Wattpad - Is It For You?

by Madelle Morgan

I'm posting Caught on Camera in serial form on Wattpad. My New Adult romantic comedy is in the "final draft before copy editing" stage. Every couple of weeks or so until it's published later this fall, I'll post another scene.

I hope to gain feedback and followers who are excited about the story. Hopefully they'll tell their friends!

Are you on Wattpad?

Wattpad is a social medial platform that enables anyone to read writer-posted work for free. Many of the writers on the site are pre-published. That is, they use Wattpad as a developmental program for works-in-progress. Some likely have no intention of formally publishing their fan fiction, poetry, and other creative work. For them, Wattpad is simply a place to share with a wide audience, and receive feedback with a view to improving their writing.

Why Should Readers Join Wattpad?

Readers actually don't need to be members of Wattpad in order to read the posted "parts". Unfortunately for readers, authors cannot keep the entire book available for free on Wattpad after it's for sale on the various retail platforms. Readers have a limited time or no opportunity to read the story's ending. So why sign up as a member, you may ask?

Wattpad members may:

  • follow an author, and thereby be notified when new scenes or "parts" are posted;
  • comment, helping to shape a story;
  • vote on books to support a favorite author and make her books more visible;
  • interact with authors; and last but not least,
  • discover books and new authors.

Why Should an Indie Author Join Yet Another Social Media Platform?

In this fiercely competitive market, self-published authors join Wattpad to attract fans. Increasingly, published authors are posting several chapters; i.e., they post more content than "look inside" type samples or first chapters available on retail sites. Readers have the opportunity to try many authors without spending a dime. Authors hope the free reads hook readers, and that they'll eventually buy the books on retail sites to find out what happens.

From wsj.com, "Wattpad has 40 million monthly users - almost 90% of whom are on mobile devices."

My newbie impression (I just joined Wattpad in August) is that promo on an author's other social media platforms such as Facebook, Goodreads, Twitter, etc. drives traffic to an author's books on the Wattpad platform. If a work has few views or votes, it's difficult for a Wattpad member to discover. The more member votes and views, the higher the book's ranking and the greater the discoverability.

More About Marketing on Wattpad

I decided to join and post scenes from my upcoming novel thanks to romance author Linda Poitevin. I've been following her informative series of articles, blog posts and podcasts - The Great Wattpad Marketing Experiment. Scroll down on the page at this link to Linda's website to the Wattpad heading to read about Linda's experience and lessons learned.

Read parts of Linda's Ever After romance series on Wattpad, and note that she has had 4.1 million views of Gwynneth Ever After, which is awesome!

Compare that to fewer than 20 views of three parts of Caught on Camera on Wattpad. Well, we indie authors have to start somewhere! Check it out here. I'd love your comments and feedback.

Hope you enjoyed the summer!

Overheard on . . . Romancing the Genres

"Eeeeeeeeee."

Okay, so in July Romancing the Genres will be spotlighting some great Romantic Suspense authors. This is a genre that makes me quiver simply thinking of it. The closest I've gotten to writing in this genre were the first few lines of my Free Read from the Genre-istas in May:

An animal-like scream pierced the air and Julia dove for cover. A bloody hand descended, edging over the desk where she trembled in fear. It was gnarled with age and lord knew what else. Feet kicking out in front of her, Julie scrabbled back into the corner, as far as she could get from the zombie looking appendage. It was no use. The fingers caught the hem of her apron and began to pull.

“Cut. That’s it for today.”

My main character, an actress, goes on to live a very normal, contemporary life (to read more check out the full, two part story, at http://freereadsfromthegenre-istas.blogspot.com/2014/05/Birthday-Promises.html)

So, suffice to say I am not a writer of suspense any more than I am a writer of code. Both scare the bejeezus out of me. Yesterday I was hanging out with another mom at a competition both of our daughters are in this weekend, and asked her what she was reading. I wish I'd gotten the author and name for all of you potential suspense readers. But suffice to say the title had the word 'Blood' in it.

I asked if she liked suspense and she said, she loved it... the darker the better. But even the idea of reading it gives me nightmares. I sincerely respect this genre, though. Just like reading sweet romance gives us a chance to express our hopes and dreams, reading romantic suspense puts these feelings into the very real context of extreme despair and redemption.

So come back in July to read more about our guest authors. I'll be checking in with each of them to find out how dark their stories are and discovering the page numbers to skip in order to keep from being awake all night dreaming of bloody, gnarled hands on dark handsome strangers.

New Year, New Look, New Readers?

by Judith Ashley

February 1 is the second Blog-O-Versary of our sister site, Free Reads From The Genre-istas. Our readership has grown and as I write this, we are less than four hundred page views from reaching 10K.
If you aren’t aware of Free Reads, let me tell you a little about it. First founded as a way for some of the Genre-istas to explore new-to-them genres using Flash Fiction, it soon grew from Flash Fiction to short short stories of 3 – 5K words or more. Several of the Genre-istas used their Free Reads as a starting point to expand the story into longer short stories.
Another use of the Free Reads stories is to expand and publish them. Both Paty Jager and Mae Pen have done that. On February 14, 2014 an anthology Love and Magick - Mystical Stories of Romance from Judith Ashley, Diana McCollum and Sarah Raplee will be released. The anthology contains original short stories as well as ramped up versions that first appeared on Free Reads.
But I digress.
While Free Reads has been a place for the Genre-istas to showcase their work and to launch early versions of later-published short stories, it has also been a lot of work. When Sarah and I realized we were publishing in 2014, we also realized that something had to give. We did not want to shut down Free Reads so we revamped it.

Check out Free Reads and see the New Look.
A new feature is the “Side Bar” on the right. The side bar lists the Genre-ista or Friend who is ‘responsible’ for that month, the date their story will be published and who else is coming to visit.
Another addition is the "Headline" where you can see not only the writers for the month but also the title of their short story and any other news such as the title of a new release, an award/contest they’ve won, etc.
These changes mean Free Reads is more diverse than ever and writers have another platform where they can be seen and read. Plan on joining our audience of readers from around the world: Russia, Germany, Poland, India, China to name a few!

Branding? Really?

Branding. Most people hear this word and immediately think of cows and hot metal iron. Unless you're in the marketing field. It used to be an author wrote the story, turned it over to an editor who wanted corrections and sent it back, the author corrected those issues and it was sent to the printer. The author then went on to the next story. Nowadays, not even close.

As authors we have to be aware of everything that goes on behind the scenes. And of course in order to sell you have to market yourself to your audience. I've learned this last year that branding for an author can be difficult and time consuming, but you don't have to go at it all at once. Here are just a few tips to help you understand what branding is and how it can be done.

1.) Find something that hits close to your heart. For me it's the Steampunk world, which includes the clothing. Now, since I'm just a beginner in the sewing world, I don't have much. What I do have I've worn to the conventions and to book signings. One of my best noticed pieces are my tiny hats. Everyone always comments on them. My best idea for my branding is to wear one of those mini hats to the events I want to be recognized at. Now that I own a corset you'll see me in it a lot as well.

2.) Get your name out there. Put together a website, blog and produce. Though I had been writing for a long time it wasn't until 2011 that I started to blog with this lovely group. Slowly my name started making the rounds. Then in 2012 I started to write free reads for our sister blog. My name and my work started to get noticed. I've now gotten complete strangers endorsing my fiction and short stories in LinkedIn.

4.) Get involved, either in a writing chapter or a small bookstore or book club. Once people recognize your efforts your name will get passed around. Attend conventions, both writing and within your genre.

As a reader what are your thoughts to give an author you've read? What do you think about when the word, "Branding" is brought up?

Opal's Twelve Days of Christmas

Hello, everyone!  So here we are in December, with the season of love and generosity all around us.  Gifts are a wonderful part of this time of year and I have a gift for you!

My publisher, St. Martin’s Press, is offering a free advanced copy of my new serial novel His to Command, #1 The Chase! This serial novel features a compelling story that is revealed in multiple weekly installments, beginning January 8th, 2013!

It would be lovely if you would let people know what you think of the story by putting up a short, honest review on Amazon or one of the other on-line retailers.  Doing so would be very helpful to me, because new readers like to see reviews before they try a new author’s work and I am really hoping to build my readership with this new project.

If you would like to receive the ARC, please go here to register by December 15th.

Now for something fun!  My twelfth book comes out in February (the serial novel is actually thirteen, but it jumped ahead!), so I thought I’d write a new version of the Twelve Days of Christmas.  Enjoy, and happy holidays!

Happy Leap Day!

Since this is Leap Day 2012, I decided to share a scene from my work-in-progress, a Paranormal Romantic Suspense with the working title Blindsight. Be forewarned, the passage is a lot longer than our usual posts. In this scene the hero and heroine each must overcome their fears to take leaps of faith in order to escape with their lives from a drug lord’s wilderness compound. They are strangers to one another. My heroine, Meli, is blind but far from helpless. Freddy is her Guide Dog as well as her only family. My hero, Hector, has never known a blind person but owes Meli his life

Cliff Scene
Meli held tightly to Freddy’s collar and wished she knew exactly what Hector was doing. Would he anchor the rope to a tree? Or to the electric fence Killingsworth had told her about at her orientation? How would Hector circumvent Mendoza’s sophisticated alarm system?
She heard him grunt and then small rocks ricocheted down the cliff like warning shots from a pellet gun. Her heart hiccupped. Please, God, don’t let him fall.
A barely-audible sing-song whisper came from Hector. The soft, sibilant rhythm resonated in her memory, and she found herself mouthing the words of a prayer. Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with you…
She drew in a startled breath. Hector was afraid of heights.
The next thirty seconds or so were punctuated by furtive noises she couldn’t readily identify. Next, she heard dirt and pebbles skitter down the cliff. She held her breath, listening.
After a moment of silence Hector gave a low whistle. Exhaling, she let go of Freddy’s collar and crawled toward the sound. A moment later, a strong hand grabbed her elbow. “Whoa,” Hector said in an urgent whisper. “There’s a cliff, remember?”
She gave a stiff nod, holding her temper. She wasn’t an idiot. By the sound of things, she could tell it was a couple of yards to the drop off. She was in no danger. He released her arm.
Her thoughts turned to her coming descent. She’d have to release the rope and drop the last few feet into the water. The slap, slap of ripples lapping the bank twenty-five feet below caught her breath in her throat. Freddy didn’t have hands to release the rope.
She grabbed a fistful of Hector’s shirt. “How do we get Freddy down?”
He cleared his throat. “You go down first, he’s second, I’m last.” He pried her fingers loose from the cloth.
“But how will you get him down?” she said, thinking he’d misunderstood the question.
“I’ll explain later.”
She stiffened. Was he treating her like a kid again? Or couldn’t he figure out how to get Freddy down the cliff? She struggled to breathe. If she descended first, he could force her to leave Freddy behind.
No way could she let that happen. “Freddy goes down first.”
A warm wet tongue licked the back of her hand.
“Have it your way,” Hector said, his voice flat. He grunted and claws scrabbled the ground. Freddy gave a surprised yip and then a small landslide of dirt and pebbles pinged down the cliff face.
A large splash in the river below quivered her heart. She surged toward the edge of the cliff. “Freddy!”
A strong arm clamped around her shoulders and a big hand covered her mouth. “He’s fine,” Hector said into her ear. “Swims like a champ.”
She sank her teeth into his palm. Swearing under his breath, he jerked his hand away.
“You arrogant ass,” she hissed, shaking with fury. “You could have given him a heart attack. Freddy’s old. You’re lucky I don’t push you in after him!”
“If you’d gone down without arguing, you could have helped him,” Hector said.
She fisted her hands and fought to keep her voice low. “I’m not an idiot and I’m not your little slave. I know a helluva lot more about Freddy than you ever will. You should have taken thirty seconds to explain the situation so we could work together.”
After a moment of silence, Hector said. “We can argue later. Let’s move.”
Meli sucked in a deep breath and then blew it out. He was right. She pressed her lips together and nodded.
She let Hector tie the rope around her waist because doing it herself meant he’d want to redo the knots. Pulling off her dark glasses, she stuffed them into her bra so she wouldn’t lose them.
When they were ready, she backed on her hands and knees to the cliff’s edge, then dropped do her belly.
“I’ll keep the rope taut,” he said. “Find a toehold and lean outward so you can walk down the rock face as I feed you the line.”
Meli bit back a sharp retort. She was a climber from way back. She could do this in her sleep—not that Hector would believe her.
He wrapped the fingers of her right hand around a short end of rope.  “When you’re down as far as you can go, I’ll whistle. Drop your legs and pull hard on this to release the knot. Can you swim?”
She jerked her chin up and down.
“Go downstream. I don’t want to land on you. There’s a fallen log jutting out from the bank about a hundred yards down. The current’ll carry you there.”
She set her jaw, slid back and let her legs drop over the edge.
“Fred’s made it up onto the log,” Hector said softly.
She couldn’t move for a moment while her heart and stomach unknotted. She hadn’t lost Freddy.
Forcing herself to take her time, she descended the cliff face.
When a low whistle sounded above her, she knew she’d reached the end of her rope. She dropped her legs, twisting so she wouldn’t bang face-first into the rock wall. Her shoulder and hip banged against stone with bruising force. Wincing, she filled her lungs as she swung outward and then she released the knot.
The water was so cold it made her skin burn. Although she’d bent her knees to absorb the shock, the impact when she struck bottom forced a burst of air from her lungs. Fighting the urge to inhale, she pushed off the rocky riverbed and shot to the surface.
Sucking in a welcome breath, she fought to keep her head above water while the force of the current spun her in circles like a leaf in a storm drain. After a few dizzying seconds, her upper body slammed into a large obstacle that didn’t give. Her hands scrabbled across a smooth, musty-smelling surface she identified as a wet, weathered log. She grabbed onto a short woody stub to keep the current from pulling her underneath to a watery grave.
Freddy barked once from the direction of the near bank. Hope briefly chased away the cold. Touching bottom, she found purchase on the rocky riverbed. Then she slogged sideways through the current toward her guide. In shin-deep water, she banged into a knee-high rock ledge. She rubbed the bruised spot on her leg with rapidly-freezing fingers and let out a whispered string of curses. Freddy’s tags tinkled and then a warm tongue licked her cheek.
Meli threw her arms around her guide’s soggy neck.  “I’m so sorry, baby. Are you okay?”
He whined.
Worry propelled her out of the icy water onto the warm stone shelf. She sat up and shucked her water-logged backpack. Freddy stood patiently and they both shivered while she checked him over for injuries. Other than being cold and wet, he seemed unscathed. Thank God it was sunny so they’d eventually dry out.
She heard a faint hailstorm of pebbles splash into the water upstream. “It would serve him right if he fell, wouldn’t it, Freddy?”
Her guide’s worried whine reminded her that Hector was afraid of heights. This escape route had to be his worst nightmare. He might have a big ego, but he was courageous and he kept his word. He’d promised to get Freddy down the cliff, and he had. He’d promised to find Freddy, and he had. They owed him.
Like it or not, the three of them were in this together. They were a team.
A man-sized splash told her Hector had dropped into the river. She smiled. Points for not screaming like a little girl, Hector Protector.

Top Five Industry Changes All Writers Should Know...and Embrace!

INDIE BOOK COLLECTIVE
1. EBooks. In December 2010, Amazon reported that eBooks on their site outsold all other forms of books. 85% of the electronic book market is dominated by Amazon.com. While print and audio formats will never die out, the sooner authors embrace this new, viable format of eBooks as the forward trend, the better their careers will be for it.

2. The Power of Free. Whether it’s the buy one book in a year and get ten free option of book clubs or your weekly visit to the library, then and now, free reads can earn future dollars and new fans. Harnessing the power of creating a free reads, and giving free reads away in a strategic way, will expose authors to tons of new readers they can earn into fandom.

3. Book Bloggers. The new grocery store line is online. Where readers used to look to magazines for book reviews, the blogosphere is evolving into a reader-centric place filled with bloggers who love to read and love to talk books. Readers are finding their additions to their To Be Read pile through blog hops, guest blogging and contests thrown by members of this tight community. Become a good neighbor by visiting a blog a day and commenting in a positive way.

4. Even traditional is going indie. Bob Mayer, JA Konrath. The list goes on. Having a New York contract doesn’t mean authors aren’t going indie. Because of massive innovations and a plethora of author friendly self-publishing platforms, being indie is no longer a dirty word. Authors of all sorts of backgrounds are dipping a toe in the indie waters and creating extras through self-publishing for fans during the down time between traditional releases.

5. Social Media. Twitter, Facebook, blogging or any other social media platform will not sell books. It will, however, forge relationships that authors can nurture into a tribe of readers who then create the word of mouth buzz that does sell books. Word of mouth buzz comes in many forms now thanks to tweets, status updates, blog posts and more. Reviews, hitting the ‘like’ button on an Amazon page and more all create popularity and stem from social media relationships. If authors keep this platform fan-centric, their readers will repay them in kind, and do so spontaneously. Because readers love to help authors that they love!

Co-founded by Carolyn McCray, Amber Scott and Rachel Thompson, the Indie Book Collective is made up of authors who love to help fellow authors succeed. Membership is as easy as following @IndieBookIBC on Twitter or hitting the 'Like' button on Facebook. We have monthly webinar classes on Social media, Facebook start-up, getting Goodreads, Blogging basics and much more!
