Which Witch Novel is Your Favorite?

Happy fall and Halloween! When spooks or ghosts or spirits (not sure which one is correct) walk the earth, and witches fly by in the night.

I had never read any kind of witch 
paranormal books. And then one day, I was on my lunch hour from work and walking in Safeway. Near the checkout stand was a rack of books. One cover in particular caught my eye, “Breath of Magic”, by Teresa Medeiros, and I bought it.

This book is what I would call a light paranormal. Not a lot of blood and gore, in fact hardly any. Puritan witch, Arian Whitewood gets more than she bargains for during a witch hunt and she and the broom she is riding on, crash land into the 20^th century and the arms of the hero. A love story mixed with time-travel and magic! I fell in love!

After reading “Breath of Magic”, I bought the second book, “Touch of Enchantment”, and followed the journey of Arian’s daughter, Tabitha Lennox, from the 20^th century back seven centuries into the past, and straight into the path of a horse ridden by a chain-mailed warrior.

Now I was totally hooked on paranormal romance. Witches are the best!! Who doesn’t love magic?

I’ve read many books since those first two containing a witch heroine or hero, magic and sometimes time-travel. I’ve loved them all.

This summer I read Nora Roberts trilogy starting with the first in the series “Dark Witch”. You just can’t go wrong with a book written by Nora, excellent series.

My very favorite book I’ve read would have to be “The Witch’s Daughter”, by Paula Brackston. I read this book last year. I will always keep this book. Not only is “The Witch’s Daughter “a well written story, it’s written in first person, which I normally don’t care for. I was drawn right into the story from page one.

And yet, the story drew me in, kept me captivated and I forgot all about first person.

The magic of these books led me to write about... you guessed it, Witches!

“What if” game seeded my love for Time Travel Romance

Have you ever played the “what if” game? Like after an important job interview or a book pitch with that awesome editor you’ve been stalking…er…I mean researching, your mind rewinds, replaying every single word you said and you think, “What if I’d said…? What if I’d told them…?” Would it have made a difference? Would I have won them over? And then you think, “Well crap on crackers! I wish I could rewind time and say (insert witty and awe-inspiring words here) instead.”

Awkwardly shy introvert that I am, I am an expert at the “what if” game. Been playing it for years and wishing I could have any number of “do-overs” to better present myself in whatever situation I’d just muddled through. And I’ve decided that’s most likely why I’m so fond of the time travel romance genre—both reading it as well as writing it.

I love when the heroine from the future discovers that the past isn’t as romantically rustic as she believed. Instead, it’s uncomfortable, inconvenient, and vastly smellier than she ever imagined. Or the hero from the past finds the future confusingly loud, complicated and frightening. But then they find each other and learn that love is timeless and having that one special person capable of winning your trust and cherishing your heart is all that really matters—no matter the century.

My Highland Hearts series is about the Sinclair women. Granny and her four granddaughters. Time-runners. The females of the Sinclair bloodline are able to skate back and forth across time at will and also control a specific set of powers such as healing, premonitions, and the talent of looking through a person’s thoughts and memories like flipping through the pages of a magazine. And since Granny’s getting up in years, she’s determined to see each granddaughter happily married to the perfect Highlander—the Highlander that Granny has seen through visions that her granddaughters are destined to love. 

The only kicker is that these perfect Highlanders happen to reside in the thirteenth century. That’s the century in which the Sinclair women were born before resettling to modern day Kentucky to survive. No modern man could ever meet Granny’s standards and besides, fate has matched her granddaughters with Highlanders from the past.

The Magic of Time Travel

I’m one of those lucky (truly, no sarcasm here) kids whose parents moved every couple of years. I attended 5 elementary schools, 2 junior high/middle schools, 1 high school, and 2 universities. I remember Michigan, Florida, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Texas, and California. If I had the awesome opportunity to live in another time or place, I’d choose the TIME option.

My reasons are simple:
1.  I’m enamored of all things pertaining to history of the American West,
2.  …because I write Sweet Victorian Romance set in the American West…
3.  …which means I’m constantly studying, researching, learning all about it.
4.  Wouldn’t it be cool to LIVE the Old West, rather than simply read about it?

 

Reading fiction set in my favorite historical time period in history is the best kind of time machine. I don’t need to leave my climate-controlled home, give up fresh produce in the middle of winter or an Internet connection…and I can escape at will into my favorite era and location. To me, reading fiction is a captivating distraction from anything or everything; when stressed I “hide in fiction”. I fall in, the world disappears, and my mind and soul is fully occupied in another place and another time. Best. Therapy. Ever.

When writing my soon-to-be-released novella, Courting Miss Cartwright (included in Cowboys & Calico, a 5-author novella collection coming 7-30-16 to Amazon), I spent weeks immersed in 1879 Colorado. I enjoyed researching the status of gold and silver mining in Colorado, including the big strike in Leadville, and the impact upon my characters and nearby fictitious town of Mountain Home, Colorado. Given the summer of 1879 is indelibly branded upon my brain this July, I’d set the dial on my time machine for then and there…as long as a return trip to here and now is guaranteed.
