and pages were designed to inspire creativity and create a moment to take a breath in the midst of life to pause and connect with the Spirit of Wisdom and Insight that comes when you allow the busyness of life to slide away. They are my attempt to help people create that time and place where insight and inspiration not only take root but flourish.

In the works:

More coloring books and pages! I’m having fun creating coloring pages and have also outlined books with several additional themes.

Finishing Legacy, Book 3 of the Destiny Series, Frank’s story. This series is all about encouraging people to live a larger life than the influences our society models. The Destiny Series is available at your favorite eBook site.

And I’m toying with the idea of a series based on inspiring and motivational quotes. Churchill said those that do not learn from the past are doomed to repeat it. We are all enlarged when we learn from others thoughts and experiences.

Till we meet again!
