(Dragon’s Instinct) Elva’s the author for you! https://www.elvabirch.com

Elva Birch’s holiday books are written under her name and the pen name Zoe Chant:

Tis The Season for Romance by Susan Horsnell

TIS THE SEASON FOR ROMANCE ANTHOLOGY

Tis The Season For Romance is an abundance of heartfelt wishes, a touch of Christmas magic, and a guaranteed happy ever after, all while celebrating this most joyful time of the year.

Bestselling and Award-Winning authors fill your holiday stocking with novellas ranging from sweet to sassy, bursting with excitement and anticipation for the upcoming Christmas holiday.

My name is Susan Horsnell and I live in the sunny state of Queensland with my husband and one year old Jack Russell Terrier: Gemma-Jean.

I was born in Manly on the Northern Beaches in Sydney, Australia and apart from marrying my very own prince, the highlight of my life was being accepted into Nursing just before my 16th birthday. It had been a long-time dream which encompassed 37 years of my life. Along with nursing, being married to a Naval Officer for almost 47 years, and posted in numerous places, gave me experiences which I have written into many of my books.

My books are in various genres—Western Historical Romance–both steamy and sweet, Contemporary Romance–steamy and sweet, Male/Male, Australian Outback and City Romance. I also have one menage and one paranormal romance along with two children's books. As I said earlier, I have a rather overactive imagination.

I hope you will pick up one of my books and when you close the cover on one of my stories it will be with a satisfied sigh.

To follow me, go to: https://linktr.ee/SusanHorsnell

One of my contributions to this anthology is set in an outback town that is one of my favorite places to visit. In my story, it has been given a fictional name but descriptions are of the real town.

StarCrossed

Lane Pittsworth is a man tired of being a prime time television celebrity journalist.

Of having to meet the expectations of others who care nothing about him.

He’s on the lookout for an escape from his fame.

All her life, Cameron Cauldwell has considered herself a geek.

More interested in the skies above than love.

When these two meet, the stars align, and there was never any doubt the pair would become StarCrossed.

The other amazing authors contributing to this set include:
Kathleen Ryder. Josie Johnston, Diana Dawn, Mary Morano, J.F. Lowe,

A.M. Olenick, Andra Dill, Maddison Cole, Argentina Ryder, Susannah Kade,

Jakki Frances, Louisa Duval, Ava Bari, Lorah Jaiyn, Katherine Moore,

Amy Stephens, B. Livingstone, Ashley Brion, and Tricia Schneider.

Writing in the Pandemic by Sue Moorcroft

Sue Moorcroft

This year’s been a hard one for many people. I consider myself fortunate because ‘getting paid for making stuff up’ wasn’t a bad way to survive the Covid-19 restrictions. While I was writing, my mind was in another place where people could still hug, kiss, visit pubs and travel, it made up for some of the stuff I was missing.

What was I missing? My writing retreat in Italy and writing breaks in Malta. Holidays. Family. Friends. The gym. Publishing parties, book launches and research trips abroad. And meetings with my publisher and agent. In the UK, in-person meetings have become possible again but for eighteen months they took place on Zoom or Teams. There were advantages, because I could attend in leggings and slippers and I saved the time and money I’d normally spend travelling, but I missed the personal connections formed by being physically in the meeting.

I can’t imagine what would have happened to publishing (and probably every other industry) without video conferencing and industry professionals working from home via their computers, carrying on valiantly, despite everything. I was conscious that I benefitted from an OK study and a fairly quiet house but some I work with had crowded homes, had no childcare and/or had to homeschool their kids. Some had partners/spouses facing all the same frustrations. Yet, somehow, via the dedication of staff, publishing kept going. I played my part by hitting deadlines and doing my best, like them, to adapt. Crying on their shoulders about how tough my life was seemed unfair and irresponsible.

However, my income has been adversely affected. In fact, I felt as if the UK government had something against me as in spring they put the country in lockdown the instant Summer on a Sunny Island came out, closing book shops and curtailing footfall in supermarkets. Then they called an autumn lockdown to coincide with the release of Christmas Wishes. It’s a relief that this year Under the Italian Sun and A Home in the Sun were released into a more relaxed selling environment and Under the Mistletoe should benefit the same way. Also, sales of ebooks and e-audio have been more than healthy, for which I am incredibly grateful, as I was also affected by publishers of translation editions putting my books back a year.

Covid doesn’t exist within the pages of my books. My editor and agent advised against it and I think they were correct. While my novels deal with some tough subjects, essentially they are escapist, and I believe Covid is what most of my readers want to escape from.

Unfortunately…Covid does exist in real life. Despite having had both vaccinations, I began symptoms on July 26th and was very unwell by the 29th, a situation that continued for weeks. I had to pull out of a conference and a commission to write a magazine serial and my publisher has moved my summer 2022 book back in the publishing schedule. I lost easily a month’s writing time and then could only work for half days for a further two weeks, and I was working at about 80% effectiveness by mid-September. My editor and agent could not have been more supportive during this unpleasant time while I struggled through the brain fog to get back into the book I’d been forced to abandon a few chapters before the end.

All that’s behind me now! I’m here to enjoy the coming publication days - Under the Mistletoe in the UK and A Christmas Gift in the US and Canada.

Sue Moorcroft is a Sunday Times bestselling author and has reached the coveted #1 spot on Amazon Kindle UK as well as top 100 in the US. She’s won the Goldsboro Books Contemporary Romantic Novel Award, Readers' Best Romantic Novel award and the Katie Fforde Bursary.

Sue’s emotionally compelling, feel-good fiction is currently released by publishing giant HarperCollins in the UK, US and Canada and by other publishers in other countries. Her short stories, serials, columns, writing how to’ and courses have appeared around the world.

Born in Germany into an army family, Sue spent much of her childhood in Cyprus and Malta but settled in Northamptonshire, England aged ten. She loves reading, Formula 1, travel, time spent with friends, dance exercise and yoga.

Thankful for Romance by Kathy Coatney

What do I have to be thankful for? This is a frequent theme in my books, especially my Christmas books. Most of my characters face difficult challenges—some painful and some more of an annoyance, but they always have plenty to be thankful for by the end of the book.

This stems from the secondary characters. They're the ones who advise and encourage the hero/heroine. These are the characters who are always there for my h/h when the going gets tough. It could be a husband, parent, children, siblings, grandchildren, or friends. Just having these people in their corner is the best gift in the world. Kids, in particular, have such a unique way of making someone feel special and needed, and that is an incredible gift, in my opinion.

What I love most about romance is that connection between the h/h and the secondary characters. Even if the h/h don't have that special someone in their lives—yet—they still have a lot to be thankful for.

I also think romances get us through the hard times. I've heard of so many readers that say an author's book has helped them through serious illness and death. Sure there's a happily-ever-after in the end, but when real life is unbearably hard, it's nice to read something uplifting with a guaranteed happy ending.

I write small-town romances, and I’ve always preferred to set my books in winter, but

I’ve never written Christmas books—until last year. I've discovered I really, really like writing holiday romances. I think a major reason for that is the thankful theme fits so well with Christmas since the holiday is all about being grateful and helping others. That theme really resonates with me.

Last year I wrote the Crooked Halo Christmas Chronicles—The Murphy Clan. Each story is about 100 pages and they have guardian angels watching over the couple in need of assistance on their journey to finding true love. The angels sent to guide them are also attracted to each other, so there is a dual romance going on in each story.

Last year there were three stories in the Crooked Halo Christmas Chronicles—The Murphy Clan that concluded with a happily-ever-after for the angels, too. I’m currently working on a new Christmas chronicle with two new angels helping bring about a Christmas romance while fighting an attraction to each other.

I just finished Santa Comes to Snowside, a full-length holiday romance that is with my editor right now, with a November release date. After I lost a dear friend last spring, it motivated me to write this book. She loved Christmas and every year her house was a Christmas wonderland. She was one of my biggest supporters—my critiquer, my beta reader, my everything for writing and friendship.

I was so thankful to have known her, and that's part of what drove me to write this book and start a new Christmas series (series title pending) that gives her a recurring role as Jody Claws, and her husband, Nick. Every Christmas they help bring a couple together and spread the Christmas spirit. I hope Jody loves these characters and the story as much I’ve enjoyed creating and writing them.

I look around at my life, and I truly have so much to be thankful for. My husband, children, and grandchildren have all made my life deeper and more meaningful, filling it with joy and happiness. I'm also grateful for the readers here today—for all my readers, in fact, because I love sharing what comes from my heart.

Here is a sneak peek of Santa Comes to Snowside:

Prologue

Snowside, Vermont

When humor exists, love isn’t far behind

“Well Nicky, where are we off to this Christmas holiday?”

Nicholas Claws arched busy brows as he glanced at his wife, Jody, seated beside him in their candy cane red Mini Cooper convertible. He shifted into high gear and punched the gas just enough to throw her head back. The wind tossed her silver curls, producing the tinkling laugh he loved.

“One of our worker bees found a place I think you’ll love. It’s called WorkForce, and Jack Davidson, the man who started the nonprofit has the kind of giving nature that’s right up your alley. He helps the low income and unemployed find work by providing them with work clothes, write resumes, and even has a hair salon onsite.”

Jody’s smile warmed him through and through. “I love it! Tell me more.”

“Well, our visionary, Mr. Davidson, saw a need in the community, gave up a lucrative career and swanky high-rise apartment on the eastside of Snowside, invested his savings and retirement to buy a rundown warehouse in the industrial section. He’s currently living above it to save money.”

Jody’s blue eyes rounded beneath wire-rimmed glasses. “And he’s doing this all on his own?”

“Not totally. Mickey Roberts, his uncle, supported his vision from the start, and he manages the hair salon at WorkForce. The downturn in the economy several years ago started Jack on his path to enlightenment. White collar workers were laid off, including his best friend who almost lost everything. Then Mickey struggled after returning from Iraq, and if not for family support he could have ended up on the street three Christmas’s ago.”

Jody stroked Prancer, the miniature poodle asleep on her lap. “Well, color me intrigued. This sounds like a perfect Christmas project for us, but will we be able to make it home in time to finish our Christmas village?”

“It might be tight, but we’ve always made it home for Christmas, and WorkForce could definitely use some volunteer support to keep it up and running. I don’t see how we can pass this up, do you?” He flipped the blinker to the left and pulled onto the freeway, heading south.

“No, we can’t. This project is just what we’ve been looking for. We’ve got a nonprofit that needs a bit of assistance, and we can’t walk away from that, but you haven’t told me much about Jack.”

Nick might have found the perfect nonprofit for them, but Jody always wanted to know about the people—in particular their relationship status. “Jack’s single, estranged from his parents, and at the moment unattached, but I think there’s a prospect that with your special touch could bring about a holiday romance.”

Jody lifted her face to the unseasonably warm sunshine, the bare trees marking the beginning of the holiday season.

“Then we not only need to work on the romance but also bring Jack back together with his parents.”

“There’s also a teenager named Tony who needs our help, too. He’s a non-believer.”

“Oh my, we can’t have that. We’ll have to come up with a Christmas miracle or two to get him back on track.”

         “You read my mind.”

“Oh, I do love the challenge of a new project. It’s like the first flush of love. Do you remember when we first met?”

His wife looked over at him, rosy cheeks and blue eyes twinkling as bright as the silver bells dangling from her earlobes.

“How could I forget? You bring it up every year when we start a new project.”

“So what attracted you to me? My cookies or hot chocolate?”

A loaded question that he wasn’t about to debate again. There was only one correct answer. “Both.”

Jody winked at him. “Good answer.”

Nick pressed down on the accelerator and headed toward Vermont, where they would spend the duration of the Christmas holiday.

Finally a New Project...by Kristin Wallace

Last year became something of an unintentional hiatus from writing...at least the fiction writing side of my life. Some ongoing health problems made it nearly impossible to focus the way I needed in order to create stories. Plus, I'm sure the ongoing COVID crisis made things even more difficult.

BUT...a writer friend convinced me to be part of a holiday box Holiday Fake-Out. As the title suggests every story centers around a fake holiday date. This set features an eclectic mix of authors, including NYT Bestselling author, Heather Graham. The set features many different kinds of romance, from contemporary and suspense to paranormal.

Holiday Fake-Out

Need a date for the holidays? Oh joy…We've got you covered with 22 fake holidates to heat up your season!

Travel from small towns to cosmopolitan cities, snow covered mountains to gorgeous mansions. You'll

meet sexy billionaires, brainy tech gods, buff journalists, sinfully cocky athletes, and sizzling hot chefs. They're naughty and nice (and everything in between) and they're enough to fulfill any romantic fantasies.

These 22 swoon-worthy heroes are ready to be your *fake* plus-one at holiday events, from Christmas weddings to Chanukahand Kwanzaa celebrations. Each starts out as a charade, and though they might lie to family, friends, or co-workers, they won't be able to fool themselves when a very real romance develops.

As for my, I am returning to a familiar place...A place called Covington Falls, the setting for my popular inspirational series. I'm introducing a new family this time. Actually, a few of them debuted in my first book, Marry Me. I'm enlarging the family tree of Covington Fall's mayor...or rather his wife's family, Catherine Manning.

Christmas Charade - Covington Falls Chronicles

The story revolves around Magnolia (Maggie) Lewis. She left Covington Falls over a family rift and the desire to follow her dream as an artist and sculptor. Now, she has to return for her cousin's Christmas wedding. She can't go back alone, however, because everyone thinks she has a boyfriend. (It was just a tiny lie.) A non-boyfriend who has no idea he's about to get dragged into her family drama.

Convincing Liam Sullivan to be her fake date to the wedding is only the first challenge. She needs to make sure she doesn't fall in love with him for real.

Mutts and Mistletoe Book Review (Redux) by Sarah Raplee

Review of Mutts and Mistletoe by Natalie Cox

From the first page of this laugh-out-loud Holiday Romance set in the English countryside, British Author Natalie Cox had me smiling at her heroine’s Ten Things I Hate About Christmas list. Told in the first person, the story gives the reader access to Charlie’s thoughts (gently snarky) as well as her words and actions. This adds an extra layer of humor to the hilarious fish-out-of-water mix.

Charlie’s seemingly stable urban life is overturned in a flash when she discovers her live-in boyfriend has been cheating on her with his personal trainer for over a year. Charlie struggles to make sense of what happened.

At the ripe old age of thirty-one, she’s lost (or had stolen) four years of her life, and she wants to make the most of what remains. But her self-confidence has been shaken. Her romantic heart is battered and bruised. She’d rather be alone than live with someone she can’t trust.

Charlie’s plans to hole up alone over Christmas with a bottle of Chardonnay and watch Audrey Hepburn movies is blown to smithereens when her apartment building blows up from a gas leak. Suffering from a concussion and temporarily homeless, she agrees to stay with her cousin Jez in the country while she recovers. Jez runs a high-end boarding kennel, Cozy Canine Cottages.

Unfortunately, Charlie has no experience with country living, and her only experience with dogs was with her mother’s third ex-husband’s over-indulged and under-disciplined pugs. At five years old, she experienced them chewing up her dolls, constantly trying to hump her leg and getting the attention she craved. Nothing to love there as far as she is concerned.

Charlie finds herself a fish out of water, but being an adventurous soul, she gamely tries to fit in with Jez and Slab (ancient Poodle), Hulk (spunky Pomeranian), Malcom (nervous, deaf Great Dane), Judd (three-time national champion Irish Setter), The Twins (two huge Alaskan Malamute sled dogs) and Peggy (very pregnant beagle).

When Jez’s long-term internet romantic partner gives her two weeks in the Arctic together for Christmas, and none of Jez’s friends can kennel-sit for her, Charlie gamely volunteers. After all, how hard can it be?

Plus, the pay is REALLY good.

When the boiler in the kennel building breaks down, Charlie must bring all the dogs into the house with her so they don’t freeze to death. Jez’s off-beat local friends rally round to help and before she knows it, Charlie begins to appreciate and enjoy the company of canines.

Unfortunately, every time Charlie runs into the handsome-but-prickly vet, he seems to get the impression she’s reckless and irresponsible. But he has such sexy forearms…and she’s learned he had his heart broken, too.

Natalie Cox has an amazing comic voice. Her characters are interesting and relatable, including the dogs. The plot has plenty of fun twists and turns with a heartwarming and happy ending.

I read Mutts and Mistletoe in bed the first time, and woke my husband multiple times laughing out loud. Two weeks later, I read the story again because it was soooo funny. I laughed just as much the second time around.

This book goes on my ‘keeper’ shelf! ~ Sarah McDermed

(First posted 11-26-2019; Still my favorite Holiday Romance. Reading again now...and still laughing 0ut loud!)
