I was born in Manly on the Northern Beaches in Sydney, Australia and apart from marrying my very own prince, the highlight of my life was being accepted into Nursing just before my 16th birthday. It had been a long-time dream which encompassed 37 years of my life. Along with nursing, being married to a Naval Officer for almost 47 years, and posted in numerous places, gave me experiences which I have written into many of my books.

My books are in various genres—Western Historical Romance–both steamy and sweet, Contemporary Romance–steamy and sweet, Male/Male, Australian Outback and City Romance. I also have one menage and one paranormal romance along with two children's books. As I said earlier, I have a rather overactive imagination.

Seasons in the Southern Hemisphere with Susan Horsnell

 My name is Susan Horsnell and I would like to thank Judith and Sarah for inviting me to provide input to their blog.

I’m an Australian who lives in the sunny state of Queensland. With a population of 300, the village I live in now is a few hours north west of Brisbane, Queensland’s capital. We are at the top of a mountain range surrounded by forest. It’s Summer all year round in my neck of the woods, but most of the rest of Australia has seasons just like many countries.

When the Northern Hemisphere is descending into Winter, Australia is awakening to Summer. While temperatures plummet below freezing, ours skyrocket to over 100. Then, six months later, the reverse takes place.

Australia does have small pockets where it snows. In the far south of New South Wales and Northern Victoria is the Snowy Mountains area. This is where Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest mountain can be found- peak at 7,310 feet. There are also snowfalls in Tasmania on the high peaks. The season is a short one and can vary from very little snow to none at all. The majority of the continent’s Winter is cold winds, rain and icy sleet.

Here, where I live, is a different story. In the north of the continent, we have a Wet Season – December to April and a Dry Season – May to November. Our temperature rarely drops below 22 degrees Celcius-71 degrees Fahrenheit. During the wet season we often experience destructive flooding.

Being such a large continent, Australia suffers from large temperature swings and events. Flooding is a common scourge throughout the country as are bushfires and drought. Our food bowl areas really are at the mercy of Mother Nature, and rarely, if ever, experience victory. She is a strong adversary which those on the land are now learning to work with, rather than against. For decades, many have sought to bend Mother Nature to their will. The light is finally dawning that this will never happen.

Being the wife of a senior Naval Officer for 47 years, we have traveled extensively, and lived in all states of Australia as well as overseas. I grew up on the Northern Beaches of Sydney which have no equal (in my opinion). Since retiring after 37 years of Nursing, we have been pulling our RV around the country and many of the books I now write are based on our experiences of these small country towns.

The Outback Australia Series is based out of Bourke NSW and centers around a team who minister to the outback communities with the aid of the Flying Doctor Service.

Australian Winter Memories

Hi,

My name is Susan Horsnell and it's my pleasure to be here on the Romancing the Genres Blog. I'd like to thank Judith for inviting me.

I write Historical Western Romance and under my pen name - A.L. Simpson - I write Steamy Contemporary, M/M and Shapeshifter. I will leave all the links at the end of this post but first, I'm here to talk about Winter in the Northern Hemisphere and Summer here where I am in the Southern Hemisphere.

I'm the eldest daughter of British immigrants, a first generation Australian and citizen of both countries. My parents came to this country in January 1957 and to say they were shocked when they stepped ashore in Sydney would be an understatement.

  

They left England with the snow and cold winds, the rain and sleet, temperatures only just above freezing.

They sailed on the P&O Liner - SS Strathmore on her final voyage for six weeks on the high sighs in some of the roughest conditions the Captain said he had ever encountered. For three days in a row, my father and two other men were the only ones who ventured from their cabins for meals.

 They arrived in Sydney to be greeted by temperatures of over 100 degrees. Quite the farewell and welcome - from one extreme to the other. My dad loved the outdoors and had been a talented gymnast in his day, part of the representative Gymnastics Team for the British Army and after their sponsor settled them in a flat in the Northern Suburbs of Sydney, he decided to hit the beach nearby in Manly. He was greeted with huge crowds, hot sand, sand flies and blue bottles - Welcome to Australia!

So, while those on the northern side of the planet shiver, partake in coffee or alcoholic drinks to keep them warm and keep cosy by the fire, we on the southern side are wearing as few clothes as possible, drinking down ice cold drinks by the gallons and hiding away in the air conditioning. Spare a thought for the Pioneers of our countries who had to deal with harsh weather conditions with none of the modern comforts we all take for granted.

How did the English and Europeans feel when they spent weeks at sea and then put ashore in one of the harshest countries on earth with most of the deadliest and largest insects and reptiles on earth? My mother often says she found it distressing and overwhelming to deal with large, deadly spiders and snakes, creatures she'd never encountered before.

Enjoy your Winter while we enjoy Summer because it's not long before the seasons are reversed. While we don't get the freezing conditions here in Australia (except for a small alpine region in the southern part of NSW and northern part of Victoria) we still feel the harshness of cold, wet and windy Winters. With one exception.....

The northern part of our continent is not subjected to seasons and it's why we live where we do. For us, it either Dry Season - April to November, or Wet season. We are blessed with luscious green countryside and beautiful days.

Over the past year, I have been extremely busy with several new releases under both names and taking the books under a second pen name and placing them under AL. Two pen names and my own name were just too much.

Currently, I am branching into a different genre under AL. This book is a Paranormal Shapeshifter – When Eagles Soar -  to be released some time in June. Romancing the Genre’s is the first to publicly display the cover. I will release widely after this post.

In my personal life, hubby and I have been travelling throughout Australia with our caravan, two Jack Russell dogs and our 26-year-old, extremely opinionated, cockatiel.

Unfortunately, we lost one of our dogs on Monday 24 April but he was 16 years old so had a good innings. We now only have our 13-year-old female Jack Russell, Kelly.

The bird, I am convinced, is going to live forever. At this point in time we have curtailed our overseas activities as we don’t like to leave our pets now they are so old.

When we manage to stay home, we are in the process of renovating our home. It’s beginning to look stunning and downstairs is almost finished.

For the remainder of this year, we have more travel planned, visits to our grandchildren and more renovations. Once I have completed When Eagles Soar, I will be working on the second book in the Carter’s Brothers series – Will.

Susan Horsnell: Australian Author of Western Romance

First up, congratulations to RTG on their 5^th Anniversary. I wish you many more.

My name is Susan Horsnell and I write Western Romance set in the 1800s. I also write Contemporary/Erotic Romance under a pen name. I live in sunny Queensland, Australia and am a retired Nurse. Life has been extremely busy for me over the past twelve months.

I have released four books under a pen name and three new Westerns. Late last year I was involved in an exciting project; I was flattered to be asked to participate.  The premise was, forty-five authors would write 50 Mail Order Bride stories. Each book is set in a different state. Mine was Cora, Mail Order Bride of South Dakota. The books were linked by a prequel. It was the first project of this type and has been enormously successful.

At the moment, I, along with eleven other authors, am working on three ‘mystery’ projects. These books will be totally different to anything on the market. It is an incredibly exciting time for all of us. The books will be released on 7, 14 and 21 October this year so keep an eye out.

Other than my writing, I have been busy taking care of my mum. Dad passed in May last year and after 62 years of marriage, it has been very difficult for her. Hubby and I have also purchased a caravan and a new four-wheel drive with which to tow it. We have been doing a lot of travelling around Australia with our two dogs and extremely opinionated cockatiel.

Overseas travel has been curtailed for the time being as our male dog is very old and now blind. I couldn’t bear it if something happened while we were overseas so we will care for him until his time comes to an end. He loves the travel in the van, the walking and swimming at beaches.

SUMMER READS by Susan Horsnell

Hi and welcome to my first post at this site. I will be a regular contributor on every third Tuesday of the month and I hope you enjoy what I have to offer.

My name is Susan Horsnell and I write Western Romance set in Texas in the 1800s. Mostly sweet, but there are outlaws, robbers, bandits and murderers with pretty gruesome methods of torture and murder. My mentor always says “remind me to never get you offside” haha. I always explain to people who ask - I must have lived a previous life in the great state of Texas as I have such a special affinity with both the state and its people. Hubby and I visited and toured in March and I felt so familiar with everything there. I met so many fabulous Western Romance Authors and hubby and I were hosted in Fort Worth by the brilliant, Caroline Clemmons and her hubby.

My love of Westerns stems from my dad, he would encourage me to watch John Wayne, Audie Murphy etc movies with him and we would discuss the “Goodies” and the “Baddies”. He never did get his wish of seeing the Baddies win!

We live in sunny Queensland, Australia where advertising for the north eastern state promotes it as “beautiful one day, perfect the next.” With our long white sandy beaches and gorgeous warm weather it is paradise in Earth, or so my hubby and I believe. Often there is no one on the more tucked away beaches and we enjoy long walks with our two Jack Russell Terriers who love to swim. We have just returned from 5 hours north of where we live, we spent a week enjoying the luscious surrounds. Being retired has its benefits, we can enjoy all that’s on offer while everyone else is at work.

The theme this month is Summer Reads and as it is pretty much summer all year round here, summer romance fits well. I have so many favourite authors who write romance set in the Mediterranean, The Australian Coast – using our beaches and beautiful weather as their setting. When it is especially hot, I love reading about the blustery and wild weather of Ireland. It can help one to cool down!

At this site you can also peruse my other titles including Blind Acceptance – Winner of a Crowned Heart Award for Excellence and nominated for a Rone Award.  This book uses my personal experience as a nurse at a Centre for the Blind. I was tasked with teaching the newly blinded (mostly through accident as in this book) and their families, how to adjust and cope with everyday living. There were some interesting and at times, funny incidents. 

Whatever book/s you choose to read during your summer, I hope you are carried away on an adventure that delights and excites you. Remember though, if you choose to read around the pool, on a boat out at sea or on a sandy beach – “slip, slop, slap,” as we say in Australia. Slip on a shirt, Slop on some sunscreen and Slap on a hat. Skin cancer is claiming far too many lives, please don’t be one of them.
