Series and Settings!

By: Marcia King-Gamble

www.lovemarcia.com

Through the years, series books have maintained their popularity. There's something the reader likes about familiar settings and revisiting the characters they've come to love.

With that in mind, three years ago, I partnered with bestselling author Sandra Kitt (whom I have admired forever, and who was my inspiration to start writing.) Together we created By Design.

https://www.amazon.com/Design-Store-Book-1-ebook/dp/B078K5JPRS/ref

If you've never heard of Sandra, let me tell you a little bit about her. Mind you, this is just skimming the tip of the iceberg.  Sandra was the first black author to publish with Harlequin. In addition to being a talented writer, she  is a talented graphic artist and has exhibited in several corporate collections, as well as at the Museum of African American Art in L.A.  She has also designed cards for UNICEF, and illustrated two books for the late science writer, Dr. Isaac Asimov.  As if that's not enough, Sandra is the former Information Specialist in astronomy & astrophysics at the Hayden Planetarium, American Museum of Natural History in New York.

Anyway, this amazingly talented woman and I joined forces to brainstorm and create a setting for a series we hoped would appeal to not only the fashionistas of the world, but to those readers who could relate to losing their jobs for one reason or another and were being forced to start over.  We'd thought with downsizing being such a common thing these days, readers would connect.

And, so, By Design was co-written; a story about Elle Stanford who loses a lucrative job and is forced to start over in retail as a store associate. Our setting was the world of retail, and  the fresh air that a  humble associate and former marketer was able to breathe into a failing store.

H.E. Caldwell, a black owned, Philadelphia store on a downward spiral, came to life from the embers of a "what if." We're romance writers after all , so of course, not only was there intrigue and  conflict, but in the telling of the story, romance prevailed and  Elle found her man, Miles Bradshaw.

Following By Design, and because Sandra was busy with other projects, I penned By Heart, a novella,  again using H.E. Caldwell's as the setting. This time there was  a Valentine's theme, and a jump off character, Cyndy Lawsen, who'd been introduced in the first book, and who hated Valentine's Day and anything associated with Cupid, found her man. You can pick up the ebook here:

  https://www.amazon.com/Heart-H-Caldwells-Book-ebook/dp/B08CRC78W1/ref.

Newly released, last month, and again as part of the H. E. Caldwell series, is By Golly, another solo venture. This novella takes place during the holiday season. All of our couples are now having issues and on the brink of breaking up. Will the magic of the season bring them back together?

https://www.amazon.com/Golly-H-Caldwell-ebook/dp/B08R5GN5B8/ref

Here is an excerpt:

A trio of musicians tucked away in the corner of the room struck up Kool & and the Gang’s Celebration. Elle wished she had something to celebrate. It was awkward enough Miles’ unexpected arrival with Heather Hamilton in tow. Had she brought her best friend, CeCe, as her plus one, it might have softened the blow.  At least she would have someone to vent to.  But venting would have to wait until later when she got back to the hotel. Regardless of the hour she would be getting her bestie on the phone.

At least Jay and Cyndy were here. They’d have her back. The executives had started playing musical chairs and were visiting with employees.

“Dance?” Jay asked, coming to her rescue and whisking her away.

“What took you so long?” she asked, allowing Jay to twirl her.

Miles asked Heather to dance and joined them on the dance floor. Parker two-stepped Cyndy. That left Monique at the table alone, but not for long. She was rescued by a fellow store manager.

As the beat picked up, employees of every rank and file flooded the dance floor and it quickly became crowded.   Jay brought Elle up hard against him. “So, is Brett Anderson out of the closet?” he asked.

Elle chuckled. “Ask him. I don’t gossip about employees.”

“Sure, you do.” Laughing Jay twirled her around again. They were each other’ s confidant and Elle often told him more than she should.

“Cutting in,” a deep voice said from behind them. A heavy hand settled on Jay’s shoulder.  Jay was about to tell the person to get lost when he realized it was his boss he was about to blow off. He graciously handed Elle over.  Miles and Elle needed to work out their issues. There was still a lot of love between them. A blind sugar mouse could see that.

“She’s all yours,” were Jay’s parting words. Elle was a vision in her shimmering gold gown as Miles expertly led her around.

“You look lovely,” Miles said,  his hands on the small of Elle’s back.  “New dress?”

“Just a little something I picked up in Formalities.”

I hope that you will enjoy By Golly and the other books in the series. May 2021 be good to you and may you realize your dreams!

To New Beginnings!

By: Marcia King-Gamble

www.lovemarcia.com

You’ve probably heard me say this before. At the beginning of a new year I never make resolutions. What I do is create a vision board. The board serves as my map as the year unfolds.

There is something cathartic about looking through magazines and finding words that express the way I feel and that represent me. I get joy out of clipping out graphics and images of places that I would like to visit, hobbies that represent me, or events that I enjoy, even things I would like to learn or improve on in the coming year.

It all brings me Joy.

This 2021, my board is still a work in progress. But as I snip and cut out pictures and sayings, I find myself becoming more and more optimistic and hopeful.

For those of you who have followed me over the years, you know there is usually a theme to my board. My boards represent my life with emphasis on travel, exercise, books, wine and food.  All these things bring out the best in me.

These themes continue this year,  but with a focus on joyful living and celebrating small moments. I am hopeful about many things this year and grateful to be here. This year, I plan on brushing up my Spanish. It’s a language that speaks to me and one I used to be fairly good at but have let go to the wayside. Spanish is considered the language of love because its passionate and sensual.  And shouldn’t we be passionate about everything we do? Without passion life wouldn’t be a whole lot of fun.

I am hopeful about many things this year. I am hopeful to put more passion back into my life. I am hopeful that our country can heal, and that people can get back to work and living their best lives. I am hopeful that we can travel again and see family and friends.

More importantly, I am hopeful that we have used this time to reflect and get our priorities in order. Having gone through an experience like no other, we should realize that we are really a small speck in a vast universe. We rent space on this earth. We own nothing. And without health we have nothing.

That said, we should be living our most meaningful lives, no matter how insignificant we think that life might be.

Writing to me represents living my best life.
To that end, I celebrated 2021 with a brand-new release.

Here is an excerpt from By Golly:

Elle felt and sensed Miles’ presence behind her. She could smell that citrusy scent and feel his warm breath on the nape of her neck. Even though her heart thudded, she remained resolute. Miles’s hands caressed the back of her arms before he turned her to face him. Now she didn’t know what to believe.

“Carrie’s divorcing her husband. When she found out Justin was in trouble, she reached out to me, pitching the idea of getting back together, and providing a united front for the sake of our son.”

Elle spun around facing him. “You must have given it some consideration. You broke up with me.”

“I did not. I simply asked for time and space. We were both doing a lot of traveling. I was dealing with a troubled child and an ex pressuring me. Plus, we were in the middle of negotiating an international deal. There was a lot on my plate. I needed to work through some things.”

“Can we talk about Justin?” Elle said, switching the direction of the conversation. Miles had put her through a lot of misery. Had he had this discussion with her up front, perhaps she would be a lot more forgiving.

“Sure. We might as well sit. I have the feeling this might take a while. Taking her by the hand, Miles guided her back toward the couch. “What did my son have to say for himself?”

“Well, it seems he thinks you sent him off to school to get rid of him.”

“Oh, please. Justin knows better. We talked about it. He knows why I sent him to the academy. Couldn’t have a housekeeper bringing up my son.”

“Apparently, you didn’t do a very good job of explaining. He seems to think he’ll be going to live with you and your ex, and you’ll be one big happy family.”

“He’s wrong about that.”

“I did get him to promise me he’d go to therapy.”

Miles’ head snapped back and forth. Hie squinted at her.  “And why would my son need therapy?”

“Because he has problems you and I can’t fix. He’s hurting and doesn’t understanding why you and his mom divorced.” She held up a finger before Miles could interrupt. “It’s quid pro quo. Justin stops getting high and goes to therapy. You don’t send him to rehab. Now all you have to do is talk the principal, head of school, or whatever they’re called these days, into not expelling Justin.”

Miles reached over and took her cheeks between his palms and kissed her on the lips. “If that’s all it would take, you’re a miracle worker.” Before she knew it, he deepened the kiss, and those too familiar feelings came flooding back and she was winding her arms around his neck, relishing his warmth and drowning in the citrusy smell of him.

A knock on the door, drew them apart before things ricocheted out of control and she forgot she was still mad at him.

“What Lousy timing,” Miles muttered, heading off to answer the door.

Why Good Girls Like Bad Boys

By Marcia King-Gamble
www.Lovemarcia.com

Call me risk averse, but I’ve never been a fan of bad boys. Yet there are women who love them. And books about bad boys sell. Must be that “I’m going to fix him thing.” To me, that’s way too much work. Come to me fully formed. I’m not looking for a project or to remake anyone. I’m looking for a man.

When I see muscles and an open shirt with ample chest hair peeking through, and too-tight jeans, I run for the hills. I’m not into trouble. But put that kind of guy on a book cover, and watch those books fly off the shelves. Sales are guaranteed to soar.

A cowboy in a ten-gallon hat seated on a stallion gets readers’ attention.  The construction guy in a hard hat is a definite seller Have him lose his shirt and women will buy.

But readers also tend to go for kind. He might look like a bad boy, but he better be a reformed one. Readers might go for the outer trappings of a hunky guy, but they also go for integrity and heroic qualities. That’s why in romance novels the male love interest is called a hero.

Which brings me to my new release, a novella,, titled By Heart. https://amzn.to/3fi4Gg3. You may remember, By Design, released a couple of years back with co-author Sandra Kitt. This time, it’s Cyndy Lawsen’s story. Cyndy was Elle Stanford’s co-worker and friend. They were associates at H.E Caldwell’s in the gift department ETC.

Cyndy’s life undergoes a change when sculptor, Jacques Moreau demands to see the newly promoted manager. But Jacques is no villain, although initially he comes across as such. The villain in this case, is Tanisha Shaw, the manager of the neighboring department, Between the Sheets. Tanisha is after Cyndy’s commissions and the hero’s heart. She will do almost anything to discredit Cyndy and move in on Jacques.

As you can see, villains come in different shapes and forms and aren’t necessarily men.

Here is an excerpt from By Heart.
“He’s not going to buy squat from you. Bet you I could get him over to Between the Sheets and spending some bucks.” “Tanisha said, pushing Cindy aside and setting off to stalk Cyndy’s potential buyer. Cyndy wasn’t about to let that happen. She cut Tanisha off mid- path.
“You have customers waiting. I can handle this.” Cyndy turned to the customer in the expensive – looking camel coat.  Peter helping another woman, smothered a grin and went back to showing his customer an intricate cuckoo clock.  “May I help you?”
The man set down the handmade quilt he’d been fingering. and raised his head. Their eyes connected, and Cyndy’s heart rate went up a beat. “Jacques what are you doing here?”
I was in the neighborhood and thought I’d stop by to see you.”
Cyndy’s tongue felt as if it was tied in a double loop. She pulled herself together in time to say. “Did your package arrive on time?”
“It did, Cheri. I can’t thank you enough. We are still on for tonight, oui?”
   “We are.”
Conscious of Tanisha gawking. Cyndy linked an arm through Jacques and, led him to the side. “Pay no attention to that woman. She sees only dollar signs. Her goal is to get you over to Between the Sheets and spending money.”
Jacques flashed his whites, his eyebrows jiggling.  “Between the sheets. Now that’s an idea.”

Coming soon is a collaboration with 13 other authors with individual short stories. We hope that you will join us at Last Chance Beach. There, sand, blue skies and romance are definitely on. Who won't like a second chance at love? You can pe-order  here https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08CV3GN3R/

In my story, One Last Shot, the villain appears to be a former celebrity photographer, who needs just one good shot to get back into the business. As luck would have it, he’s renting a house right next door to a sitcom star hiding out from a major scandal. All these stories are a definite beach reads and should help lighten an unforgettable summer.  So take the ferry  to Last Chance Beach, grab a beach chair, and get comfortable. Here, villains turn into love interests and hearts aren’t broken.

Do you have  a villain you love to hate?  Then why not enter the Florida Romance Writers Golden Palm Contest?  You still have time.

Here's to those Holly, Jolly, Holiday Reads!

By: Marcia King-Gamble
www.lovemarcia.com

Dear Readers:

Don’t you just love this time of year?  I know I do. There’s something about the holidays that puts me in a good mood, and makes me hopeful that the upcoming year will be even better.

When the shopping, baking (not that I bake,) and festivities are all over, there is nothing like curling up at the end of the day with a good holiday romance. As a reader, and a romance writer, I am a sucker for a good love story where love survives despite all odds.

In late December of last year, I released one those feel-good stories. It was novella 1 of The Ring Series.  This novella was titled Ring in the Holidays and of course it came with a festive cover. Do you think my cover artist did the holidays justice?

Here’s a soundbyte of Ring in the Holiday:

It's the holiday season and Rianna Brown's friends are all 'booed up.' Rianna, a flight attendant, is the only single one left of her crowd. A long, dreary holiday season lies ahead; a season with no man. Then along comes childhood nemesis, bad boy, Stefie Davis, Stefan has grown into a knee-buckling kinda guy; the kind that would make a woman lose her panties He's an investment banker with a continental lifestyle and he's bound and determined to win Rianna' s heart if she'll let him.

But is Rianna willing to let bygones be bygones and go for it? In three weeks, Stefan will be heading out of town, and she'll be left working for an ailing airline, and single again.

Earlier this year, and intended to be another holiday romance, (meant to be released for Valentine’s, but didn’t happen,) was Ring in the Moment. This story is about a couple already in love but torn apart by a perceived betrayal.  Readers seem to love this cover. What do you think?

Here’s the soundbyte of Ring in the Moment:

Keisha Wilson gets the surprise of her life when her boyfriend, Brian O'Connor dumps her, and right before one of the biggest holidays of the year. Brian gives no explanation, and although Keisha is hurt, she has no choice but to move on. What else can she do?

Brian has never stopped loving Keisha, but he's reluctant to drag her into a mess. A past indiscretion has come back to haunt him, and until he can get that situation handled, he's in no position to make a commitment. But when Brian realizes that Keisha isn't going to sit home and mope, and he may lose her, he decides it's time to take action.

This holiday season you’ll be able to read these two novellas, bound as one, and both for a bargain price.   Continue to check Amazon or Barnes and Noble, as it should be released Mid-November, or you can purchase them separately now at the below links:

And don’t forget to Ring in the Holidays, this weekend with talented, UK Author Sue Moorcroft. Please be sure to logon to www.romancingthegenres.blogspot.com and read what she has to say. I thoroughly enjoy her humor and her books. You will too.

Have a Magical Holiday Season! Make the Ring  Series your gift to you!

Marcia

Ring in the New Year with a Good Read!

By: Marcia King-Gamble
www.lovemarcia,com

I’m starting out 2019 with a shout out to all the readers and writers of contemporary romance, especially those that have pushed the limits, and dealt with issues readers face in their everyday life.

Back in the day, contemporary romance authors were restricted as to what they could write. It was feared that readers would be turned off by reading about serious issues like date rape, autism, abuse, substance dependency etc. It was a constant fight to even have those kinds of stories read by an editor or agent. You would receive an abrupt, “No, thank you,” if there was even an allusion of anything involving the above.

While most of us read to escape, readers engage better given some aspects of realism remain in the story.  It took some time, and probably Indie sales statistic for publishers to realize that they better join the modern age. While readers want to be carried away, they also want relatable reading material. And so, the flawed hero and heroine came to be. Apropos actually, because aren’t love stories about people overcoming all odds to find love? And aren’t these stories about heroes and heroines who change and grow?

Lucky for us, we had talented authors like Jodi Picoult, Helen Hoang and Kati Gardner willing to push the boundaries and tackle these sensitive issues. Of course, Grand Dame, La Nora also pioneered these efforts. Yes, that would be bestselling author, Nora Robert and ,her groundbreaking novel, Dance Upon the Air, released in 2001.

I’ve always been a fan of the contemporary novel, it’s what I grew up on, and in fact it’s what I write. Growing up, the heroes, heroines, and settings of the Mills and Boon novel, opened up a whole new world to me.  Through the decades, I followed the evolution of the alpha male and the virginal female.  I watched the male become a little softer and a lot more beta. I watched his lady love become more assertive,  and a lot more independent. Over time, heroes and heroines of contemporary romance grew and evolved to match readers in the real world.

As a writer, I have always chosen to tell stories that have depth to them. Come Fall, one of my earlier novels  is about a woman accused of sexual harassment who  goes off to Venice to find her self and  heal.  Jade, one of my bigger books has a heroine who takes off to Vietnam in search of her real mother after she discovers that her father is a Vietnam vet who impregnated a local woman.
,

Flash forward to 2018 and book 5 in the Eighty-Eight Mississippi series, titled Magnolia Moments. This story features heroine, Danielle Lewis who leaves her job to come to Eighty-Eight when her father becomes ill. She temporarily takes over running an inn where executive recruiter, Bryce Maynard is staying, Bryce is in Eighty-Eight in search of the mother who gave him away.    Here is an excerpt from Magnolia Moments: https://amzn.to/2F7u9d4

“Morgan’s waiting. Won’t want to keep her, now,” Dani said, sniffing.
“She can wait. Let’s get one thing straight. I have absolutely no interest in that woman beyond getting the information I need. Now give me a kiss.”
Dani initially seemed reluctant to even get close. Eventually she relaxed in his arms. And as usual, what was meant to be a meeting of the lips, segued into a heart-shattering kiss of mega proportions. Bryce felt as if he’d been zapped by lightening. He was actually shaking. His inclination was to take Dani to bed right there and then, but the teacher was waiting downstairs, and he would have to put passion on hold. “We’re not done,” he said, putting Dani away from him.

Rounding out the year was my most recent release, Ringing in the Holidays.  A story about the bad boy who gets his dream girl after years of feeling not good enough. For many years Stefan Davis fought to overcome a speech impediment. Stefan, now a successful investment banker, is back in town on business. Except his business might mean his dream girl loses her job. Here is an excerpt from Ringing in the Holidays. https://amzn.to/2BVngs4

“How did you find this place?” Rianna asked, gazing through the gauze netting at what looked to be several well-heeled clientele. She’d spotted the politically incorrect fur jackets draped over the backs of chairs, and the ladies’ necks draped in expensive pearls and diamonds.
“A friend recommended it,” Stefan said. “I told him I needed a special place with lots of holiday spirit to take a very special lady.”
Rianna felt her cheeks heat up. She managed a mumbled, “Thank you,” and swept off her tam, shaking out her curls. Stefan swept a wisp of escaping hair out of her eyes.
Things were moving way faster than she was comfortable with. She was just starting to process her feelings for her best friend’s brother, and trying to figure out whether the growing attraction could be attributed to a holiday season when no one wanted to be alone. Were these genuine feelings or brought on by nostalgia? For so much of her young life she had resented him. How could she want him so badly now that he’d become an adult?

Wrapping Up the Year!

By: Marcia King-Gamble
www.lovemarcia.com

We’re wrapping up yet another year, and I’ve always found it a good time to reflect. I call  December my woulda, coulda, shoulda month. No time for regrets, I think about  my “didas”, and I am grateful for good health, because without it, I have nothing.

2017 was a grim year for so many. Floods in Texas, Hurricanes in Florida, Fires in California. Many lost lives.  Many lost homes. Many were despondent. My heart goes out to all those displaced people. But this too shall pass, unbelievable as it may seem..

There’s much to be grateful for.  Whenever I think I have it bad, there are others who have it far worse.  I have a home to live in. I have food on the table. I have supportive friends and family. I have good health. When I get down, I remind myself to stay positive. I focus on what I've accomplished. The good things that have happened,  and will continue to happen; the small difference I made in one person's life.

What did you accomplish this year? What were the highlights?  What made you smile? Where did you go? What did you do? Who did you help? Did you contribute to making our little world a better place?

Every year I start out promising to do one act of kindness a day. Just one small thing  can make someone smile and feel special. It can simply be letting a person ahead of me in the grocery store line, or thanking a person for making my life a little better. It could be the guy who picks up my trash or the stranger who holds open a door. Everyone needs and wants to feel special.  Sometimes, extrovert that I am, I cross the room at a party to speak to the lone wallflower. I try to pay attention and be aware that not everyone is as comfortable in a crowded room as me.

Opening your heart, and giving of yourself shouldn’t be something that happens once a year. And giving doesn’t have to be money. Giving of your time can be equally as valuable. Volunteers are needed at so many places. Find  a cause that you're passionate about and volunteer.  Mentoring young kids (our future) is a wonderful way of paying your good luck forward.

Start out each new year with a list of things you want to see, do, and accomplish. This is where a vision board comes in handy. As many of you know,  I design a vision board every year.  As I write, I’m reviewing the one I designed in January of 2017. It's a perfect reminder of what I accomplished and what I did not.  Did life take me in a different direction? How could I have done it better?

My 2017 vision board had a newspaper article that I'd like  to share.  It’s titled the 2017 Starter Guide and it has a  list of manageable goals. Here are a few  that resonate with me and are easily transferable to 2018:

·         Learn to say no
·         Get enough sleep
·         Don’t go to bed in a state of emotional turmoil
·         Offer to help
·         Do mundane and difficult tasks first
·         Laugh and have fun
·         Have a thankful heart and stop complaining
·         Engage in physical activity
·         Choose your friends wisely
·         Do what is right
·         Compromise
·         Take responsibility for your own actions
·         Look for ways in which to demonstrate kindness

When it comes to physical activity, I’m a huge proponent of exercise. Exercise has gotten me through some of the more challenging experiences of my life. Endorphins are a natural opiate, and there are so many benefits to moving your butt.  Exercise keeps you looking young, and it  keeps you positive. Keeping those endorphins flowing are better than any prescription drug I know. It manages depression, high blood pressure, diabetes, and just think, you’re burning calories and losing weight at the same time.

The end of the year is also the perfect time for “feel good stories.” I’m releasing  two in conjunction with well-known authors, and I'm excited.

The first is novella number 5 in The Holiday Sparkle series; another collaboration with talented author Bettye Griffin . Last year the first in the series was Love on Lakeview Drive, followed by Naughty in New York, Holiday in Houston and lastly, Loose in Las Vegas. This year we bring you Rockin' The Rockies.

Novella number 5, Rockin' The Rockies  is set in Aspen and Denver. Yes, the rented red dress makes another reappearance and it again transforms lives. This time, my heroines experience love at a charity event, and it's told from the two heroines points-of-view.

My second release, penned with author, Sandra Kitt, is titled ‘By Design.’  Welcome to the world of the retail store and all its intrigue. This series starts off on the east coast, Fashionistas get ready. Please check Amazon and Barnes and Noble for these releases in the next week or two, but certainly before Christmas.  Be sure to add both to your holiday shopping.

In closing, I'd like to thank you for your support and wish you a safe and happy holiday. Keep that attitude of gratitude going, and good things will come to you.

My wish for you in 2018 is to have all your dreams come true.

Romantically Yours,

Marcia King-Gamble,
