The Beginning of The End by Judith Ashley

Hi, I’m Judith Ashley, author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, soul nourishing romantic women’s fiction with light paranormal elements. My stories show you what life could be like if you had a place like The Circle where you are unconditionally accepted, supported and loved. And where, with this support, you make choices to overcome the darkest nights of your life to choose love and light.

At midnight on May 1, 2011 Romancing The Genres (RTG) was born. Our last original content will go live at midnight, May 31, 2025. I’ve bittersweet feelings about moving forward in my life without RTG as a constant. And those bittersweet feelings are contrasted with a plethora of happy ones.

As you read blog posts this month you’ll learn what the Genre-istas and our most supportive guests are going to do in their futures. Do check out each one as some of us are doing ‘giveaways’ to commenters or people who sign up for our newsletters.

One thing on my list for the future is to figure out what to do with the time spent learning the technology of blogging, supporting our Genre-istas and guests and writing own blog posts. I’ve written over 150 posts these past 14 years!

Here’s what I’ll be up to:

~ relaunching my Judith Ashley blog

~ finishing two books (one non-fiction and one fiction) that I started and then Life intervened and … well, I stopped writing except for the most part blog posts

~ teaching through classes and more blog posts the concepts of Dr. William Glasser. I’ve been officially involved with the work of Dr. Glasser since August 1978 when I attended a Basic Intensive Week training, the first step towards Certification in the concepts of Reality Therapy, Choice Theory and their application in our lives.

I’ve been on The William Glasser Institute International teaching faculty since 1980. Currently, within the USA organization, I’m serving as Interim Vice President and President of the Northwest Region. I also chair several committees.

For those of you who have heard of or know about Dr. Glasser, you’ll see bits and pieces of his theory in my fiction books. My non-fiction Staying Sane in a Crazy World is a blending of the wisdom of The Serenity Prayer and Glasser. In these challenging times, Staying Sane provides you with your own Personal Staying Sane plan.

And looping back to my Judith Ashley blog, I wrote a series of blog posts about the ideas of Dr. Denis Waitley “Seeds of Greatness” and Dr. Glasser’s Reality Therapy. Seeing the congruency of their ideas and sharing them was a fascinating topic for me.

Last but not least I will continue to have my JudithAshley.net website. I love clicking on the link and seeing the Home Page. Not that the other pages aren’t good, they are. The images on the Home Page are awesome. Yes, I do like a bit (or a lot) of bling.

You can get the link to download a free copy of Staying Sane in a Crazy World by leaving your email address in comments (as well as any comment you’d like to share). By doing so, you are giving me permission to add you to my mailing list. At best my mailings are bi-monthly and at worst sporadic. Plus you can always “unsubscribe” if you’d prefer not to hear from me in the future.

You can find my books at your favorite e-book vendor as well as through my website www.JudithAshley.net and Windtree Press. Print books are available at Jan’s Paperbacks in Hillsboro, OR and Arte Soleil in Portland, OR. Their addresses are on my website. And be sure to ask your library if you’d prefer to read my books through that resource.

My Favorite Commercials

Hi, I’m Judith Ashley, author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, soul nourishing romantic women’s fiction with light paranormal elements. My stories show you what life could be like if you had a place like The Circle where you are unconditionally accepted, supported and loved. And where, with this support, you make choices to overcome the darkest nights of your life to choose love and light.

Usually I’m not a last minute person, especially when it comes to writing blog posts. However, even though I’ve had this idea for this month’s “Favorite Commercial” theme since the Blog Queens first came up with it, I’m less than 48 hours away from it being published!

Why? Why have I waited and waited and waited?

Well it comes down to ‘fear’.

You might wonder what there is to fear about writing a blog post. I can’t speak for other people. For me it is the fact that blog posts with images are read and remembered more often than those that are not. And in the case of this post, I immediately knew what those images would be.

What’s the problem? Me! I do not like to search on the internet for anything if at all possible. The idea of scrolling through images of products or in this case pictures that would illustrate this post is my idea of a personal hell. Well, that may be exaggerating a bit…but not by much.

So, here I am now a little more than 12 hours before this post goes live (yes, I’ve come back and am now tweaking it). I have found images that if you’ve seen the commercials, you should recognize. Or at least I hope you do. And FYI: the second commercial was Much harder to find anything remotely resembling the commercial so you'll need to use your imagination for that one.

Once upon a time, I was watching television with the sound muted (because I have closed captioning and keep it on) and there is a buffalo on the screen. I will say my curiosity was pricked but that was all. No idea what the commercial was about which is pretty normal for me.

Over several months I saw the same commercial and was dumbfounded that any company would just show a buffalo in a restaurant…at least that finally registered.

One day it dawned on me that this buffalo had wings!

And I have heard of Buffalo Wild Wings! So, in this case, it took several months before I connected everything together. And I do remember the company…never been to one of their restaurants and I’m not sure I’ve ever actually eaten a Buffalo Wild Wing but I do find these commercials  fun and I find myself smiling as I watch them.

The second commercial that I smile when it comes on … actually I often chuckle and voice the dialogue … has a dog sitting in a chair and a guy on a sofa. This one I had no problems deciphering but had a enough of a challenging time finding images, I’ve decided not to put them up.

Don’t know what it is yet?

Here’s a hint. When the dog says “Vaase”, at least to me, I find that funny. After numerous opportunities to see this commercial, I still laugh and repeat both the dog’s lines and his human’s. If you’ve not seen the commercial, you may need to sound it out in order to recognize the humor.

I do understand that many people no longer watch “regular” t.v. that has commercials.

However, if you do, please do share your favorites

And be on the lookout all of August as the Genre-istas who do watch “regular” t.v. share their favorite commercials.

Spoiler alert: neither televisions, streaming nor commercials are featured in any of my books.

Living to be 100 years old? Hmm...

Romancing The Genres’ theme this month is “What You Look Forward To As You Age?” Being in the eighth decade of my life I’ve given this theme a lot of thought.

Deposit Photo Image

Growing up I did think about, even wanted to live to be 100 years old. I thought in terms of all the world and personal events I’d see and be a part of. My earliest memories are of the mid-1940’s. I remember seeing my mom cry when, I later realized, my dad must have gotten his draft papers. I remember my brother, Jim, as a small child, toddling around. He was 3 years younger than me.

Spoiler alert: I wasn’t thinking of living to be 100 years old then. I saw my parents and grandparents (late 20’s and 50’s respectively) as Really old.

I remember when people celebrated their 100 birthday, they were written up in the newspaper, interviewed on the radio, received a letter of congratulations from the President of the United States…and then when television became a major form of communication, they were interviewed by reporters and even Johnny Carson.

Maybe it was being ‘noticed’ or ‘special’ that appealed to me. Growing up in the 1940’s and 1950’s being a girl was not something that supported any of us living outside society’s rules for us. I could be a nurse (not a doctor), a secretary (not the boss), a teacher (not the principal much less the superintendent) and I could get married and support my husband’s career. What heady stuff, living to be 100 years old! And most of those people reaching that age were women!

How I wish Girl Power was
Alive and Well in the
1940's, 1950's, 1960's
and more

I do remember my dad explaining to me why I was going to college. Yes, it was to get an education so I could be a public school teacher, but it was more about my having a profession I could fall back on if my husband wasn’t able to support/take care of his family. Do notice the pronouns.

I loved history. My college advisor said I would never get a teaching job as a history teacher because those jobs went to men because men could also coach sports. Remember Title 9 wasn’t in play then so there weren’t school sports programs for girls or women.

But I digress. Back to living to be 100!

My maternal aunt, Helen, lived to a few months from her 105th birthday. I was excited to spend time with her when we gathered to celebrate her 100th! I was full of questions and she patiently answered them. The two that made a lasting impression on me were

Deposit Photo Image

+What has changed the most in your life time? Transportation. She was born in 1909 and the automobile was not everywhere as it is today. She lived to see jet airplanes, rockets and people on the moon.

+ What advice do you have for me? Life happens. It has ups and downs. Take it as it comes and you’ll be happier.

Now in my 8th decade what do I look forward to?

Not the same things I did when younger. I no longer dream of celebrating my 100 birthday.

Why? Because I’m not fond of all the technical advancements so seeing more of those are not an enticement to me. I’ve no interest in populating Mars or any other planet. I am interested in making Earth more user friendly with cleaner air, water, food.

I’ve reset my goal to live to be 100 years old to living to 96. Why 96?

Queen Elizabeth died at 96.
Roselyn Carter died at 96.
Angela Lansbury died at 96.
Katherine Hepburn died at 96.

I admire each of these extraordinary women.

Deposit Photo Image
Also at 96 (2037), I will have lived long enough to see my great grands graduate from high school (2032 and 2034) with a few years to spare. My granddaughters will be in their 40’s and well on their way to their life goals. I expect many of my friends and other family members will have already died. That’s not something I look forward to, it is something I accept is part of what makes up my life.

So in the intervening years I look forward to

Reclaiming and maintaining my physical health.

Enjoying each day to the best of my ability. I will admit that on higher pain level days finding that joy is a bit, well actually, quite a bit more difficult.

Staying focused on my spiritual path because when I do that everything else falls more easily into place.

What is my spiritual path? The foundation of The Sacred Women’s Circle novels. I’ve learned over the decades of my lifetime that there is more than one path to The Divine.

In my books, I share how seven women from divergent backgrounds come together and find a shared path. A path where each of them claims a spiritual practice that sustains them through various life challenging times.

Domestic violence, breast cancer, infidelity, abandonment, injury, loss are part of each of our everyday lives. How do you cope with these life events? Check out The Sacred Women’s Circle novels to see how Lily, Elizabeth, Diana, Ashley, Hunter, Gabriella and Sophia dealt with them in their lives.

Simple? Easy? Maybe - Maybe Not

The following post is adapted from one that first appeared on The Glasser Institute for Choice Theory - US website in 2023.

I’ve been on the William Glasser International teaching faculty since 1980. During that time numerous people who are taking the early phases of the certification training have commented along the lines of What’s the big deal? This is easy? And then, to their surprise it isn’t.

What I know is true is that life, in and of itself, is simple.

We have basic physical needs: food, sleep, preferably shelter, safety.

We have the need for connection, to be useful or important. We have the need to have choices and as Dr. Glasser taught, we have the need to have fun because that’s how we learn.

Most of us get up in the morning with an idea or even a clear picture of how we want our day to go. We have our schedule or agenda or to do list or calendar ---however you organize your days. Then we take action. At the end of the day, our list is finished, our view of how our day would go is manifested. We have a sense of accomplishment.

From Deposit Photo

What we also know is that simple is not always easy.

A fact is we don’t always have power to keep a monkey wrench from being thrown into the cogs of our daily schedule. And the list of those monkey wrenches is long because for most of us, those simple days require cooperation from someone or something beyond our control.

The washing machine works. The car has enough gas for whatever errands or business we need to do.

The weather cooperates with any outdoor tasks

Money is in the bank

The contractor, cleaner, auto mechanic (you get the idea) is on time and does a quality job

Your partner, children, employees, boss all do their part so that what you are doing is easily and simply completed.

And that’s when things run amok, when simple isn’t easy. Our simple day becomes harder because it depends on other people to show up and things like the car or appliances to run.

The reality is, unless what we need is totally controlled by us, there is no guarantee of an easy day. We are at the mercy of outside forces.

The Serenity Prayer talks about “accepting the things I cannot change” and since one of those “things” is someone else, we have to find our own simple. And that isn’t always easy.

From Deposit Photo

A recent “aha” for me: Those things over which I have no control and that I have little or no real interest in much less passion about are easy for me to accept and even ignore.

What about those things I do care about? Those things I have a passion for and interest in? That’s much more challenging.

It can be done. I’ve proved that to myself more than once in the last couple of days!

How?

One part is simple. I know I have no control over other people much less the weather, electricity, or machinery. There are times I can simply say to myself “reschedule” or “how important is this in the relative scheme of things” and I’m able to let it go.

What I’ve learned over the years is that I first need to take care of myself before I am of any use to anyone else. I will admit I’m not perfect on living up to that “knowing”.

Here are a couple of tips I’ll pass on to you

+ Much of what makes our life “hard” or “stressful” is of our own making

+ Worry is not our friend. Fear is but worry isn’t.

+ Making sure to take care of ourselves is vital, especially if other people rely on us for anything. The airplane adage of making sure you put on your oxygen mask before helping someone else has applications beyond flying.

+ Do trust your inner voice

+ Do trust your body. Sometimes the only way for it to tell us to slow down and take better care of ourselves is to knock us down. When that happens, take your time getting up or the next knock down will be more serious.

+ Pay attention to your self-talk. Are you encouraging, supporting, trusting, respecting yourself or are you criticizing, blaming and complaining. Everyone does better, ourselves included, when we care about and for ourselves.

+ Acknowledge the loss if that is what’s hard. Grief is normal and useful in that it gives us time to stop. If possible, remember the blessings. My longtime friend (July 1980) has dementia and as I’m writing this, I learned she no longer knows who I am. We had such fun and many adventures attending various Glasser conferences around the world and over the decades. And her loss of herself as the person she was has been a slow process. Remembering those adventures is bittersweet and while the tears do well, the ache in my heart eases.

Take the time to find what works for you. Look at the whole of what you cannot control to see if there is a piece, perhaps almost minuscule, that you can. And when you do find it, claim it and use it.

While our road in life will still have bumps and maybe even crevices, by claiming all that we really can control, we’ll find it easier to navigate.

Staying Sane in A Crazy World goes into the above information in more detail. By following the process outlined in the book using your own situation simple may not become Easy and it will become Easier.

I’ve got a free handout on “Plan making” available on my website under “Resources” www.JudithAshley.net. The Plan Making Handout is also included in my book.

Beware: The Internet and Eternity

The week after Labor Day Weekend I received an email from a woman in Ohio asking whether there was a Women of the 14th Moon Gathering in her area.

Why did she contact me? She'd Googled "Women of the 14th Moon - Spiritual" and this is what showed up.

Aug 3, 2012 — Women of the 14 th Moon is about women coming together: leaving husbands, children, significant others, jobs – their responsibilities behind.

Yep, my Romancing The Genres blog post from 2012.

In case you are curious, click the link in the Google search and voila, it will magically appear.

The World or Some of It in a Blog

Hi, I’m Judith Ashley, author of The Sacred Women’s Circle series, soul nourishing romantic women’s fiction with light paranormal elements. My stories show you what life could be like if you had a place like The Circle where you are unconditionally accepted, supported and loved. And where, with this support, you make choices to overcome the darkest nights of your life to choose love and light.

In Dr. Glasser’s Choice Theory, Blue is the color of the Real World, that which is but is altered by our senses and perception. This post is Real. I am at my computer typing it into Word so I can copy and paste into Blogger and click “publish”. I spent an hour or so yesterday looking back at blog posts I’ve written to put up today and then decided against that and here I am.

Words don’t always come easily when I want to write. Other days my fingers can hardly keep up with the stream flowing forth from my brain or wherever the creativity originates.

What is it I want to say?

I am amazed that in less than 90 days Sarah Raplee McDermed and I put together Romancing The Genres. We brainstormed and came up with romance sub-genres, we searched for authors within them, we invited authors we knew, authors we’d heard about, authors we found. In other words, we did the work.

Who answered the call and is still with us to the end?

Paty Jager

Diana McCollum

Barbara Binns

So the five of us or 25% of the original 20 will be sharing their thoughts and ideas about writing, blogging and in some cases, life.

When we launched in May 2011 we had Canadian and New Zealand authors. Over the years authors from Australia and the UK joined us.

Bronwen Evans – New Zealand

Margaret Tanner - Australia

Opal Carew - Canada

Erica Hayes - UK

Susan Horsnell - Australia

Lauren James - Australia

Michelle Sommers - Australia

Madelle Morgan – Canada

Cassandra O’Leary – Australia

Luanna Stewart - Canada

One of the highlights of my life has been meeting authors from around the world, keeping in touch with them when they moved in a different direction. You’ll meet some of them this month as they’ve been gracious enough to join us one more time.

You can find my books at your favorite e-book vendor as well as through my website www.JudithAshley.net and Windtree Press. Print books are available at Jan’s Paperbacks in Hillsboro, OR and Arte Soleil in Portland, OR. Their addresses are on my website.
