Head in the Clouds - Where do you get your inspiration? ............................ by Delsora Lowe

Being a writer can be tough sometimes.

Not because of the work that goes into every piece we write, whether it is a short blog, a poem, or an entire novel. But because our imagination NEVER stops.

Too many ideas. Not enough time in the universe to make all those words sing and deliver a message.

Not long ago, I drove by a sign that indicated a consignment shop. I immediately wrote a 5-minute short story in my head, as I drove. I have since drafted out one I will eventually send to Woman’s World, after I edit it a zillion times.

Recently, I visited my son who lives about forty-five minutes away. He lives just outside a small village. I emerged from the car to a greeting from a black cow mooing. Moooo. Moooo.

And then the other cows answered back. Moooo. Next door is a big white barn, and my son’s house is surrounded by farmland. We often see wild turkeys or deer, and once a bear. Another time, while eating dinner, a fox strolled through the back yard, right past the window by the dining room table. Today, as we drove back to his house, a red-tailed hawk flew right over the car. And as I left about ten minutes later, that same (I assume) hawk flew back over my car in the opposite direction.

I know there is a story in there somewhere with all this wildlife and domestic animal neighbors, including my grand-dog Yaz who loves to greet his human grammy—even if it is a short piece for my weekly local writers’ group or an idea for a children’s book.

Snuggling in - my disguise - so no one knows I'm sitting on the couch,

As I cruised past the tiny nearby village, there are many rural roads that arrow off the two-lane main road. Some leading to one house and some to a small complex of houses. I love the names of the roads. They always trigger ideas. One is Turkey Trot Lane, and another little lane is named Pumpkin Way. Story ideas immediately swam through the creative side of my brain, as I repeated over and over Turkey Trot Lane and Pumpkin Way on my drive home. I didn’t want to forget any story ideas swimming through my head, since I couldn’t stop and make notes.

For a split second I envisioned a trilogy—each book title and theme based around these two street names, plus other fun names of streets that arrow off along that same stretch of road. My brain didn't have enough bandwidth to memorize more than two street names.

Now I’ve jotted notes and hopped on the computer to record thoughts before they disappear. Conjuring up story ideas that happen around Halloween and Thanksgiving, and even into the month of December.

Will Turkey Trot Lane and Pumpkin Way be locations in one story? Or will each be the title of a stand-alone story? It is hard to say. Until my fingers do the walking across the keyboard, who knows where the musings living in my mind will take me.

But let me remind you that a book I wrote several years ago (The Inn on Gooseneck Lane) and,  published by The Wild Rose Press in 2022, is titled and based around a street sign (Gooseneck Lane.) I passed the tiny lane in the middle of nowhere, while cruising a back road in Vermont.

I played with story ideas in my head for the next few hours, driving back to Maine.

So, who knows what stories the next two street signs will lead to as I write.

The creative murmurings that leave my brain as story ideas, are usually channeled through my fingers. Many times, as I reread what I wrote, I am as surprised at what ends up on the page as a potential reader will be.

So, if you are looking for signs or inspiration, don’t forget those street names that may be inspiration and turn into one more story—whether it is a short story, a novella, a novel, an essay, or a poem.

And if you are in the car and can’t write down your idea, repeat the inspirational phrase (or street sign) over and over until you can pull to the side of the road and write down your idea. Yes, it works!

Whether you are a writer or enjoy artistic hobbies,

where do you get your ideas?

The Month of "No."

Many years ago, I saw the musical, Camelot on the big screen. One of the big numbers was about "the lusty month iof May." A time whare everyone tosses self-control and does everything and anything with no regrets. It was all invigorating, and quite literally exhausting just to watch.

Every May that kind of spring fever/frenzy hits and my real life can become just as frenzied as life on the screen.

Now, the Earth has swung half-way around its orbit. It's November 2024, the season of NO.

No & not right now, words that help keep us from being stretched too thin. They give us time to rejuvenate our healthiest selves. Schedules are nice, but - don’t feel tied down. Learn to extricate yourself from commitments with grace. That includes saying no to good things too - even to things you want to do. Create routines that nurture you. Take any snatch of time for unwinding, rest, and rejuvenation. Renew and relax, even if you only 10-15 minutes at a time. Self care does not require a grand event, like a day at the spa. Embrace the changes that bring you joy, both big and little. Matching towels or new lingerie are small things that can make you happy.

Lean into community, the people who celebrate you. Don’t overbook activities. Don't forget that your family, especially children suffer when the adults around them are unhealthy. You are IRREPLACEABLE in your child's life, so relax and be the best you you can be!

Sometimes you NEED help. For some of us, there is a deeply rooted belief that we should not seek help, either physical or mental. That doing so is a sign of weakness. As if we’re supposed to be superwomen and supermen. learn to seek out and accept help.

Overcome the need to please disease.  Give yourself grace and permission to say no with confidence and without regre. Know that not everything will end up picture perfect, and that’s okay.

For now, let's recharge our batteries and respect our limits. And know that the world will keep turning. May will come again.

All Things Pumpkin and Fall…And Romance .......... by Delsora Lowe

Romance novels and films have been maligned or mocked as being frilly and frivolous and feeding a false narrative on life.

Hello! Why do you think romance novels are the highest selling category of book than any other genre—fiction or non-fiction? We all want to dream about a wonderful and loving life. And, no, romance novels are not based on a false narrative. But yes, the entire genre is meant to boost hope for a feel-good future; however that is defined by the reader.

Watching “seasonal” – as in any season – Hallmark movies, or Lifetime Christmas movies, or reading a seasonal book by one of many best-selling, or newly discovered, romance authors, is a guaranteed FEEL-GOOD.

In fact, a book will not be classified as a romance without a Happily-Ever-After ending, or a Happily-For-Now ending—which infers a Happily-Ever-After beyond the end of the book.

So, what does this have to do with pumpkins, you ask? In my mind… romance. Fall-themed romance books and movies. Turn on Hallmark and you will be accosted by pumpkins, colorful leaves, actors in sweaters, and participating in fall activities, despite the fact they film these movies in the heat of summer.

I love the fall season. The air is crisp — allowing for the comfort of a sweater to snuggle into. The leaves change from vibrant green to a medley of colors, depending on the type of tree. The flowers are sturdier and have deeper, richer colors, than the dainty pastels of spring. The pale sky blue of summer turns into a deeper blue before darkening to a vibrant azure in late fall and winter. The shadows lengthen as the sun drops below the horizon earlier each day. Even the nights seem darker and brighter with brilliant stars and distinct constellations. And pumpkins abound, with their beautiful and happy orange color.

But I digress. Back to books.

I scour new book listings that will embrace the fall season—their covers resplendent with colorful leaves, crisp, blue skies, and the promise of cooler temps. That means we can bring out our favorite cozy sweaters, and brew fun hot liquids. Do you know how many ways you can doctor a simple cup of hot cocoa, especially when you add spices associated with fall? Ever try the combo of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cayenne in a cup of coco? Heavenly—with a subtle hint of heat to add to the warmth of the liquid.

As a romance novel enthusiast, I am also a romance movie fanatic. My dear friend and I critique every movie, as we watch and compare notes. Then we Google “Stream It or Skip It” to see if our take on the movie matches the “expert” reviewer. You would be amazed how many times, we “nail” the gist of what the reviewer says.

Extreme fandom? You bet! But I prefer to call the activity of watching romance movies “a must-research” for writers of romance. And…I’ll let you in on a little secret…ever since I saw my first Hallmark movie, back when I was in Junior High—a LONG time ago—when the movies only came out three or four times a year, I dreamed of having a Hallmark movie made from one of my books. Not that I ever thought of actually writing one at that age.

Full disclosure—I still dream that dream. Only now, I’m actually writing romance novels. And if I’m honest, in the back of my head sits that little—okay—gigantic dream egging me on.

Another way of researching romances is through reading. I religiously buy Woman’s World every week. Although, I used to be a caterer and restaurant cook, so I do love their recipes, I still flip toward the back of the magazine first. You know why? The 5-minute romance! I’ve even sold 4 stories to the magazine since my first in 2010. And right now, I am madly editing for the umpteenth time two stories, one for Christmas and one for New Year’s Eve. I just sent in a Thanksgiving story. It’s a tough market, but with all the almost sixty shorts I have written over the years, I am now assembling an anthology. So, eventually those stories will get a home.

November 2018 - "Bright New Beginnings" - My Story
About Organizing the Local Thanksgiving Parade

But I digress. What does my love of romance movies have to do with fall and pumpkins, besides a plethora of pumpkins in the movies at this time of year? Not much, except my writing is in full, fall-themed mode. And my tastebuds are clamoring to tell the “artistic” part of my brain that it’s time to cook my favorite pumpkin or squash enhanced recipes.

So, let’s talk food! Pumpkins, in particular. I am immersed in reading fall-themed romance books and watching movies that seem to have plenty of pumpkins. And…I am buying ingredients to make my favorite fall soups that include winter-type squashes or pumpkins. And who doesn’t love to sip a fall-flavored and pumpkin-spiced hot tea on a crisp fall day. Or, in my case, as I write this and stare out my window, a typical fall day filled with skittering white clouds in a bright blue and sunny sky, followed by graying clouds and intermediate spits of rain. A great day for fall-flavored soup and tea.

Yes, folks…Fall is here, and the pumpkins are piled up in front of the local grocery store. Enjoy the season!

What do you like about pumpkins?

Do you enjoy pumpkin-flavored

food and drinks? Or are there other foods, drinks,

and scenery that remind you of fall?

Do you like reading romances set in the fall?

Being Thankful

For Americans, November is all about Thanksgiving and being grateful for what we have. For me 2014 has been a year of ups and downs, but it's also been a year that has made me realize how much the people in my life mean to me. It's also been a year for me to realize how much I mean to those within my life.
Since my father has been going through so much, as the readers of my blog already know, I have hit pockets of time where I get so overwhelmed I turn into a turtle and hide. That's where my friends have come into play.
And this is where I want to give a Thank You to our blog queens, Judith and Sarah. If it wasn't for you guys emailing and calling me I might have morphed from a turtle into an ostrich with my head in the sand. You two mean the most to me and I wish there was a way to say it better.

Who is the person who pulls you out of your hole and how would you say thank you to them?

Twenty-five Unusual Things I Am Grateful For.

In the spirit of the season, I will now share twenty-five things I am truly grateful for:

  1. I got away with twelve years between colonoscopies. Score!
  2. Costco put laminate flooring on sale in 2007, making this year's puppy "accidents" no big deal.
  3. My lack of interest in cooking means I don’t have to remodel my 1982 kitchen.
  4. My husband acts as my Filipino houseboy and takes care of indoor things.
  5. My husband acts as my Mexican gardener and takes care of the landscaping.
  6. My husband laughs when I say this and adds, "And I'm her Latin lover."
  7. Viagra.
  8. The chance to hug my 27-year-old, 6'3" cover model and not be accused of anything untoward.
  9. The word untoward.
  10. The word scarletted – which I made up. And use frequently.
  11. Staying up until midnight, or later, every night. Then I climb into:
  12. our Sleep-Number bed, with 3" memory foam topper, and down pillows. Heaven.
  13. Dollar Store magnifying readers.
  14. Costco. Obviously.
  15. The BBC sitcom "Miranda" on Hulu Plus and YouTube. You're welcome.
  16. Free soda refills.
  17. Hard Rock Cafés in other countries, which give free soda refills.
  18. British Air, which flies to London non-stop from Phoenix every day, so I can go to the original Hard Rock Café and get free soda refills.
  19. That Keurig comes in a travel size.
  20. Real butter, cheese, and bacon.
  21. Cheap cholesterol meds.
  22. Cable.
  23. Android smart phones.
  24. Wine. (Kinda pissed at beer for having so many carbs and calories, I gotta be honest…)
  25. And, of course: Laughter.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!
Kris ;)
